Pelini to YSU

Surprised he did not wait to inquire about the Pitt job. Guess he likes the idea of coaching at home.

I wonder if:
- No one wants him
- He is waiting for the right opening
There should be some real buzz around him, but there only appears talk when his agent is active.
December 16th, 2014 at 5:00 PM ^
I think he is still holding out for the Penn State job.
December 16th, 2014 at 2:46 PM ^
I think he's waiting for Urban to have more "health issues."

"Bo pelini and his cat" are heading to YSU. That was great.
December 16th, 2014 at 2:08 PM ^
Huge step up for him if true.

YSU alum here. Awesome news! I'm hoping he carries a baby penguin out for the spring game next year.
December 16th, 2014 at 2:29 PM ^
I'm going to guess his agent did inquire about the Pitt job. Think Pitt could be of interest to Narduzzi? Good recruiting state in an area he's familiar with, without having to directly compete on the field with the better Big Ten schools. A P5 job where coaches have shown some ability to be successful. Certainly a better option than UConn ever was.
Edit: It's almost hard to imagine that he wouldn't have at least inquired. If he is taking youngstown job out of at least partly a desire to be coaching back home, the Pitt job accomplishes almost the same thing.

My opinion of Football Scoop:
December 16th, 2014 at 4:07 PM ^
They still appeared to be wrong about Beilema and Kiffin. They've been known to have a lot of good info, but I still think they're willing to chuck anything at a wall they hear and thus are relatively unreliable
December 16th, 2014 at 2:11 PM ^
Such an odd case, this is. He wasn't doing badly at Nebraska. There had to be other issues there.

December 16th, 2014 at 2:33 PM ^
In 2011, didn't Pelini basically tell anyone and everyone associated with Nebraska football - the fans, administration, media, etc. - to go F themselves, and get recorded doing so? Maybe that's not the direct cause for his firing now, but you can't imagine such a coach having a strong reputation or getting a good recommendation from others at his last job.
December 16th, 2014 at 2:28 PM ^
Frank Solich had a 75% winning percentage in five years when he got canned. Pelini was 71% in six. The Mendoza line is 80% in Lincoln.
December 16th, 2014 at 2:28 PM ^
He just never won a big game, and the latest to Wisconsin was the straw I guess. But Nebraska fans complaining about 8 - 4, 9-4 seasons remind me of Michigan fans (myself included) in the early 00's.
And now Nebraska has a 5 - 7 coach. Be careful what you wish for.

December 16th, 2014 at 3:02 PM ^
It's so pathetic that I would do a lot of stupid things to average 9-4 right now. How far the mighty have fallen.
December 16th, 2014 at 4:05 PM ^
but had a .333 win percentage against Top 25 teams.
We were at .300 and PSU was at .333 during the same period of time.
December 16th, 2014 at 9:31 PM ^
Because some weak ND teams were ranked when we played them? '09 ND was #18 in the poll when we played them but I think we know better, in retrospect, than to call that a top-25 win.
In the Pelini era, against teams that finished in the top-25 (Massey):
- Nebraska 9-19
- Penn State 5-15
- Wisconsin 6-19
- Michigan 2-21
The only Massey top-25 teams Michigan has beaten since 2008 were 2012 Northwestern (#21) and 2010 Notre Dame (#23). The other three ND teams had all dropped out by the end of the year.
It's not that easy to win more than 1/3 of your games against true top-25 opposition--look at Wisconsin, who won three B1G championships during that stretch. Alabama does better. Oregon, OSU. But those aren't Nebraska's peers now, are they?
December 16th, 2014 at 7:05 PM ^
Here's what happened: Nebraska won the Stuck In 1997 Time Warp Trophy over us.
December 16th, 2014 at 2:11 PM ^
That's great for Pelini - Youngstown
That's great for Herman - Houston
That's great for all of the coaches that have gotten a new HC position and for the coaches that have managed to get a raise from the Michigan Coaching search. Now even Gruden has an extension apparently.
I just have a few questions? Are we still confident and/or hopeful with Harbaught to Michigan? Is this more hopeful today? Is this less Hopeful today?
After reading Brian's rundown on the front page I need to know is the everybody that is going to be wrong the NFL guys?
Nuf Said.
Harbaugh to Michigan?

...and in what will surely be a money-saver for Pelini:
Bo Pelini can keep some of his clothes. Nebraska red (Pantone 186) is the same as Youngstown State red (Pantone 185/186)

WTF is Pelini and the rest of college football thinking. He may not be in the Saban, Harbaugh, Myers league, but going from 9 - 10 wins at Nebraska to YSU!?!? In that case where does Brady Hoke end up??? Even his cat is confused....
December 16th, 2014 at 2:27 PM ^
No doubt, just what I was thinking. There had to be a better place to land than Youngstown State. The guy is a really good coach. But what do I know? I work in an office.
December 16th, 2014 at 2:31 PM ^
All former Husker coaches go to Ohio to restart their careers. YSU was just the only thing available there this year.
December 16th, 2014 at 6:45 PM ^
Seriously, he should fire his agent.
December 16th, 2014 at 2:18 PM ^
Lots of talent in and around the Cleveland metro area. Not like Kent St. or Akron is taking advantage...
December 16th, 2014 at 2:22 PM ^
(shakes head)
December 16th, 2014 at 2:23 PM ^
I wonder if he some sort of clause that requires them to pay out for firing him, unless he is not rehired by an FBS school or paid a certain amount.
December 16th, 2014 at 2:36 PM ^
I found these details:
If Pelini were fired without cause, he'd receive a lump sum equal to $41,700 a month for the number of months remaining on the contract.
But the contract adds: "Within a reasonably brief period following termination, Coach shall use his or her best efforts to seek and secure substantially comparable employment including the customary and reasonable terms and conditions of compensation at the new employment, without structuring or timing compensation to avoid mitigation."
If he were to find a job paying more than $500,000 a year, the university would owe him nothing.
If Pelini were to get a job that paid less than $500,000, he would receive some but not all of his damages. For example, if his next employer were to pay him $120,000 a year, that would equate to $10,000 a month. The university would then reduce his $41,700-a-month basis by $10,000, for a new basis of $31,700.

A purely dollars move makes the most sense. Where'd you get the contract info?
December 16th, 2014 at 4:35 PM ^
But they pored through the actual contract:
