OT: UNC to avoid punishment?
I guess it's good to be a top-tier program in the south:

Hey, if you're gonna give them money for nothing*, why not give them grades for nothing too?
* I know they actually do more than 95% of Americans daily and I support a Full cost of attend + annuity/stipend paid out to the athletes.
And the chicks for free
That would be Louisville.
They weren't free.
If that really happened, they'd be in...Dire Straits?
I'll show myself out.
How will athletic scholarships work if Bernie is elected?

Bernie: "If elected, I will break up the big schools!"
Cynic: "What does that mean, Bernie? Can you even do that? And how will that help with the underlying problems of inequality in America???"
Bernie: "Because I will BREAK UP the big schools!"
Cynic: "Yeah, I got that part. But again, how will that really help?"
Bernie: "NCAA is bad! Smaller schools will be better!!!"
Cynic: "OK, so are you really saying that if we take the 6 largest schools and make them 18 schools, somehow everyone will become highly ethical and altruistic? Really??"
Bernie: "BIG BAD, WEED AND BEN AND JERRY'S GOOD!"
Cynic: "I give up..."

any hope he had will be over so I guess we'll never know. :(

Really it was over before it started.

But funny, regardless.
So, from what I've read, they can't get into trouble because even non-student-athletes could take fake classes--so they weren't 'benefits.' And, if they absolutely have to get into trouble, the football and men's basketball teams are now off limits because theyvr mysteriously been dropped from the list of allegations, and all blame goes to the women's basketball team? Sounds about right.

Well thank God those bastards didn't run satellite camps, the NCAA would have disbanded the program and had the administration tarred and feathered.
Since the fake major started, 3,000 students graduated with a degree in that program. Half of which were athletes, according to the whistleblower in her book.
And the NCAA will try to make us believe that all 1,500 athletes who graduated fraudulently were women's basketball players.
I am really pissed about this. UNC is going to "sacrifice" the women's basketball program and their football and men's basketball programs won't suffer any consequences.
Death to the NCAA.
That sounds perfectly fine as long as the academic reputation of the school goes way down the toilet. If the school is willing to sacrifice that for athletics, fine by me. But I know we, and our administration, would die before they let athletics take down academics. If UNC doesn't care, let em tank (this all assumes this would actually affect them, and who knows if it will)
yep, they should remove accreditation from anyone who took these courses. make their diplomas worth nothing.

You might want to get off that high horse, a lot of athletes do general studies as their major at michigan and there exists an entire list of classes that are "easy" a's or where a professor will let you cheat. If you are an athlete and don't want to take any real classes its pretty easy.
April 26th, 2016 at 10:09 AM ^
that's a pretty serious allegation of cheating.
an easy major is not the same as a fake major with fake classes. you are a miserable troll, as per usual.
April 26th, 2016 at 11:23 AM ^
My point was that the fake classes were open to non-athletes. And they were actual fake classes, not easy A's. Troll somewhere else.
April 26th, 2016 at 11:51 AM ^
you act like General Studies is automatically easy. there aren't classes called General Studies, you take the same classes as all the rest of the majors. you just get to pick which classes you want but you need at least 60 credits of upper level classes. So it's not necessarily any easier than a psych or history major.
History major now sad. Me no has good degree
Looks like the men's basketball team has a fall guy in the women's basketball team.

Auto upvoting continues a while longer.
Those dumb girl jocks, ruining it for everyone.
I just can't put my finger on it.

the lack of

?
I mean come on, it's not like they were stretching, or anything. Just a little harmless lack of institutional control.
If the women's basketball program did any satellite camps they will receive the death penalty.
UNC = NCAA favoirite child. They get special treatment and can do no wrong.
It's a joke if the athletics department gets off scott free, but the University has already been severely punished. I belive their accreditation is on probation, which on the administrative side, is a huge deal and a big hassle. One little screw up, and the University could lose all federal and state funding.
I believe the probation is almost over. I think it was only for one year, starting last summer.
This piece from the president of Macalester College from two years ago is pretty scathing. Wonder what he is thinking now?
http://chronicle.com/blogs/conversation/2014/10/24/unc-chapel-hill-shou…
You have to love this quote from a College President:
"Nor is it primarily a matter for the NCAA, which is more a cause of than a solution to the problem of athletics in American higher education."
That's one of the most serious things the NCAA can hit them with. WBB is obviously going to take the brunt of the penalties, but I don't think they will only apply to them.
As far the academic side goes, it's hard to believe UNC is in any danger of losing their state and federal funding, despite their probation. This is a clear case where they are too big to fail. If they screwed up again today, their probation would get extended.
Sports are just not that big of a deal. Why the fuck would anyone risk losing federal/state funding? That's an actual death penalty. That impacts thousands of students and professors. If I was in the top leadership, heads would roll from the president on down.

haha! This actually made me lol.
From UNC and am ashamed of the whole academic scandal and the way the school has "handled" it. UNC has always had a good reputation among state schools, although a notch below Michigan, Cal and UVA but I feel like my degree is somewhat tarnished now
you read?
and to withhold all that $ you were going to send them to build 'cranky dave auditorium'
I did pledge money to the school and have not fulfilled it. Not enough to build my own auditorium though...
Are full of shit.
You are NO North Carolina graduate.
So I'm driving to a youth soccer tournament with another soccer dad (who is a UNC grad) a few months ago, and the following conversation transpires:
EM - Do you think your Tar Heels will go all the way this year?
Other Dad - Hard to say, but I have had a hard time pulling for them the past couple of years anyway.
EM - Because of the academic fraud and all the cover-up/deflection stuff?
OD - The problem's really been a black eye for them.
EM - A black guy? Hunh. ... What?
OD - A black eye, you fucking idiot. A black eye.
(It's not that OD's wrong, but he could have enunciated a lot better. Just another way my life somewhat imitates Key & Peele sketches.)
