Parallels to year 8 Harbaugh year 6

Submitted by KentuckianaWolverine on November 22nd, 2020 at 5:58 PM

Beilein took over a mediocre Michigan team, and built them back to being respectable.  Year 8 hit, and they got blitzed with weird injuries and bad luck, along with playing a bunch of new (young) players.  Every post I saw on here was FIRE BEILEIN!  Obviously, that didn't happen, and he turned it around.  He left on his own terms, and left Michigan in a MUCH better position than what he inherited.

Harbaugh took over a team that was more than mediocre.  They were absolutely awful.  He came in and immediately brought Michigan back to respectability (raising the fan base's expectations to the level of unreasonable).  Year 6 has been crushed with injuries, bad luck, COVID related silliness (less games, no spring practice, season canceled and then reestablished, and last minute opt outs of a few of our best players), and trying to replace the roster with young and inexperienced players.  Every post on here is FIRE HARBAUGH!

If our own history of post "FIRE CARR!" hasn't taught us anything......or other "blue blood" programs struggling to find former glory, after replacing coaches......then look no further than our very own basketball program.  The difference between a terrible season and a good season could just be 1 year of some experience, less injuries and more experience away.  ?

your post however, is trying to compare year 8 of Beilein to year 6 of Harbaugh.

By year 6 of Beilein, Michigan basketball was already clicking...

Beilein had a ton of doubters going into Year 4, despite getting into the round of 32 in his second year, but he won a share of the B1G title in his fifth year

In his 6th year, Beilien's team was national runners up

But we’re not piling up 10-win seasons!!!

not counting bowl games he’s won, in order; 9, 10, 8, 10, 9.  That’s 40%. Ok, you could give him the one bowl win for another one to get to 60% if you want to be generous.

I would not say that’s “piling them up”. His best season was definitely 2016 and we lost the last 3 games that year. He hasn’t appeared in a championship game of any kind, has lost all OSU games, got dominated in 3/5, soon to be 4/6 of them and has only a .500 record to Michigan State.

Combine all that with the product on the field this year and it’s a MASSIVE regression.

It is you who is objectively dumb.

1) 10 win seasons at Iowa state, Indiana, and Cincinnati are major accomplishments. A 10 win season at Michigan is expected.

2) Harbaugh hasn’t beaten OSU...not even once. It would be one thing to lose half the time or even most of the time but to never win and not be competitive in the majority of the games is a completely different story.

3) Your comment about Beilein in the NBA is ridiculous. The college and pro games are vastly different. What was Saban’s record in the NFL? See how dumb that sounds?

The problem is that if Ohio State is your dip stick, then you are almost always going to come up short. Ohio State under Urban and Day have been out of this world good. Meaning that only Clemson and Alabama can enter that conversation. That's a darn near impossible standard to live up to. Michigan has been unlucky in a number of games which may have taken some of the heat off of Harbaugh but what other coach has out performed Harbaugh in the B1G? Franklin? Franklin has beaten Ohio State once, in a bad weather game and has more wins but Franklin has played an easier schedule than Harbaugh and he has a losing record to Harbaugh. Chryst? Put Michigan in the West and only play Ohio State in cross over games and Harbaugh has the same results, a lot of wins. Big Ten West Titles and losses to Ohio State.

Record wise the team before Beilein was better but the talent levels absolutely were not. Harbaugh inherited one of the most talented Michigan teams in the last 20 years as shown by how many players were drafted in 2017.

Also Michigan hadn't even been to the tournament in ten years and their facilities in basketball were among the Big Ten's worst when Beilein got here compared to Harbaugh who has gotten everything he's asked for. There's no comparison.

First he was Urban, then Dabo, then Brian Kelly.

Looks like we ran out of ludicrous football comparisons, so we on to basketball now. Lmao.

Beilein walked into a dead program and rebuilt it ground up. Harbaugh walked into a top 10 at least stocked cabinet and somehow managed to deplete the roster even on a bedrock of 2 top 10 recruiting classes bc of his stubborn/weird persona.

Imagine if this were any other coach losing in historic program fashion...

The Harbaugh cult is truly something.

