OT-Panthers Part Ways With Matt Rhule

BoB has got to be the most overrated NFL coach of the last decade. His idiocy was clear from the jump, he just capitalized on the division turning to shit at just the right time. Better in the NFL than Meyer, sure, but that's true of over 99% of NFL HCs. Don't understand all the people (non Texans fans, all of them) who have now taken a "he was actually pretty good" stance on him now.

holy crap you’re glossing over a lot of BoB’s faults at Houston.

bill o’brien won four division titles in six seasons in the nfl before getting fired after starting the covid season 0-4. he was not a failure as an nfl coach.

If you aren't a 30 year old with a chin strap beard, the NFL isn't interested.

I don't understand Garrett's point here - he's lumping Harbaugh with everyone that failed in the NFL. Does he think Harbaugh failed?
October 10th, 2022 at 12:31 PM ^
Nah, he's saying that odds of success are not good. Only 1 of the 12 coaches listed there had any sort of actual success as a first-time NFL head coach coming from the college ranks.

I think the fact that Harbaugh was the only one with real success may be related to the fact that he also had the longest/best career as an NFL player of anyone on that list.

wonder which one did the worst.

I'm not sure what the lesson there is. It's not like NFL assistants have done that much better. There are going to be a few success stories, most average to mediocre performances, and some complete disasters. I think the one difference might be that the ego of a successful college head coach might be a lot bigger than an NFL assistant and that may lead to some issues like what happened with Urban and Petrino.

Seems like one of those guys who just belongs at the college level. Assuming that’s the route he’ll want to go, he will likely get first choice schools unless Meyer decides to throw his name in the hat again.

20 million to not coach. Ruhle can take his time and find the right college program, he'll get lots of looks.
Nebraska is the obvious big opening right now. If he waits a year, Auburn is likely to be open. Maybe Texas A&M.

Terrific college coach. He'll get a lot of offers and likely do well wherever it is. I kinda hope it's not in the B1G.

I think Rhule is a very good college coach. The transformations at Temple and Baylor speak for themselves. Someone's going to throw a pretty penny at him this week and it'll be a good hire for whoever comes out on top. Rhule's agent is seeing dollar signs right now

Rhule to ASU is my guess. I know a lot of others think that as well. Their AD is also enamored with NFL guys like Herm Edwards and his entire staff of former pro guys. However, if the AD is axed, maybe they look at an up and coming college coach instead like Campbell.
Nebraska would be smart to go after Rhule, but that program is a complete dumpster fire that would be very difficult to win at. I think the Kansas or KSU coach jumps to Nebraska.

I'm not sure ASU has the money. It is going to be hard for a school to beat Big Ten or SEC money if one of those schools want Rhule.
October 10th, 2022 at 1:37 PM ^
Rhule is getting his pick of whatever open college job that he wants. I’m guessing he’ll be at Auburn or Nebraska.
ASU doesn't have the allure or cache that those two have.
October 10th, 2022 at 1:22 PM ^
He’s a good college coach, betting Nebraska already called him.
October 10th, 2022 at 1:29 PM ^
Starting a highly drafted QB that failed at Cleveland is a sure-fire way to get canned. Not entirely his fault, but c’est la vie.

I think Ruhle is a good college football coach.
I wonder if he wants to be a college football coach however. The recruiting grind isn't for everyone, and for some reason, I put Ruhle in that category...so I think that he stays in the NFL - he won't jump back into college unless its a great situation and not a full on rebuild...cough(Nebraska)cough
He's definitely a guy that will get a ton of calls for open college jobs this cycle.

This might be crazy, but if James Franklin were to have a down year this year, would PSU think about moving on to Matt Rhule? Rhule is a PSU alum with significant ties to the football program.

FWIW from my holiday trip back to the Cornhusker State
Seems like many here are convinced that Matt Rhule will be introduced as the new Husker head coach as earliest as Sunday.
