OT - Tigers FSD Broadcast - Gibby's Announcing

Submitted by Larry Sellers on

I haven't gotten to watch many Tiger's games this season, but it's a light morning in the office, so I have got it on in the background. Man, Kirk Gibson is brutal. His analysis is decent, but his delivery is lifeless. Maybe it's just me, but he just comes off so bored.

What do you guys think? Is the insight worth the bland delivery? For me, I'd take Rod Allen every day.

Just the dull and lifeless tone he delivers the analysis with makes me sleepy. He just seems like he couldn't care less that there is a baseball game going on in front of him.

Doesn't he have Parkinsons or something like that?  I like having him do the broadcasts. He was one of my favorite players growing up.

I can speak from experience as my dad has Parkinson's that your tone and delivery definitely do change with the progression of the illness, and it sounds like Gibson is at that point. I don't know how far exactly he is along with the disease really though. I do like his analysis and I do like to listen despite the delivery being a bit monotone.

Ummm, Gibby got fired with a few days left in the 2014 season. They finished that year with a 64-98 record. Dude had 4.5 years managing and produced exactly 1 winning season and 2 81-81 finishes.

his record is below.  shows he took over a losing outfit, shot them up to 94 wins, had a couple of .500 seasons, then one bad season.

53 Arizona Diamondbacks NL 2nd of 2 34 49 .410 0 83 5 0 0
2 2011 54 Arizona Diamondbacks NL   94 68 .580 0 162 1 2 3 .400
3 2012 55 Arizona Diamondbacks NL   81 81 .500 0 162 3 0 0
4 2013 56 Arizona Diamondbacks NL   81 81 .500 0 162 2 0 0
5 2014 57 Arizona Diamondbacks NL 1st of 2 63 96 .396 0 159 5 0 0

I love Gibby for his days as a player and I know he suffers from Parkinsons, but he is a challenge to listen to. I actually liked Jack Morris a lot when he was a guest commentator, but yeah, Rod is definitely ok. He seems to have his detractors, too.

Despite his subdued demeanor, I always learn something new about the game listening to Gibby. His insights go into technical areas that I had never considered. Rod Allen, on the other hand, is a blowhard homer who never gets into the intricacies of the game, and when Miggy was tearing it up a few years back always sounded like he couldn't wait to give him a blowjob. Allen represents the worst aspects of color analysis.

I take the opposite approach. I live out of market and don't have any sort of league pass, so I only get to watch a few games, but I love having Gibby in the booth. Maybe it's because I'm a boring-as-shit grad student, but I'll take a lifetime of baseball knowledge and a wry sense of humor over a hype man any day. Thumbs up for Gibby.

I have actually enjoyed them mixing it up between those two all year. Too much of either is a bit of a challenge, but I think they’re a nice balance off and on. Gibby is hilarious if you’re paying attention.

Gibby is as good as they get.  Personally, I find his approach to the booth incredibly refreshing.  How many more Vitale's or Gus Johnson's do we need?

Absolutely.  His tone is a little dry, but he's more insightful than the vast majority of analysts.  Spare me Rod Allen's blabbering nonsense.

Last night he was talking about a bunch of coaching strategies.  Spoke about how when your team is done hitting - and their team is coming up - you have 2.5 minutes between innings to nail down your strategy for exactly what you will do if the first hitter gets on and what you will do if the second hitter gets on.  Talked through all the things you have to consider and how much more fast paced the game is when you are managing.

He's always insightful like this - I really enjoy him.  Seems like a pretty decent guy too.

I can take Gibby's dull delivery or Rod anyday.... Mario is like fingernails dragging on a chalk board.  I turn the TV sound off and tune in to the radio broadcast.

despite the fact that he played for MSU, shows more energy, initiative, strength and humility in his role as color commentator for the Tigers despite his diagnosis of Parkinson's disease two years ago.

One of the ways this illness affects him is by making the tone of his voice very bland. He still knows baseball and can describe what should be or should have been done very well.

The medications that one has to take for this chronic illness have their side effects and additional meds may be used to control these undesired issues.

Kirk gets nothing but respect and compassion from me.

This all may be true, and he is certainly courageous for carrying on, but I do much prefer Rod Allen because if it's a Gibby game my wife, who would normally sit quietly and thumb through her tablet, makes me change the channel because she can't stand the droning voice.

Why not get a tablet and watch games on that with headphones? That's what I do. We are still in the room together I keep one earbud in and that way if she wants to talk I can mute the game. With today's tech comprises for TV watching is all but a formality

Those clowns know almost nothing about the game. Mario appears to root for the opposing team every broadcast. Rod is too busy chasing Asian baseball players down with his bat to even figure out what the count or inning it is. Dickerson with Gibson is my dream broadcast.

I respectfully disagree. Dickerson has a smooth delivery and the things he adds about the game outside of the Tigers just demonstrate that he follows baseball very closely. If you want to hear the worst play-by-play man in baseball check out Hawk Harrelson of the White Sox. Nothing but a pile of cliches.

I live in Indianapolis, so I get the Cubs and White Sox broadcasts.  When the Tigers play the Sox the FSD broadcast is blacked out even though I stream the games.  Long story short, I used to hate Hawk, now I appreciate him.  He tells a lot of great stories from the old days.  His obvious admiration for Al Kaline is great to hear.

Rod Allen might be the worst baseball announcer on the planet

He always waivers and has never been committed to anything he starts to say

Rod Allen "this is a nice count to streal second,if Jim (Jim Leyland) thinks its a good count"

Rod Allen "a good fast ball should get a strike out here.,only if (fill in the blank) feels like that is the pitch he wants to use,in this spot"

Rod Allen "if manager chooses to do so" is a phrase you will hear Rod Allen say 15-20 per games, its unbearable .

Rod Allen "i really cant give my 2 cents on if he should tag up or not"  ...ummm thats your exact  job discription Rod !!!

Mario or Gibby "Rod do you think (manager) will keep the starter in for another inning ? Rod Allen "if he chooses to do so"

Joey Galloway is the worst sports announcder on the planet, but Rod Allen has to be top 5

Very smart dude but his delivery is a C- at best. Sometimes comes off as a dick too. But then again, so do I.

Mr Grainger

While I agree that Rod has a better delivery than Gibby, his analysis is nothing more than reading statistics, spouting catchphrases and making excuses for the Tigers. Gibby, while certainly subdued, has forgotten more about baseball than Rod Allen ever knew.

If you recall back to Chris Spielman's early days of broadcasting, his voice was much weaker (and higher pitched) than it is today.  Maybe its confidence.  I don't know.  Regardless, Spielman has turned into one of my favorite analysts.  Goes to show that you need to give guys some time to develop and mature into their roles, even in broadcasting.

I understand that Gibson has Parkinson’s but I too find him to be very dull. He seems to go on and on about nothing and tries to be funny and is not. I like rod and Mario. Maybe it’s just because I am used to them but I feel they do a good job together.

but the Tigers finally won it in the bottom of the 12th 3-2 on a leadoff triple by Jones followed by a perfectly-executed drag bunt by Hicks. No matter who is s calling the game, so nice to see a team being managed by a smart baseball Manager who knows how to get the most out of his players. Even though Gardenhire just said in the post-game interview that he didn't call for the bunt there, I can't imagine last year's team under Ausmus winning a game in such fashion.
