DB is machiavellian, he is just doing this so that RR could get rid of the staff without killing his friendship with them. Scott loefler will be coming back to be Denards qb coach to give him a little more accuracy and touch on the ball.Plus it will appease the blue hairs for the lloyd lineage. Ron English will return to be d coordinator. Midweek DB will have a presser saying that the coaching committee detrmined RR to be the best choice, and reinstate him as coach. Why else would he say he is sitting out a year when there are available seats on the ol' carousel........... this has to be the case, i mean who would seriously start a coaching search a few weeks before signing day, and not contact anyone that makes sense to be the coach. ( sarcasm strongly intended)
January 7th, 2011 at 6:43 PM ^
Is anyone else missing RR more and more as each hour passes?
January 7th, 2011 at 6:50 PM ^
Had he fired Greg Robinson after Illinois, he'd still be here. He decided to go down with that sinking ship.
January 7th, 2011 at 6:59 PM ^
Restructure him to a 1 year deal, the only way he gets a second or more years is if he gets a B1G championship next year. He would bring in a whole new defensive staff, the recruits he had would stay or even recommit, and Denard would probably win the Heisman(but would be second team B1G).
January 7th, 2011 at 8:19 PM ^
That would completely fuck next year's recruiting class if you write up a contract that says 'win now or you're gone'. Nobody would want to come into that situation.
RR's gone. It may not have all worked out to be fair, but he's gone. It's time to move on.
January 7th, 2011 at 6:48 PM ^
Serious question
January 7th, 2011 at 7:04 PM ^
I was trying in non-controversial way to ask if the coach was deeply religious and if a secular school like U of M would be a turn off. I know people are sensitive about religion and I did not want to offend. I made a mistake.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:52 PM ^
I am not an atheist, but I took no offense. I'm just teasing you. The way you asked the question sort of left you open to that.
January 7th, 2011 at 6:49 PM ^
I love the guy as a head coach, but how is he any different from a resume perspective than the guy we just fired, aside from specializing on a different side of the ball and looking like he's on a perpetual coke binge? To me he is basically Rodriguez with infinitely less polish and sophistication. I don't see that as a bad thing, but I just don't see Brandon going in that direction.
January 7th, 2011 at 6:53 PM ^
One of advantages Patterson has over RR when he came in was that his system would mesh with what we've already installed. RR was completely unrigid in bending his offence to what he had available. A spread-happy offence and Patterson's 4-2-5 would be a much easier transition for this team than it was from Carr to Rodriguez.
January 7th, 2011 at 6:56 PM ^
I love the move from a football standpoint, especially with respect to the next couple of seasons. At the same time, Rodriguez's system meshes with the system we have now too. I just don't see Brandon firing Rodriguez after three years so he can go out and hire Tourette's Rodriguez.
January 7th, 2011 at 6:49 PM ^
i hope Jim received a decent enough education at Michigan (and wasn't steered into Sports Management) that he knows that his GM is a fucking idiot and before he introduced him said, "without further TO DO" instead of the proper "adieu." And the music? Are you kidding me? If he was going to go to the NFL anyway, then I'm glad he's there. He was a great player at Michigan and give his blood and sweat for the maize and blue. He deserves to pursue his dreams. I just think his GM might just be an arrogant jackass that he is probably going to run into some trouble with. Good luck, Jim!
January 7th, 2011 at 7:10 PM ^
lol How about "ado"? Tres bien.
January 7th, 2011 at 7:13 PM ^
I'm not certain, but I'm pretty sure it is "ado" not "adieu."
January 7th, 2011 at 7:13 PM ^
beat to the punch. Sorry.
January 7th, 2011 at 7:20 PM ^
Adieu means good-bye so, you know, that would be awkward.
January 7th, 2011 at 6:52 PM ^
Why do I like Gary Patterson because he looks like Chris Farley, but I don't like Brady Hoke because he looks like Mike Golic or Jeff Garlin? I think it means if Brady Hoke had Patterson's record, I'd like Jeff Garlin.

with some "positives" on Les Miles, because lets face it, he is our new coach by the time Monday comes. No Patterson, no Gruden, no Harbaugh. Its Les and we can either bitch the whole time he's here or we can support him and hope his tactics of past were either just to compete with the other slimy coaches in the SEC.