Unless I misunderstood you, you inferred that he inherited a top-10 program which he did not. He definitely inherited pieces, as I indicated, on both offense and defense - needed growth, maturity and good coaching not to mention JR under center - they got all of this with JH coaching not BH - I guess you could say we’re both right.

My problem with the comparison (though I actually think it is fine to bring up, unlike others): Beilein was known to be a VERY good coach by many. Real X's and O's type guy whom everyone respected as a game strategist. Big difference is that Harbs doesn't seem to have a particular coaching talent.

I think the reason most people are ready to move on from Harbaugh is not just the record and youth on the team. It's because week-in-week-out the team looks ill prepared for the opponent, making all kinds of mental mistakes, displaying nonsensical play calling (2nd half against Rutgers was better, at least offensively), obviously bad personnel decisions, and basically incapable of making in game adjustments that the team can execute.

In other words, year 8 struggles under Beilein was about underdeveloped talent not ready to see the court. You could understand the game plan and the strategy, it was just the guys available to play that season were not either ready or able to execute. This team under Harbaugh has the talent and ability to execute and win easily against Michigan State and Rutgers. They should be competitive against Wisconsin who just put up a measly 8 points against Northwestern. The coaches simply are not putting the players in a position to succeed. That is the reason so many people are ready to move on from Harbaugh.

Harbaugh has lost his fire!  You can see it in the team and their emotions.  They are all just going through the motions and "trying" to execute.  He also needs to get rid of those damn glasses that remind me of Woody Hayes!

Pretty sure there was a lot of Beilien supporters during that time frame.

People certainly were not happy, but Beilein actually won things which gave people more confidence in him.

First of all  your title is weird and vague.

A better title would be:

Beilein year 8, Harbaugh year 6 parallels.

Anyway, I'm so sick of these excuses, Beilein actually developed guys, especially 2 and 3 star guys, whereas with  Harbaugh, 4 and 5 star guys seem to regress.

Also, Harbaugh comes off like a weird cat and Beilein is classy and dignified.

One more thing, Beilein brought in assts. and  allowed them to do that voodoo that they do, Harbaugh...not so much.

I really wish one of the Harbaugh apologists was self-aware enough to have an honest conversation with. I'm super curious about their need to defend him. They can't all be friends and family.

What have you seen that leads you to believe we're headed anywhere but mediocrity? Have you seen the clock management? Did you see the game plan in overtime last night? He's trying to win games with defense in the era of offense and with a shitty defense. Why was Milton playing, when they clearly wanted him to be a game manager and he clearly is unsuited for that role and they don't run the ball well? I could go on but we can start there.

I cannot argue with anything you said except to say it is an off year - too many playmakers hurt including our best CB and WR opting out - part of our issue is we, as a fanbase, subjectively overhype our players before the season starts without looking at things from a 360-degree approach - I knew this was going to be a rough year especially after AT and NC opted out - we had glaring weaknesses before the season and certainly have added more with injuries piling up. They tried JM under center because he has huge upside - it has not worked - I truly think they should have handed the keys to CM a bit earlier so if you want to criticize JH for that then go right ahead - it’s acceptable. What is not acceptable is some fans thinking that we could lose a ton of playmakers and somehow still honestly believe we should be top-10 because that’s just short-sidedness - we are not that kind of program and anyone who believes that is too used to playing video game football on the easiest settings.

Naaa not really - just been involved in sports for too long to firmly know things don’t always go according to plan. If you’re saying that JH has lost his mojo then I guess I can meet you halfway but if your “substance” is that JH has been a failure and a waste for six years well sorry that’s just not being objective and honest.

It’s actually quite simple why I support him...

Pre JH:

2008: 3-9 & 2-6

2009: 5-7 & 1-7

2010: 7-6 & 3-5

2011: 11-2 & 6-2

2012: 8-5 & 6-2

2013: 7-6 & 3-5

2014: 5-7 & 3-5

JH years:

2015: 10-3 & 6-2

2016: 10-3 & 7-2

2017: 8-5 & 5-4

2018: 10-3 & 8-1

2019: 9-4 & 6-3

Fairly cut and dry with me actually my man
