OT: Update on Damar Hamlin

Submitted by Amazinblu on January 5th, 2023 at 1:53 PM

The Medical staff at the U - Cincy hospital are giving an update on Damar Hamlin.  It appears his neurological functions are intact, which is great news.

The intubation prevents Damar from speaking, but he is able to communicate in writing.  This, would seem to be a very good sign.

The medical staff are discussing, in a positive manner, the way the “team and on the field staff” responded.

Wishing Damar a complete recovery.

Also read today he's able to hold hands with his loved ones and is responding to motor requests which is wonderful.  I know there is ongoing concern with possible lung damage, hopefully nothing that time and the great doctors at UC cant heal.

Good luck Damar.  You literally have the entire country pulling for you.

Absolutely.  There are some great lessons here if we as a country have the wisdom to accept them.

Upon the tragedy, all people of all faiths, races, genders, ages, backgrounds, etc, etc came together to support, pray for, and pull for this young man.  There was a collective empathy for Damar that we rarely see on a daily basis anymore.

If we could put the same sort of thoughtful effort towards working together in many aspects of life, I think we'd be in a much better place collectively.  Damar proved we still have the capacity to love each other and work together despite all our differences.

To be completely objective about that issue, what I saw when I You Tubed it the next day were a lot of people of highly dubious credentials speculating that it was anything else but the vaccine.  To be clear, I have no idea what caused this, but there sure were a bunch of self-proclaimed experts declaring precisely what it was without any possible way of knowing it within hours and even minutes after it happened.

I don’t know about any of that but I do know there are studies being done regarding serious heart related side effects from the Covid vaccine.  Even the CDC acknowledges that.  If there is an issue I’m sure we can agree that we should all know about it and respond accordingly.  That doesn’t seem political to me, or at least I don’t know how it could be.

I mean, there has been a pretty substantial uptick in on field heart related incidents in athletes in the last couple of years, particularly soccer players in Europe.  It isn’t a secret.  It is ascertainable by the most basic Google search.  Is it related to the vaccine?  No clue.  The fact that it is happening though is not really subject to debate.

"It is ascertainable by the most basic Google search."

Careful. Guess what made the Top Ten here?

This (from way back in 2008 and featuring RFK Jr., who's generally considered a quack):

Don't forget to think critically.

Clarification: I'm open to the idea that vaccines are behind the rise in on-field cardiac events. Some numbers and references would be helpful. I'm not inclined to trust you otherwise. : )

Ok, so we agree that neither of us can prove or disprove that about the sun, that’s a starting point.

As to the vaccine, Statistical evidence has shown an increase in heart related issues, specifically myocarditis, among young, healthy, predominantly male subjects after the Covid 19 vaccine, particularly the second dose.

Can you prove the spike is not related to the vaccine?  Or is the trick to just keep raising the burden of proof so high that it can never be proven?  Do I need testimony from the vaccine?  How does this new science work exactly?

Many viruses, including those that cause the common cold (adenoviruses) and COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2 virus), are linked to myocarditis and other forms of heart disease. Given the enormous number of people who've had COVID-19 in the past three years, it isn't surprising that more cases of heart disease are being reported among athletes.

It seems to me it's political not in the right/left, Rep/Dem sense of the inside baseball the media love to stoke and track, but political in a more fundamental sense: the well documented erosion of trust in public institutions that recent events have brought forth.  That's a challenge to the credibility of the system that is political at its core.  But now we are discussing politics, so. . . .  Nevertheless, that's one way it could be political.

"If we could put the same sort of thoughtful effort towards working together in many aspects of life, I think we'd be in a much better place collectively."

The singular goal of almost all American politicians is to prevent this from happening. It is the largest threat to their power, and they know it.

I was listening to Rich Eisen today and apparently Demar asked the doctor if the Bills won the game and the doctor replied yes....you won in the game of life. So touching and heartwarming to see he's getting better.

It sure says a lot about him that one of his first concerns is how his team did, this is an amazing story that will induce some Hollywood movie(s) for sure.

After working in an ICU for 5 years, seeing anoxic injuries for years I had a lot of concerns. But it happened in the best of circumstances, witnessed with a good number of competent staff on hand. It's good to hear he's doing well.

And the lung damage could either be a lung contusion from the hit or possibly from compressions/ventilation after. He's should be healthy enough his ribs shouldn't snap likes straw, fortunately.

Without getting myself into a HIPPA violation I will just say I know someone who is aware of the situation first hand.  Damar had nine minutes of VERY agressive CPR performed on the field so your initial speculation as the cause of the lung distress is most likely correct.

And the vent did nothing to help matters afterwards that's for sure.

Scary situation for sure.  I wonder if it was commotio cordis or if he just had a previously undiagnosed structural heart issue.

It reminded me of the soccer player, Christian Eriksen that had a cardiac arrest during a match a few years ago.

Commotio cordis is the only thing I've heard speculated (other than the moronic iTs tHe vAcCiNe) But since the doctors haven't said,  it's speculation.  But it makes the most sense.  It was the first thing I thought of- I knew of a softball player that this happened to a few years back. I'm glad he's making progress-- he's so young, even if he never plays another down of football he has his whole life in front of him.

Coley Harvey reporting he asked, "who won the game?".

Edit*  Not gonna lie, when I heard the news this morning he had opened his eyes I was a little verklempt.  This is the only news I've been really waiting to hear.  Can't imagine how the family, team and the organization felt hearing that.  Granted he's not out of the woods yet, this has to feel so, so good for them.

Twitch, as you point out - “He’s still not out of the woods yet” - is accurate and a paraphrase of what the U-C medical staff presented.

He’s still not breathing on his own - I’m not a physician, but assume, the intubation supports his breathing.

For me, Damar’s ability to “write” responses to the questions he was being asked addressed the biggest concern I had - which was his neurological function.  He can hear what is being asked, he comprehends it, and has both cognitive and neurological function to respond.

Wishing his recovery continues - be it “slowly and surely”, or “a bit quicker”.  Great news…

Just saw this, so great to hear. I lived in Buffalo for a time, just a couple miles down the road from the stadium and became a big Bills fan while living there. Such a crazy thing to happen, I know the fans and team are sending much love and prayer his way, as well as seemingly the whole country. Go Bills and go Damar!

This is great. Hopefully it continues. I normally hate it when people record and post private moments, but I hope they record his reaction when he is recovered enough and someone tells him to check out his toy raising gofundme that had $2500 in before the game.