And I will start with this positive. He can recruit, and he will be able to utilize Denard. I don't think oversigning this year will be of any threat.
January 7th, 2011 at 6:56 PM ^
LSU is in on Jernigan. Maybe he could pull him to AA.
January 7th, 2011 at 8:01 PM ^
this.
Les isn't someone most people want, but he's a very real possibility. Throw him under the bus (if/when he's hired) and you throw the current football program under the bus along with him. I hope people support him if he is hired.
As for positivies; he's engineered some very good defenses.
January 7th, 2011 at 6:56 PM ^
three years ago. Now that JH is gone, I'll gladly accept him again - grayshirts, grass breath, mad hat and all.
January 7th, 2011 at 8:50 PM ^
I know that the last 3 years have seen Les Miles become a bit of a villain due to his slimey tactics, but I'll reiterate, this is unlikely to continue while at UM since we tend to keep a closer eye on that sort of thing and it simply wouldn't fly. I also don;t understand his age being an issue. So he'll be 60 in 3 years. BFD. He'd still be 60 in 3 years if he were hired 3 years ago. Do those three years of AGE really make that much of a difference? Give me a break.
I'm starting to snap people. If I start ranting uncontrollably, somebody embed the "Get A Hold Of Yourself!" video from "Airplane!" and slap me in the face, please.
January 7th, 2011 at 6:57 PM ^
Did Patterson build his program? No, Dennis Franchonie did. Patterson stepped into a perfect situation. Furthermore TCU has a clear advantage by not having to recruit against any other Texas schools in conference.
Did Hoke build his program? Yes, SDSU hadn’t made a bowl game since 98. They hadn’t won a bowl game since 69. Go look back at the historical records of SDSU. It is a wasteland of college football. If you give Hoke ten years at SDSU he’ll be doing the same things Patterson is doing now.
Furthermore Patterson has no experience whatsoever recruiting the Midwest. He has no ties at all to Michigan High Schools, or Ohio, or Indiana. He has never coached outside of Texas for the last 10 years. Look at theTCU roster. How many out of State players do they have? About 10.
Hoke recruited for Michigan, and Ball State. He knows the area, has the personal connections, understands the culture. Furthermore Hoke used to recruit California under Carr. He was responsible for bringing in Tom Brady. He is not a joke as a recruiter; he’s just been at two really difficult places to recruit to.
Thirdly Patterson has no passion for Michigan football. He’ll have the same blank stare that RichRod had when asked about the OSU rivalry. Hoke needs no instructions of what our traditions are and why they are.
Look you may not like Hoke, fine. But to say somehow Patterson is a better fit for Michigan is laughable. Patterson is a defensive version of Rich Rodriguez all over again. Just because he beat Wisconsin once doesn’t mean he’ll have success in the big ten.
I’d be fine with Brady Hoke. They guy will be on everybody’s radar in 3-5 years. Get him now.
January 7th, 2011 at 7:01 PM ^
Gary Patterson has a winning record as a college head coach.
The end.
January 7th, 2011 at 7:16 PM ^
...Patterson's record is misleading. He has never had to prove it outside of his TCU bubble. Hoke has turned around 2 dreadful programs. Hoke is a much better candidate for the Michgian job compared to Patterson.
January 7th, 2011 at 7:23 PM ^
He turned around Ball State?
Bill Lynch's last 3 years at Ball State were 16-18. Hoke took that and the next 5 years were 22-37. Even with the 12-1 year, he had a losing record those 6 years.
Hardly a turnaround...
And I don't think 2 years at .500 is indicative of anything yet at SDSU. If he had a couple more decent years then fine, but nothing on Hoke's resume impresses me...
January 7th, 2011 at 7:21 PM ^
Great points. You could also have pointed out, a few months ago, Harbaugh had a losing I-A record.
But Brian started the anti-Hoke meme in December 2007 and it's taken on a life of it's own. There are a lot of Hoke supporters who can see what he's done, but we're definitely in the minority.
January 7th, 2011 at 7:34 PM ^
...I mean there are some great candidates out there. Dan Mullen would be a guy I'd love to see interview. But to make Hoke out to be the worst hire ever isn't true. I can understand why the fanbase is relunctant to accept him, but he is not that awful. And seriously when people go crazy over a guy like Patterson, I really scratch my head.
