OT: Talking Cars Tuesday

Submitted by JeepinBen on

So after my thread last Monday (http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/ot-motorhead-monday ) had fans of a band wishing we were talking a different kind of heavy metal, I thought I'd move this week's thread, change the alliteration and throw out another car topic. Last week I asked about the car that you've most wanted to own that you've seen in person. This week:

Your dream garage. What 4 cars populate it? Why?

I'm going to take a unique approach to this that is hopefully relatively practical (I could most certainly see someone saying, "I would take 4 classic Ferraris that all bring well north of $5M per car, then sell them all and buy 4 reasonable cars" but that's using one of your wishes to ask for more).  My picks are: (1) a car you can use as a daily driver, (2) a vehicle that will be good on or off road and in incliment weather, (3) modern sports car, (4) classic that would only be used as a Sunday driver - or not much at all

1) Porsche Cayman GTS.

2)  Range Rover (full body).  Elegant, off road beast.

3) BMW i8.  I'll take the uniqueness of the i8 over the newest, fastest Tesla (plus Tesla doesn't have a dealership in my city).

4) Ferrari F40, red.  Because - like... why wouldn't you choose this car?

My personal car is the CTS. I just have always had an affinity for them.

My dream car. The 69 Plymouth Hemi Cuda with the 440 V8. I like the E-Body of the 70, so that would be a close second.

1. My wife's 1959 Austin Healey Spite. Restored for her by her father. Because of the smile it puts on her face and for its pure, non-electronic driving pleasure.

2. My 1987 Fiero GT, which I expect to get back from paint next week. My college graduation gift to myself in 1991, sat under a tarp rotting for 8+ years, now getting close to fully restored. Sentimental value and great fun to drive.

3. Lamborghini Aventador. Because Lamborghini...and V-12.

4. Bugatti Chiron. For days when the Aventador just isn't fast enough, the 1200HP of a Bugatti Veyron Super Sport isn't enough power, and a W-16 seems like the most logical engine geometry to get me where I'm going.

This would evict my 2008 Saturn Sky Redline, which is great fun to drive and a beautiful car, but it's been a bit of a PITA with ongoing little issues, and there's nothing that it does that woudn't be covered by the four cars above.

That seems to come mostly from people who've never owned or driven one.

The story of how the evangelists got it built in the first place is enough to make the car interesting. It's stayed reasonably low in price over the years to be accessible to a lot of people, and parts (with a few notable exceptions- sail panels, GT tail lights, and T-top weather strip) are readily available.

Yes, they launched with an underpowered, aged I-4 (Iron Duke) engine, but were it not for the idle capacity at that engine plant, which effectively made engine free for the P-car platform, it wouldn't have ever been made. And it did get a nice 2.8 liter V-6 in 2005, and the early-90s F-body 3.4 is an easy bolt-on upgrade. GM spent $30,000,000 to upgrade the suspension for the 1988 model, then canceled the car (classic GM move). Most folks who seem to be in the know say that the Corvette camp contributed to its demise; they didn't want any competition.

BMW M3 Sedan for daily driver, fully loaded Range Rover for space and functionality, Audi S7 for long drives/grand tourer, Aston Martin V12 Vantage S Roadster for fun when it's nice out.

Mitsubishi Evolution FQ400 the European version probably in the IX body style even though that was fundamentally the worst car.

Lotus Exige

One of those Super Hi-Lux that they made on Top Gear to get groceries and various tasks. The ones they took over the glacier and to the volcano.

Finally an Aston Martin DB9 to tool around in.

At one time I owned a (used) 2004 Audi RS6. Awesome car, but damned expensive to maintain, so I traded it for a new 2010 Tacoma 4x4. I still drive the Tacoma and love it's utility, but I crave speed...

1. Tesla P85D. It's a spaceship for the road. The instant torque of this beast makes it tough for anyone to beat and it can still seat 5 and carry the golf clubs and groceries.

2. Toyota Tundra load to the gills... It can haul a spaceship, or #3, if needed... Trust me it was on TV.

3. A yacht. I live in St Pete, so it would be nice to go by land and by sea.

4. A large camper for travelling back to Michigan for the summer and fall and hosting tailgates with lots of home brew.

+1 for the Tesla.  I am hoping to get a 70D in the next year or so but obviously the P85D would be the choice if I could justify the increased cost.

Then I would probably want some type of SUV for the crappy weather days and hauling purposes.

Sure I would also take an attention-grabbing exotic car and a really nice convertible if I had two more choices but the first two would cover 99% of my auto wants and needs.

1995 Land Rover Range Rover County LWB - my first car, was handed down to me in 2004 when I got my license, so many problems but when it worked, it was glorious

1)  First generation, late 60's/early 70's 'stang.  I really don't have a preference for a specific model/year in that window... they're all gorgeous.

2)  A kick-ass rock-crawlin' jeep.

3)  New F-150/250 with a long bed, depending on the size of the next item...

4)  A fishing boat.  I live in waaaay up on the northern California coast, so something with a deep V bottom that can handle modest Pacific seas, but small enough to reasonably take to some of the inland reservoirs.

The 1961 Ferrari 250GT California. It is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up.

You should keep the garage locked when you're not driving it though....

1.  For winter.  RAM 2500 Laramie Limited (Mega Cab).  4" lift and ~$5,000 to pump it up to 650 hp or so.

2.  For pimping around town on a Lazy Sunday . . . . 1932 Lincoln KB series.

3.  1970 442 W-30. Gotta have a muscle car since I don't like "super cars."

4.  Every day driver:  BMW Alpina B7

Might have to rotate a 1941 Lincoln Zephyr resto mod.  Chopped top, lowered, 700 HP.

Dodge or Plymouth?

When the band first came out, I saw a kid at our youth group with a Reliant K T-shirt on. I was amazed that they'd made a shirt for that car. Boy, did I feel old and stupid... ;-)
