How is naming a team after a group offensive. I'd love the Fighting Koalas! Some are obviously racist like Redskins, but don't teams usually try to be named after something awesome and cool? Seems more like honoring than racism but what do I know.

Hawks is fantastically boring. I can't believe a school with a history so known for their unique nickname and logo would pick one of the most bland mascot names ever. Might as well have gone with Tigers or Bulldogs.

How dare minorities be treated how they want? How dare they decide they don't want their name associated with warfare or schools of states comprosing land that was taken away from them through ignoble means and treatment? There is PC (such as telling women they should wear skirts instead of jeans, or blacks shouldn't date whites, and justifying with "just because.") and there is this PC. While agree sometimes things get pushed a bit far (microaggressions, still trying to figure that one out), some people need to realize those who were voiceless in deciding these names originally are now saying they don't want to be associated with these things. Is it really wrong for people to decide that?

I'm sure America is definitely a weaker country as a result/s

Everyone gets a trophy/s

This country is losing its foundational values/s

My understanding is that this name change was driven by the NCAA and not by the tribes in question.

Ah, the irony. The more our culture mandates that we move away from such offensive sport team names involving American Indians, the less relevant this minority group becomes. Having the team names causes learning about the id identified Indian tribes. Now, we'll just go back to knowing nothing about these groups...which will lead to a lack of awareness about their history....which will lead to fear from majority groups because when the Indian groups are encountered "they are different than us"......which will lead to increased ethnic and racial discrimination. Great idea to eliminate team names due to the sensitive nature of 1 tribe member!

Well, yes. It is partly to be remembered so that the majority never does it again. But that viewpoint only considers the benefits to the majority. It should also be remembered to honor the victims, or at least to not add insult (forgetting it or pretending it didn't happen) to injury (genocide). There's also its value as a guilt trip, which is similar to the first point but more as retribution than rehabilitation. But I didn't try to draw an equivalency, so that isn't the point. The point is that the claim that tribes should be happy to be used as mascots ("relevance!") by the people who killed them en masse, displaced them from their land, and continues to marginalize them is absolutely insane.

People need to stop getting so butthurt and grow a backbone. I still wish EMU would change back to the Hurons instead of being the Eagles.

I don't care either way. 0 fucks given.

You know what is a bigger pussification of America? People making a big fucking deal out of dumb shit like this, like it really matters or helps society. Everyone gotta find something to get offended about.

Name a team The Fighting Cracka Ass Whitey Walkin Like He's Got A Stick Up His Ass Smelling Like A Wet Dog Who Can't Jump or Dance.

I wouldn't care. Probably buy some fan gear. The logo would be nuts. Probably better than this highlighter yellow Adidas bullshit.

Point taken, but I disagree with your suggestion that because I was born white (majority culture, I have no idea what that means) means my views magically carry less weight than the black woman you mentioned. In fact, it makes no sense to me whatsoever.

But the point of my post wasn't "what is vs isn't offensive" to people or what is "more racist" or "of course this racist thing about the majority doesn't bother me, I am somehow immune since I am part of the majority."

The point was I don't care what teams want to call themselves. Or music bands. Or companies. If I managed to get offended, I still wouldn't care. People act like there should be some legal recourse when you get offended. My view is if something is offensive, you can choose to ignore it and walk away thinking "whatever dude."

I didn't mean to suggest that your opinion is more or less valued or valid than the hypothetical one I suggested. I meant that it doesn't really illuminate the current discussion. You are able to tolerate racist comments about your own culture: that's laudable. But it's not the same as (possibly) racist depictions of a clearly marginalized culture. As a fellow member of the majority culture (I swear I didn't make that term up) I feel pretty confident in saying that it is a different experience absorbing racist remarks since I myself have rarely been marginalized.

but can you explain what exactly's wrong with "political correctness"?  Bonus points if you can explain how the common courtesy of not using a peoples' name in a way they find offensive is now a "political" thing.  Extra bonus points if you explain how the country is "ruined" by using others' names respectfully.

I've spent a lot of time on the Pine Ridge Lakota (Sioux) Reservation, and the name of a football team is the least of their troubles.   These people are dying of alcohol, drugs, diabetes, cancer, teen suicide, etc etc, and living in near 3rd world poverty.  It is shocking that this poverty and despair exists in this country.   Take a look:

Why don't you say what you want to? Don't be a mealy-mouthed coward. Grow a pair. You're not PC like us sissies, you can say what you want. How about them Jews? Always offended about that "holocaust", amirite? How bad could it have been when there are still so many of them out here being "offended"? All of your times must be confusing.
