OT- NHL Trade Deadline Day
Open thread re: Deadline Day. Lots of moving parts yesterday...Yandle to NYR, Cole to DET, Coburn to TBL, and this morning Petry (prospective Wings D-man target) to MTL.
So, what are some other moves that could go down? For Wings fans, will Holland go after Phaneuf? For Toronto, is the fire sale over? For Chicago, will Sharp be moved, will they find a replacement for Kane's injury? Any rumors or trades you'd like to see happen?
Then again it might be kinda anticlimactic as the big moves (Evander Kane, Clarkson, Jagr) are already done. But who cares, TSN and Sportsnet will both be covering it like fiends while we take it a little easier down here in the States.
You would think...but it's actually been 102. My how time flies.

Wiz doesn't want to be traded, so he gave CBJ a trade list of teams who either don't need him or don't have the cap.
Wisniewski traded to Anaheim, guess he just wanted to play in warmer weather.
Funny enough it seems like he likes Columbus a lot. He's got a unique list of teams he'd like to be traded to. Can't imagine the Wings are on it.
Edit: damn beaten to the punch but hey, I've got a link.
Anyone who knew the guy from his days in Canton will tell you that he's a major Dbag and not someone we want on the Wings.
If Wings don't land Phaneuf, they'll try to acquire right-shooting Marek Zidlicky from New Jersey.

Getting indications Leafs are still asking too much from Detroit for Dion Phaneuf. Chances of deal today are diminishing.

At 38 years old , he isnt going to be around long. Looks like some young Wings defensemen will be toiling at Grand Rapids a bit longer.
That's fine. Sproul needs to be down there, Ouellet or Marchenko would be nice to keep up but it isn't end of the world if they aren't. Their time is next year.
Decent rental. He actually had 12 goals last year on a much higher S%. Should be a help to the PP. Plus he's the elusive RH shot.
Zidlicky comfirmed to the Wings for a third rounder.

Like the deal personally
This seems pretty cheap for a guy that, while older, is still good. If he works out, he’s not likely to cost much to play another year or two. I like what Holland has done, we gave up essentially nothing and made the team better.
for basically a 2nd and 3rd? I take back all the bad things I said about Holland over the summer when we resigned Cleary and Quincey.
I don't.... Quincey was one thing but Cleary was still some bullshit.
I still think he was told he'd get two years when he came back and this is Holland honoring his word. He's not really taking playing time from anyone.
Dumb promise by Holland to begin with, and his 10 game bonues was a million bucks.
It's not your money to spend and it's not like the wings need that cap space this year. If anything it just takes up a roster spot for a young guy that could be playing in GR every night. I assume he'll transition into the front office next year. Wings have done that for years now (Yzerman, Maltby, Draper, Osgood, etc.).
Ok, obviously not... but every million they do spend on a guy who plays 11 games a season is money they could have used to make a run at a UFA in the offseason (I'd love to have gotten Ehrhoff, Niskanen etc).
I'm not mad at Cleary, good for him getting the money. Aside from loyalty and if Holland/Babcock really thought Cleary's off-ice qualities are that worthwhile, there's no reason to pay him what they did, so in that sense it's absolutely a bad move by management.
said Detroit wasn't even on his list
Reports are showing that the Wings just traded a conditional 3rd round pick in 2016 for Marek Zidlicky. This most likely stops any fear of Phaneuf coming to Detroit. Good move all around as Zidlicky is strong on the power play.
I look at these trades as helping make the team deeper. Yes some players will lose playing time . But come playoff time those players will be hungry if called on due to injury.
Cole and Zidlicky are solid and will hopefully give the Wings slightly more offensive punch. But man, do I miss the days of a Chris Chelios or a Robert Lang being under the tree on trade deadline day. Although I guess this is like an Ulf Samuelsson or Dmitri Mironov, not bad, just an obvious rental.
No, he did not play to his size, but he showed some hands around the net occasionally. It was definitely a move I was more excited about when it happened as opposed to down the road, but that's what I was referring to anyway.
His goal in the final minute against the Sharks(2007 playoffs). It completely turned that series around, instead of being down 3-1 it was tied 2-2 and Wings went on to win 4-2.
Looking back I thought we got what we should have expected when we picked up Lang.
When he came to Detroit everyone though that because of his size he was Shanahan 2.0 but that wasn't really his game.
He was a solid 20 goal scorer but really only had 1 good season when he was chasing a Jagr in his prime around the rink.
I dont know how many people are watching The NHL Network . The coverage is awesome . So many old hockey stories . All sorts of former players and former executives . If you like hockey and know the game and the old players. Its really cool .
Two decent additions for the push for and during the playoffs. Inexpensive and should fill needed roles. I likey!
Their rebuild started 3 years ago. They dropped everyone they had on the roster for picks and just started putting players away. Textbook rebuild that teams should follow more often.
They easily have the #1 prospect system in the NHL. No holes or weaknesses at any position.
