OT- Who's Rooting for the STARS today?

Submitted by kozmo6011 on

With a Wings win coupled with a Stars win, Chicago will not make the playoffs. This would be awesome because i know, at least up here at ferris, that everyone from chicago thinks all of their teams are gods gift to each given sport.

it would also back up the claim that they did in fact buy the trophy last year and then promptly gut their roster.

GO WINGS and for today go stars!!

im not sure how dallas can make the playoffs ? the first tiebreaker i believe, is wins. and even with a dallas win and chicago loss, chicago would have more wins. if anyone could explain how dallas is still in it id appeciate it...........

But that seems to be the case.

The first tiebreaker is wins accumulated, that's correct. However, it excludes wins from a shootout (awesome rule change by the way). If the Stars win, both teams have 38 ROW (Regulation plus Overtime Wins).

After that stat, the tiebreaker becomes the greater number of points earned in games between the tied teams. Then after that, the greater differential between goals for and against for the entire regular season.

Nope, a win is just 2 points.  I don't think Dallas has a shot.

Here's the tiebreaker procedure from NHL.com:

If two or more clubs are tied in points during the regular season, the standing of the clubs is determined in the following order:

  • The fewer number of games played (i.e., superior points percentage).
  • The greater number of games won, excluding games won in the Shootout (NEW for 2010-11). This figure is reflected in the ROW column.
  • The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. If more than two clubs are tied, the higher percentage of available points earned in games among those clubs, and not including any "odd" games, shall be used to determine the standing.
  • The greater differential between goals for and against for the entire regular season.

If the Stars win in regulation and the Hawks lose in regulation, both would have the same number in the ROW column, so we'd move to point 3.

I don't know the record between the two clubs though.

From prior linked article-

The Blackhawks go into that finale two points ahead of Dallas for the Western Conference’s final playoff spot. But a Stars victory—they’re playing non-playoff qualifier Minnesota on Sunday night—would force Chicago to at least get one point against the Red Wings. The scenarios are simple: If the Stars win and the Blackhawks lose in regulation, they’re out. If the Stars lose or the Hawks get one or two points, Chicago is in.
‘We (were) going into these last two games assuming that (the Stars were) going to win out, pretty much,’’ Hawks captain Jonathan Toews told the Chicago Tribune. ‘‘We (had) to do the same thing. It’s always been up to us. It’s always been about how we prepare, how we play and how bad we want it.’’

Nothing better for a Wings fan than a win against the Hawks coupled with the Hawks missing the playoffs.  Time for the veterans to step up and shut down that little girl Hossa.

my fellow Wing fans have for Hossa is really dumb to me. Guy did the Wings a favor 2 years ago by signing a one year deal with them and scored 40 goals for the Wings, and than was offered a deal by the Blackhawks that no sane person could pass up.  The Hossa hate makes absolutely no sense, unless any sane person could say they would pass up the deal that the Blackhawks offered him.

Hossa actually turned down a much better, long-term deal from the Penguins to sign with us that year.  He played his ass off (through injuries in the playoffs) for us and then, as you said, took a great offer from the Hawks.

There are a lot of reasons for Wings fans to hate the Blackhawks, but Hossa isn't one of them.

The NHL wants the Hawks in the playoffs, I say detroit has 1 goal disallowed and takes around 9 penalties in the game. 3-2 Chicago in OT.

If stars win and hawks lose....the stars get the 8 seed. Nothing to argue about. I hate Chicago sports teams, but Steve Ott from the stars is from my hometown and he's a real prick so it's a tough call.

Their obession with the Red Wings is scary. I've been to the United Center twice and instead of chanting "Let's Go Hawks!" they spend more time yelling "Detroit Sucks!". When the scoreboard says differently they get really defensive when you point that out.

I don't really care for any Chicago sports fans in general. Everyone talks about Philly fans or Boston or New York but Chicago is right up there. They are obnoxious and rude for all sports, especially baseball and hockey. By contrast the Maple Leaf fans at the Joe a couple weeks ago were great. They were loud, cheered their team and were really interested in talking about hockey. The fans across the aisle were even better because we talked about the Wings and Leafs playing at Michigan Stadium when there is another Big Chill.

Warning: I'm going to flog a dead horse here.  Be warned.

"Everyone talks about Philly fans or Boston or New York but Chicago is right up there."

Agreed, very much.  Cubs and Bears fans get plenty of national attention, but it always seems to fall short of what's showered on the coastal teams.  Go figure.

i will give you blackhawks fans; who just crawled out of the woodwork two years ago.  i've lived here over 10 yrs; rarely saw hawks garb.  now everyone wears it (still with the store creases in them), claiming they've been hawks fans forever.

bears fans, in general, are also a-holes.

baseball fans though? don't get that one.  they have nothing on any other team, period.  one title between them in over 80 years.  i shut them up pretty quickly when they open their yaps.

on opening day, a guy had a chicago cub trivia book.  i destroyed the other 6 so-called cub fans, leaving the quizzer laughing.  if the answer wasn't sammy sosa, they didn't know it.

I don't have any experience with Cubs fans but the White Sox fans get pretty mouthy if they're in the hunt. Bears fans are not great but neither a many of the Lions fans! Lions fans think they score a touchdown the game is going to be close one. Then come the next three quarters and that excitement turns to drunken anger. Blackhawks fans are the worst though as far as visiting hockey teams to Detroit.

I'm from the area as well and I hate it. I happen to be a Wings fan, but I like that hockey has blown up in Chicago. However, people who don't know dick about the game and make stupid comments and try to argue it, not so much.

Cool story brah warning:

When I was younger we would play every year at the United Center (one of their off ice officials is a family friend, so he'd get us picked). As part of the deal, you have to agree to sell an allotment of tickets. It was a well known fact that unless Detroit or a good St. Louis team was in town the place would never sell out, and thus the ticket money would be lost. That place was empty in the early 2000's, and now everyone has been a "fan for life".

exactly do opposing fans think that the chant is an insult, considering most Red Wing fans like myself don't even live in Detroit. Same is true for most Tiger and Lion fans as well. There is no denying the sad state of the city of Detroit, but it isn't an insult when most Detroit sports fans don't even live there.

Nashville fans are the other fans I notice doing the "Detroit sucks" often, which cracks me up considering the Predators have won absolutely nothing in their short history.

I'm almost wondering if you intentionally missed the point here.  Most fans of most teams do not live in the city that is attached to the name.  Do you think most Angels fans live in Anaheim?  Yankees fans?  The team is connected to the name; fans of rival teams dislike the other team, say they suck.  Jesus.

To the OP: What % of students at Ferris are from Chicago and its 'burbs?  I've always assumed that Michiganders made up 90+% of the total.  (I suppose that could still be the case.)

The reason why Dallas would make it if Chicago loses in regulation and Dallas wins is because Dallas leads the season series 6 points to 3 points.  Both teams would be tied in points, tied for the first tiebreaker and Dallas would win the second tiebreaker (head-to-head).

I have to say I am conflicted on this game. I hate the Hawks and removing them from the playoffs would make me very happy.

Although, If Chicago were to win Detroit would recieve Nashville in the first round. Factoring in the team and location I believe it would be a much better matchup than Phoenix.

I really can't decide so GO WINGS!

Nashville is a very good team. Great defense, coach, and fantastic goalie.

Phoenix has a great goalie, better offense, and a good defense, but not Nashville good. Plus travel time to Phoenix is longer.

Its a toss up. The western conf. is ridiculously good this year.
