Penn State OL coach likely heading to Auburn

Submitted by ypsituckyboy on

In a sad day for every DL in the B1G, it appears that PSU OL coach Herb Hand is leaving for Auburn (per Dan Wolken). Not a done deal yet, but Hand is apparently close friends with Malzahn. I am assuming that the fine people at Auburn haven't been able to locate any PSU OL game tape from the past few years.

This comes shortly after DC Bob Shoop departed for Tennessee.

Hard to read too much into a couple staff defections, as it happens everywhere, but some of the PSU staff may be seeing the writing on the wall in Happy Valley.

Sure, there were some unhappy about Shoop, but no worse than you guys with Durkin. Many of them see Hand going as a blessing. While they feel the same or even moreso with Hand, the rapid stages of grief over Shoop leaving, except for acceptance are best viewed at BWI the Rivals free board. They wanted to bring Paterno guys back for the DC or the now open position coach spot since they promoted Pry. They'd like to bring back home your safeties coach, but for many of them anyone that played or coached under Paterno would be fine. Except Sandusky. Though that is a Free Jerry outpost. Not many, but some still use quotes around the word victims and think ole Jer had boundry issues and got railroaded by bad eggs who wanted to make a quick buck. Bu they have threads about the NCAA having it in for Paterno because of a few second clip of a TV in the background having a PSU game on. And they are happy the halo was returned to the mural that includes Paterno.

look no further than the OL. As we know, it's a position group with a high miss rate.  In 2012,13 and14, PSU got a total of 8 OL commits. Only one of whom was a 4* to Rivals. They should be looking at another tough season, regardless of the coaching. By comparison, we took 12 OL in those classes, 9 of whom were 4* or 5*.

I believe Hand was PSU's recruiter in this area. Remember seeing pictures of him at Cass Tech.

Poor Auburn.

As for PSU I am sticking to my call a few months ago that the tanner version of Brady Hoke will be out of a job within a year.  If Narduzzi smacks tanner Hoke next Sept, Sad Valley is going to be up in arms.

(Also I assume Funk is available for hire James - hurry and snag him!)

PennLive, as you might expect, is covering this with much interest - LINK

Auburn lost its offensive line coach, J.B. Grimes, to Cincinnati on Monday morning. Hand, who has been with Penn State coach James Franklin for five seasons, previously coached with Tigers' head coach Guz Malzahn when the two were co-offensive coordinators at Tulsa in 2007 and 2008.

That's the reason the position is open at Auburn, so everyone is aware. The article also mentions that Hand's legacy may very well be some units which underperformed, although the author claims that it is largely due to circumstances beyond Hand's control, particularly this year.

should extend Franklin and hire Funk!

On another note, wonder how this impacts 4* PSU Commit OT Will Fries.  The M staff was pushing for him to visit.  We might not have spots left though...

Why does everyone seem to hate Penn State so much? Serious question, I'm only 17. The past few years they've sucked, and before that I wasn't old enough to really care about them, but I've just never noticed a reason to hate them. Can someone fill me in?

Had some TV gig after the regular season, maybe the B1G champ game or was it another conference (forgot), one that was on Fox.

I was shocked at that, but maybe he needs to polish his TV image...

...or maybe just go polish his head....(just kidding I'm losing hair too)