January 7th, 2011 at 7:25 PM ^
Here are just a few guys with better resumes than Brady Hoke who are current or recent college head coaches going from conference to conference:
Jimbo Fisher, Ralph Friedgen, Tom O'Brien, Tommy Bowden, Terry Bowden, Bobby Bowden, Jim Grobe, Frank Beamer, Randy Shannon, Butch Davis, Paul Johnson, David Cutcliffe, Randy Edsall, Doug Marrone, Greg Schiano, Barry Alvarez, Bret Bielema, Jim Tressel, Jon Cooper, Mark Dantonio, Kirk Ferentz, Joe Paterno, Rich Rodriguez, Lloyd Carr, Gary Moeller, Pat Fitzgerald, Joe Tiller, Glen Mason, Bo Pelini, Tom Osborne, Gary Pinkel, Bill Snyder, Gary Barnett, Mark Mangino, Bob Stoops, Mike Gundy, Mike Sherman, Dennis Franchione, Art Briles, Mike Leach, Tommy Tuberville, Mack Brown, George O'Leary, June Jones, Todd Graham, Frank Solich, Al Golden, Gary Patterson, Kyle Wittingham, Bronco Mendenhall, Chip Kelly, Mike Bellotti, Jim Harbaugh, Jeff Tedford, Mike Riley, Dennis Erickson, Mike Stoops, Rick Neuheisel, Mike Price, Steve Spurrier, Urban Meyer, Mark Richt, Gene Chizik, Bobby Petrino, Les Miles, Nick Saban, Dan Mullen, Chris Peterson, Pat Hill, Brian Kelly, Chris Ault...
That doesn't include young up and coming guys, NFL coaches, or any coordinators.
If we can't get any of those guys, then we should consider looking at Brady Hoke. Until then, the mention of his name will continue to give me douche chills.
January 7th, 2011 at 7:53 PM ^
Very nice list but obviously not exhaustive. Surely there are others before we would settle for DOOM.
January 7th, 2011 at 8:10 PM ^
Just a way to show where Hoke falls in the college football pecking order and illustrate again how stupid it is move someone up the list because of a tenuous connection with Michigan.
Here's another name: Dirk Koetter
26-10 in three seasons at BSU with two bowl wins, left behind a very strong program for Hawkins and later Peterson. 40-34 at ASU with two bowl wins. Struggled in year one going 4-7, then finished in the top half of the Pac 10 four of the next five seasons. Left behind a program that won 10 games in year one under Dennis Erickson. Spent the last four seasons as the offensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars in the NFL.
He won't even get a sniff of the Michigan job but he has an infinitely better resume than Brady Hoke. Anyone who can't see what a clusterfuck it would be to hire Hoke is completely brain dead.
January 7th, 2011 at 8:02 PM ^
But, as we have seen with RR, resume is not always the most important or telltale factor.
January 7th, 2011 at 8:11 PM ^
Impatience on the part of dumbass fans often impacts the perception of a head coach.
January 7th, 2011 at 7:15 PM ^
Let's not make every coach that has a couple of winning seasons at some MAC level college team the next coming of Bo.
January 7th, 2011 at 7:14 PM ^
Patterson has been around for 10 years as HC. Hoke? Rides on the coattails of the coach before him that did all the grunt work. Ball State? Slaughtered by BUFFALO!!! Then he skipped town. Patterson could and should get credit for building his program being there for 10 years.
Recruiting? Is Texas not a talent pool? For more local recruits, put yourself in an 18 year old's shoes. Hi I'm Brady Hoke, I don't have a winning record to tell you about, or any major bowl wins, and hell, you might not even know who I am. Hi, I am Gary Patterson and I have just won the Rose Bowl (second BCS bowl appearance, which will happen again with your help in the coming years, I also have been named AP Coach of the Year.
18 year old: Helllllllo Gary Patterson.
Patterson doesn't understand "Michigan Man traditions rabble rabble rabble?"
From Patterson's mouth :"Michigan has a great tradition and is a great university"
RR=GP? Wrong again.
Gary runs a 4-2-5. Giving MM a better chance to face one on ones and can also utilize Denard's talent in the spread he runs. Hoke? Denard is gone.
