OT: What are your other interests?

Submitted by MGJS SuperKick Party on
We're getting near the end of the OT system, and Nike had passed us by until 1 pm... But I was wondering, what are everyone's interests outside of Michigan Athletics? I am an avid golfer, I used to better than I am now, but I can still hold my own. I know more about golf clubs than I would like to admit. I love Walt Disney World. It's one of my favorite places on planet earth. I actually listen to multiple Disney Podcasts during the day. Craft beer and coffee are fun "hobbies", but are expensive.

but just don't have the time to get out very often. Have coached a lot, but now enjoy watching my daughter play softball, since she does it in college now I realize her career is drawing to an end, so try to spend as much time as I can watching her play.

Waverunners, Wine/Scotch/Bourbon, Hunting/Fishing, Travel (need 3 more states, SD, ND, MT, to complete the 50) and only one more continent to go.

... sadly, most my interests are deferred as we have 3 little ones that take up most my time.  Hope to pick them up again in a couple years. They include:

1) Climbing rocks.

2) Backcountry camping.

3) Reading. (I know lame, but I love it).

4) Writing short stories that will never be good enough to publish.

Game of Thrones would be one for me...read all the books in six months between S4 and S5...I follow all the Reddit boards for theories etc...and really appreciate the weekly recap discussions on the Board.

Climbing and sourdough bread baking at the moment. Just went on my first outdoor climbing trip to Red River Gorge and it was life-alteringly fun.

Poker (cashed in only WSOP event I played this summer), Beer (probably have tried an average of 4-6 new beers per month since 2014), Orioles Baseball (season ticket holder), concerts (4 GNR reunion shows already this year), and most importantly kids (softball, soccer, and lacrosse games to pay and cheer for).

Reading, Soccer (surprise) and craft beer. I don't brew as much as I used to but am a relatively competent homebrewer when I actually do it.

I try to read one book per week (depending on length), it doesn't always work out that way but it's a good goal. The AAPL is one of the best library systems I've ever seen and constantly use it.

I love to think about all the things that I want to do or should be doing but I mainly just sit on my ass and watch tv with an occasional round of golf or bike ride thrown in.

Fishing/boating, hunting, playing basketball, gardening and camping. Basically, I enjoy being on the water or in the woods. I also have three vegetable gardens (may have over done myself) this year, one at my house, one at my dad's and one at the fiancee's parents.

Heading to Frankfort this weekend to camp and salmon fish for a week. I've pretty much already checked out at work....hence why I am on here.

I like to screenprint on textiles (I'm obsessed with patterns), read cookbooks and cook, tackle the New York Times crossword puzzle, and talk politics, but not here.

The humblebragging and richguying are pretty minimal in this thread.

I'm just now getting back into some hobbies. I moved across the country for a girl and put everything to the side to work and build the relationship, but now that she booted me after 18 months to focus on her career, it's time to get back to my roots. Lifting, music, and now surfing are helping me find my way back.

day when i still lived in Windsor sports were my life... watched sports all of the time (even curling), worked at a sports bar/sports complex (for the windsorites on here, yes it was the ice park), and played basketball and slo-pitch softball...

and out of all of that slo-pitch was the 1 thing that i did almost everyday... i played in leagues 6 nights a week, 2 coed teams, 3 mens teams, subbed for a couple of other teams and was playing in tourneys almost every weekend... i kept my gear in the trunk of my car at all times because if i was at a park where my buddies were playing on a night i wasn't playing and they were going to be short i could play... i was rated a B or C player depending on the association the league or turney was affliliated with...

when i moved to Michigan that all came to an end pretty quick, i was able to play on a mens team for 2 years but they took mens REC ball way to seriously so i got far away from that... i was able to play on a couple of coed teams after that but then the wife got pregnant with our twins and that was the end of my playing days for the time being...

