OT - Will Penn State Fines Affect the PSU Hockey Program and Creation of the B1G Conference

Submitted by U of M in TX on

As the title states, will the fine affect the PSU hockey program and creation of the B1G hockey conference?

No, and this was already addressed in one of the other threads, and pretty close to the top, too. I bet you can find it in less than 30 seconds. I thought some of the threads that got deleted earlier today should have stayed. But this isn't necessary.

No I don't think so. From what I've been reading part of the NCAA punishment is that no athletic teams can be shut down to help fund the fine

I've read elsewhere, and I kind of agree with it, but these penalties not only crush football, but possibly the whole AD. It's not simply the paying of $60 mill (the NCAA said they can't cut other funding), but more along the lines of the NCAA choking PSU's source of cash flow. So in a round about way, this could hurt other non-revenue sports pretty big.

This is what I've been thinking, in a round about way while they cant take monies scheduled to be spent from other sports what if they have no money to begin with and/or for a sport that hasnt even officially begun yet? (did they announce they were going varsity? I know a big donor ponied up the money to fund the arena but i'm in the dark past that)

this doesn't affect the hockey program at all or other programs that had nothing to do with the Paterno staff or administration. Next subject please.

PSU football is screwed over for a ltest a decade anyway. They probably shouldn't ruin their other sports while they're at it.

A smarter plan would be, since they're completely screwed in football, to employ a staff of no-name coaches that they can pay fractional salaries and recoup millions, then they'll be in a less squeezed position when they get out from under penalties and are ready to rebuild.

Yes. If PSU can't start their hockey program, Big Ten hockey couldnt function as a conference. The CCHA already has been imploded and the Big Ten teams would be screwed. So we do care.
But! The language of the punishment makes it seem that PSU isn't allowed to cut from other programs to pay fines

They suddenly have a ton of sports fans who have nothing to root for anymore, might actually help hockey take off if they can be decent.

Their hockey program is going to be as bad as their football team is going to be. Can't wait to smoke them for 4 easy wins in hockey.
