OT: Talking Cars Tuesday

Submitted by JeepinBen on

So after my thread last Monday (http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/ot-motorhead-monday ) had fans of a band wishing we were talking a different kind of heavy metal, I thought I'd move this week's thread, change the alliteration and throw out another car topic. Last week I asked about the car that you've most wanted to own that you've seen in person. This week:

Your dream garage. What 4 cars populate it? Why?

You're right. I got exposed to that by the Dodge Stealth. Chrysler and Mitsubishi used to work quite closely back in the day. I think Chrysler owned alot of Mitsubishi at that point. Not sure why I had Nissan in my head.

I got an '94 5 spd NA from my BiL. Holy cow. Its like 128 HP out of a 1.8 liter, but I've not had as much fun in anything. Its crazy. I have more fun  in that going 40 around some curves than I do doing 80 in some other cars.

Sadly, the dog tore  the roof this winter, so I have to try to fix that. :-(

Fun =/= fast, fun can be finding the limit. A friend has a slightly built Miata (roll cage, exhaust, cold air modifications) and I remember that in straights my Jeep would own it, but he'd take turns without braking that would have rolled me.

Also saw a Miata a few months ago with the license plate "BRK L8".

The miata might be an answer to one of my future thread questions...

was a 1999 model.  It had about 140hp and was pretty quick, but not fast.  They did make a turbo model for a while in the mid 00's that were fast, but I'm not sure if they do that anymore.

The great thing about them is that they're simple and very easy to work on and modify.  Performance parts are readily available and not that expensive.  I've been thinking about getting another 99 model and bolting a turbo on to it.

A turbo would be perfect, I think. I see some guys put in bigger motors but I wouldn't want to screw up the balance or the go cart feel. Its not a Cobra.

Sadly, with two kids and my skills, there is no chance of that. ;-)

A friend once told me "Work on whatever you want in the car. Just make sure you save up enough money before hand to completely replace it if you screw it up..."

I probably wouldn't start a project like that until my daughter goes to college at least (few more years).  My son is 3 and when he gets a little older I want to get a project going that we can do together.

Or maybe I'll just buy a boat.  Always wanted a boat.

1.  One of those new Stingrays, middle age requires a Corvette

2.  Monte Carlo from "Training Days"  had one in High School and would love another.

3.  2005 Pontiac GTO  also had one and had to give it up for a family car.

4.  Early BMW 2002

cars I have owned were a full sized Ford truck, and a full sized tiara conversion van so I would want those for day to day stuff.   The final 2 vehicles would be a 1965 yellow Ford Mustang and a 1954 fire engine red MG TF 1500.

Car 1: Some random mini-SUV. Drove around my father in law's CR-V, and it was pretty nice. This would be used for most vacations, road trips, and whenever my wife and I would want to do something active or take our dog anywhere.

Car 2: Cherry red Porsche 911 GT3 RS (or GT2, if they ever release it again). I've always wanted a top-shelf 911, and God willing I will have one before I die. I'd probably drive this to work whenever the weather was nice.

Car 3: A fully rally-built Subaru Impreza WRX STI. I'm talking Subaru Rally Team's Rally America style build. Road legal, and would kill it come winter time (and summer when I can take it on some back country dirt roads).

Car 4: This is a tough one - do I want another ridiculously fast car (either the Ferrari LaFerrari or the Koenigsegg One:1), something classic (a 1969 Camaro SS), or a plush convertible for cruising around on a nice summer day (BMW M6 or Bentley Continental GT)... it's hard to go against my love of appaling speed, but I'd have to take the BMW.

1963 Corvette - Always been my dream car
1981 Buick Grand National - Maybe as a daily driver
1982 Chevy C10 - Always need a truck and my favorite (about the same as the truck on Fall Guy except that was a GMC I think)
2015 Cadillac CTS - For family

With 1 change, I would stay with what we have:

2013 Boss 302 - Race Red:  Nothing but fun

2012 Mercedes ML350:  As practical as you can get and incredibly durable

2014 Prius:  Great to zip around town almost for free

2007 Shelby GT500 Convertible that I would trade for a like new 2003 BMW M5 just to have a really fun car that is pretty practical (as impractical cars go)

1) My 1968 Cougar, which my dad and I restored ourselves - can't let that one go

2) 2009 Ferrari F430 Coupe

3) F-22 Raptor

4) The Enterprise E

Figure I have most of my bases covered there. The starship is obviously my daily driver.

I really like all the modern electronic stuff in today's cars.

So...

1966 Austin Healy Sprite - pure top down sports car

2015 Porsche Boxster - modern sports car

2015 Tesla Model S P85D - sometimes, you need room for 4 and I live in Chicago, so 4 wheel drive is good

2015 Audi Q7 - one has to drive when the snow is flying, have room to haul stuff, and tow my boat

Sorry, I've never been a pickup truck kind of guy.  I know they are better for hauling stuff.

66 Sprite, eh? Do you prefer the body style or the mechanicals over the Mark 1?

Personally, the square-body Sprites don't do much for me. My wife's 59, which has the 1275cc A-series motor and a Datsun 5-speed has plenty of whoop with the iconic original "Bugeye" body. Just my preference, though.

comes with vehicle electronics. To me stuff is too centralized and too expensive. My '98 vehicles have a sensor goes out, the car still runs. Maybe poorly, but it still runs.

Anything after '05 for me and a sensor goes out it might take out the dash, the AWD, the ABS... my brother had a BMW. That thing was famous for popping sensors and having the car go in limp mode. Ugh.

I like the radio to have a line in, but beyond that, I wish we could do without alot of stuff. No sensor should limit my ability to drive home.

Daily Driver - Hummer H1, to run s**t over. And to carry my bicycle.

1964 Ferrari 250 GTO

1963 Split Window

Lamborghini Aventador - Usually not a big Lambo fan, but I saw one of these at Kroger the other day and was floored.

1. 93 RX-7 with a single turbo 20b (3rotor) 2. 94 Toyota Supra TT 6speed. 3. 95 Acura NSX. 4. T-Rex. put a new Raptor in the driveway to add some "utility and practicality".

1) 1969 Pontiac GTO Judge -

2) 1964 Chevy Camaro SS:

3) 2015 Chrysler 300 SRT8 for a daily driver:

4) Split Window Corvette

I've already got a 2015 Jeep and a 90s Chevy 1/2 ton truck, so I'd be set for any winter driving.