January 7th, 2011 at 7:29 PM ^
Hoke rides on the coattails of who? Look at the records of Ball State and SDSU before Hoke got there. Those programs were in shambles.
Again you might not like Hoke, but honestly if you compare him to Patterson he is a much, much better option for Michigan.
And nice quote you sited there. He could be talking about any school in America. "Pheonix Online University has a great tradition and is a great university." -Gary Patterson
You made my point for me with that little nugget. Thank you. Let's get a coach in here who knows how great Michigan is, not canned coach speak.
January 7th, 2011 at 7:32 PM ^
Ball State was better in Lynch's last 3 years than in the next 5 under Hoke. He "turned around" that program by having one good season and leaving behind a smoking crater for Stan Parrish to deal with.
Hoke had a not-terrible season with a talented group of players recruited by Chuck Long at SDSU.
None of these things should make him a candidate for what we think is one of the top 10 coaching positions in America.
January 7th, 2011 at 7:39 PM ^
...and have friends who played for SDSU. Chuck Long did not have a talented group.
I understand your relunctance. Believe me I do. I personally would be willing to give Hoke a shot, I like how much he likes Michigan. You would not. That's fine.
However my original point still stands. Patterson is not as strong of a candidate as Hoke is for Michigan. That is my point.
January 7th, 2011 at 7:48 PM ^
Who recruited the junior quarterback who just had such a great season as a third year starter? The two thousand yard receivers? The bulk of the defense and o-line? Yeah, that would be Chuck Long, no matter where you live.
If being a defensive line coach under Lloyd Carr makes you a stronger candidate than the guy who just won the Rose Bowl, then Michigan's football program has gotten completely lost up its own asshole.
Hopefully, Dave Brandon is smarter than all the morons who think this is a good idea.
January 7th, 2011 at 8:01 PM ^
Well going by your logic, we should interview Haywood. He turned around Miami (NTM). It isn't that I don't like Hoke, but when I heard DB opening the checkbook and going to surprise people with a great coach, Hoke is not registering me as deserving that wad of cash or the title of a great coach.
FYI- University of Pheonix doesn't have a football team, but I am sure Hoke would turn that around in five years and then get blown out in a shitty bowl by the fighting Kaplan's.
Your constant Hoke blowing convinces me you hate Denard and want to go backwards in a program instead of forward. Let's get a coach in here that can win with the players we have quick. Not someone who thinks Oregon is soft and the spread offense doesn't work.
January 7th, 2011 at 8:28 PM ^
Patterson has two BCS appearances at a mid major program and a BCS win over Wisconsin this year. He has produced some great teams on his own and led TCU to heights never before seen. Basically, he has accomplished what Hoke could one day accomplish, meaning that he has realized the potential we can see in Hoke.
January 7th, 2011 at 8:57 PM ^
He’ll have the same blank stare that RichRod had when asked about the OSU rivalry.
Why don't YOU explain to all of us here just what the fuck the OSU rivalry "means".
and how anyone except a drooling idiot would have such a difficult time grasping the concept.
Do you believe RR had no passion for Michigan football?
he’s just been at two really difficult places to recruit to.
You mean like a coach at a tiny private school in Texas surrounded by massive rivals?
Patterson is a defensive version of Rich Rodriguez all over again.
You're saying TCU had trouble scoring? Winning?
Laughable? Hoke doesn't compare at all.
January 7th, 2011 at 6:58 PM ^
The fact that after openly expressing intrest(ish) doesn't get a call and the sleezy (Miles) and incompetent (Hoke) do is a depressing commentary on the inbread obsession of Michigan Mandom in the athletic department.
January 7th, 2011 at 6:59 PM ^
What about Mike Gundy? I never hear his name brought up for any job. He's has a good overall record (47-29), is young (43), and doesn't even make $1M so we could blow his contract out of the water.
I'm guessing it's because like Fitzgerald, he is coaching at his alma mater. Thoughts?
January 7th, 2011 at 7:02 PM ^
I imagine T. Boone would match anything financial if it came to that. At that point why leave your alma mater where success is high right now and expectations aren't as bad?
January 7th, 2011 at 7:11 PM ^
My wishlist for candidates
1. Lou Holtz
2. Lane Kiffin
3. Mike Haywood