I am currently a stay-at-home mom with 2 (soon to be 3) kiddos so some of my personal interests are shelved for the time being, which is fine. If I were kid free I would say reading, kayaking, and cooking (which I still do, just not as inventively).  Some things I am still able to do that I enjoy are giving piano lessons, working with middle schoolers at our church, and currently MGoHusband and I (but mostly MGoHusband) are renovating and flipping a large 1880's Victorian that we picked up for a song last year.  Seeing the house slowly change over the past year has been extremely satisfying!

My other interests are:

- watching and coaching my boys as they play baseball and football

- smoking some type of animal carcas on my Big Green Egg

- Bigfoot (a new addiction after visiting the Bigfoot Museum up in the Blue Ridge Mountains)

I spend a great deal of the summer sailing.  Racing, actually.  As many as three days a week.  There's three different boats I race on, not counting when I fly to Connecticut to race out there,  generally once a year, which I'll be doing again on Labor Day weekend.

In addition to Michigan athletics, I am also a rather avid baseball afficianado and watch quite a bit above and beyond the Tigers. The same goes for basketball and football - I'll watch games up and down the spectrum of the sport beyond the Wolverines, Pistons and Lions.

I am also into music - composition and collecting - and have one of the more extensive collections of funk fusion, New Wave, old school techno and a few other things that I am aware of anyway. I also have sizeable classical and rock collections. I read quite voraciously too, mainly history, science fiction and mystery-thriller type stories.

I keep up with my language skills - French and German as well as a bit of Dutch, in my case. I still have four years of Latin burned into my head too, some of which I mutter when I don't want to be understood. I also am an avid cook, so I spend a lot of time in the kitchen too.

Huge Star Trek fan as well - I own a nice collection of rank insignia from the various series as well as model ships, including a fw hard to find ones. Great fan of several BBC shows too, past and present.

I was a regular on the jogging circuit too, but a health scare in December put a damper on that. I have been rebuilding my strength and reintegrating my workout and am sort of back at that already though, so we're good on the health front.

There's more, but I am boring people already, I am sure.

Recently as my job has sucked more and more, I've begun to wonder if mid-Michigan could support a badminton-specific club. UofM and MSU both have "badminton clubs" that use general purpose facilities. They get 2-3 hours 2-3 days a week. Would an actual club halfway between EL and A2 be able to make a go of it? As A2 and EL continue to get more of an international flavor, the demographics are trending the right way. Would I be better off starting a club in one of those two cities? Land is cheap, at least relative to where I currently reside. I could supplement my income selling birdies, shoes, and  energy drinks.

The fact that I'm the first person to mention badminton in this thread suggests to me that the answer to my question is no so I'd better get back to my lousy job sacrificing for the country by making money for me. (Hey, no politics!)

I like piña coladas and gettin' caught in the rain, and the feel of the ocean and the taste of champagne, and making love at midnight in the dunes on the cape.

I used to be pretty heavily involved in music.  Early 90's grew up in LA and worked with CVE at the good life cafe in South Central.  Basically making beats for guys like Freestyle Fellowship, Ras Kass, Jurassic 5.  Probably one of the most fun times I have had in life, great vibe at the cafe, and probably why I dispise most rappers of today.  Working with guys who may not have mainstream appeal, but could rap circles around any rapper today and most back then.  I was in the building when Fat Joe got booed out of there because he was beyond wack.  Moved to the midwest in 94 and the music had to take a back seat to real life, but I still enjoy making music.

Recently I realized I was playing computer solitair on my downtime. Not that theres anything wrong with that, but I just bought a ukulele to curb that. Haven't played an instrument since clarinet growing up. I've only had it for 2 days and am learning strumming and just a few chords. If anyone has pointers I'm open.

Anyone else roast their own?

I've been at it for about 15 years or so. I never come up with anything to the standards of the best commercial roasters (Intelligentsia, Peets before they went public, Tribal Grounds before she went bankrupt) but it's usually passable and it's a lot of fun. Sort of like homebrewing except it doesn't take nearly as long.

Hello! Good question. It usually depends on the mood. I can watch TV shows, movies, sex videos on xossipy, play games, listen to the music and so on. Also I like to read news and follow social networks.
