"Life is hard. Everything's not going to be, as Forrest Gump said, a box of chocolates.  There's always going to be adversity that comes in life, and we're playing a game," Edsall said prior to being informed of the meeting.

Note that this tweet came out before he knew of the players only meeting.

Also, this is new information from the original OP.  Jus' sayin...

not like Hanks in the role.  I am not a FG hater, it is not a bad movie, but Hanks played the role in a very unrelatable way.  The only emotion I felt in the movie involved other characters, Jenny and Dan specifically, because I thought that Penn and Senise hit exactly the right cords.  Gump was never interesting(nor all that endearing) to me even though I think he was intended to be and I guess I am putting it on Hanks over Zemekis and Roth even though the probably all share some of the blame.

a difficult character to portray - someone with mental and social disabilities.  I think it's going to be hard to identify with characters that don't show much emotion because you don't completely understand what they're going through.  Besides, in the movie they largely created their own version of Forrest Gump - compared to the one in the book.  I thought the movie-version was FAR superior to the book.  Anyway, just my take on it.

Like being deathly afraid of flying, but finally overcoming that fear to kiss your kids goodbye and take a trip of a lifetime.  And then having the plane you're on crash.

And then having another plane crash on top of your already-crashed plane.  And having the passengers on the second plane be the same kids you just recently kissed goodbye.

how Edsall mis-understands Forest Gump.

I mean: "There's always going to be adversity in life, and we're playing a game."

This is super confusing. Is he saying that none of this really matters in the larger scheme of things? Is he saying that outcomes of games are certain? Or are outcomes uncertain?

The Md coach is under fire and he is fumbling around for ways to convey what is happening when clearly he has lost hold of the reins.

Um, we're pretty sure that's not what Forrest meant, coach. In fact, the very next line of the quote is, "You never know what you're going to get."

The fact that Edsall misinterpreted that famous movie quote makes the second part of it a little frightening if you're a Maryland fan. Indeed, they probably didn't know what they were going to get when they walked into West Virginia, and I very much doubt that it makes them confident about Saturday. That works for us, but yeah, Edsall is not helping himself out here.

Let's just be happy that if our current coach somehow misunderstood Forrest Gump, it would be due to the fact that he interpreted it as a morality tale about wining and losing, pain and destruction:

"Life is like a box of chocolates. . . It can be a great temptation to rest on the field and let the opponent have a play without making him pay for every inch. I must hold his pain where it is. Mine does not matter."

Harbaugh is epic, even when he misunderstands something (see all pressers).

I love it!

I remembered them as having struggled against teams that they shouldn't have. Must've been mistaken due to the total lack of hype around them to this point. At least, any hype I've seen. They were talked about quite a bit by this time last season iirc.
