Penn St Night Game?

Submitted by ScottyFromTN on August 9th, 2022 at 9:12 PM

Looking at my annual trip this year and would like to go to the Penn St. game.

Considering I am making the trip from TN, what are the chances that the PSU game will be a night game? Seems like FOX will want MSU to be a Big Nude Saturday. Or did we burn our night game on **checks notes** -- Hawaii?

Thx

There will be 2 night games again this year.  Most likely be penn state but could also be nebraska. I believe the no night games in november rule is gone now so will see

I'm pretty sure that the B10 rule is that night games must be in Daylight Saving Time.  Last year's Indiana game was one day before the end of Daylight Saving Time; no B10 games after DST were at night.  This year's Nebraska game is 6 days after the end of Daylight Saving Time, so it can't be a night game.

Penn State is the maize out but I believe MSU is the more likely night game. Penn State-Ohio State is the same week, but Penn State seems to believe that game will *not* be at night (see James Franklin's comments at media days on why Minnesota is their white out game). If Penn State-Ohio State does get Fox's noon slot, then our game against MSU is almost certainly ABC's night game.

Fox doesn't get the first choice every week -- they choose a week they get first pick, then ESPN chooses a week they get first pick, and back and forth. Fox always chooses rivalry week with their first pick and then claims The Game. ESPN chose Week 1 this year (to get OSU-ND), but I don't think it's public knowledge what other weeks each side chose.

So to answer OP's question, while it won't be determined and/or publicly announced until a couple weeks prior, the signs point to Penn State being a day game.

FWIW, I hope I'm wrong and Penn State is the night game. I'd much prefer our maize out to be under the lights.

I believe it's our maize out game so I'd guess chances are high it's at night.

Edit*  As a matter of fact I remember avoiding this game for my 3 pack of tickets because of the maize out/nighttime possibility.  The gf and I have tickets for a 1 pm game in Pittsburgh the next day to see the GOAT play in (probably) his last season.

OSU / Penn State is the same day as UM / MSU, so I wouldn't count on us getting the noon game that weekend. Selfishly I am hoping for as late as possible for the MSU game due to my kid's cheerfest.

Don't know if it'll be at night, probably because it's the maize out. But they're honoring the '97 national championship at the game.

I think it is too early to tell.  From my understanding, Fox gets first dibs for Big Nude and ESPN/ABC gets the next game.  If this is the case, I think it depends on how good Michigan State and Wisconsin are and the respective rankings between M/PSU and MSU/Wisky.  Fox is going to take one of those two games, so we will be Big Nude or the ESPN night game.

FOX already took PSU/OSU for the Big Noon spot on 10/29 which means our MSU game will either be at 3:30 or at night. I would think that would increase the chance that our Penn State game is at noon but nothing has been announced yet.

That's the rumor and that's why PSU has their whiteout against Minnesota the week before now. But FOX just has first choice that day (which can be 12 days before the game), they didn't have to take a specific game yet and that's why nothing's been announced like you said. So if our game with MSU ends up as the better matchup (and I think it will be), it could still be chosen for Noon. Now, I don't know the potential politics of PSU moving their whiteout only to have FOX pick another game for Noon, but I think those are how the TV rules work.

As far as our PSU game, MSU-Wisconsin was already announced as a 3:30 or 4 PM kick. So the signs point to a Noon kickoff for us given the lack of other good game options that day for Big Noon. But I don't know why they'd announce a Maize Out and honoring the 1997 team so far in advance if the PSU game is at Noon. So my guess is that they put a Big 12 game at Noon and we end up at night.

My guess is...........?  that all your guesses are just guesses and nobody has any damn clue what time the games will be, other than the ones announced so far, which aren't guesses.  Stay tuned for more guesses.

We are crazy if we do not make it a night game.  Night game maize-outs are a big competitive advantage for us.

The only games we have been able to win at Penn State recently have been when they did not make them night games in Happy Valley.  There is a lesson for us there.

Play every card you have, man.
