40+ sacks last season. Worst in the league and Stafford was tough and mobile. Goff, not so much. Oline was very important second only to the entire defense
Lions pick was......actually smart.
Great pick..DAndreSwift is going to be happy.
Don’t look now, but if the lions can upgrade one guard spot it’s a top 5 unit. That’s at least a building block.
Exactly. This is what you do. Get one excellent position group and build out from there. They did this with the DL with Suh and Fairley, and it got them 2 playoff berths (2011 and 2014) and the #2 defense in 2014.
Yes, it was. I would rather have seen them trade down for some additional picks, assuming they got some good trade offers, but maybe the thoughts across the league are that neither Jones not Fields impressed enough to move up to #7.
Relieved, anyway, to see the Loins didn't take Fields. Or a placekicker to replace Prater.
Fields is an elite talent at the most important position on the field. He needs more seasoning, but I think he is more talented than anyone coming in the next two drafts.
Fields should have been the pick.
He's not a better NFL prospect than the kid from North Carolina.

Look at every scouting report. They all say the last place the Lions dneeded to spend a high pick on was OL — because they already have young talent there. You don’t just build up one position group at the expense of all the others. That’s outdated thinking — the best teams don’t draft this way. Detroit literally has no defensive talent. Could have traded back and had Parsons or 2 solid corners.

They were never taking a guy like Parsons.
Good pick by the Lions
I'm shocked
Not a sexy pick, but it was what we need! Actually a good pick by the lions! Wow!
That's some great value for the Lions.
As a Bengals fan I wanted him over Chase.
Agree. Bengals better figure out a way to start protecting Burrow

Mayfield in the 2nd
Gotta love the Carolina fans reaction to their pick:
"Who? Well....okay, I guess"
That’s a head-scratcher to me. I guess they figure McCaffrey can handle the rock 30x a game and stay healthy with not much else on that offense.
I think they took all defense last year too? Holy moly.
Lions get an A+
This is about to heat up. Im saying three trades in the next five picks
Great pick by the Lions! Be elite at something. The OL is already pretty good and it’s young. This is the one unit the Lions have that can become elite soon. An elite young OL is a nice thing to build around - and it’s the position group with the best chance for a long career together.
You win with QB play, not elite OL play as NE has shown us. Doesn’t appear that any elite QBs are coming down the pike against anytime soon.
Astonishingly bad pick considering who was there and what they needed.
Who's there?
Who's the last great Urban Meyer NFL QB?
How much did Trubisky cost Chicago? Not money, but in time and effort to find out he isn't a viable NFL QB. They wasted a great defense with bad QB play.
Picking a QB who doesn't help your ballclub isn't an answer.
An elite QB would be a better pick. An elite QB was not available.
So you’d pay Goff $51.7 million the next two years to hold a clipboard? I hope you never get a GM job.
Perhaps you should have watched the Super Bowl.
Tampa didn’t win because of elite QB play.
April 29th, 2021 at 10:10 PM ^
Tampa Bay doesn’t even make it to the Super Bowl without an elite quarterback.
April 29th, 2021 at 10:11 PM ^
Tampa won on the line of scrimmage.
April 29th, 2021 at 10:16 PM ^
Also KC lost because Mahomes was running for his life on every play.
April 29th, 2021 at 10:25 PM ^
Tampa needed a QB who didn't throw the ball to the other team first and foremost. They had all the other parts to make a serious playoff run. Brady bought them roughly an extra possession and a half a game and in a razor thin league like the NFL that is an enormous advantage.

...but Tampa Bay did make it to the Super Bowl without an elite quarterback.
April 29th, 2021 at 10:35 PM ^
"Astonishingly bad" he says lol
1) that's a knob take
2) Im assuming you've never seen the lions draft?
April 30th, 2021 at 11:04 AM ^
Tampa's O-Line was the best in the league last year and the Pats regularly had fantastic O-Line play throughout Brady's career. When the Rams made the Super Bowl a couple years ago they had one of the best O-Line's in the league too. When the Giants beat the Pats twice they had fantastic O-Line play each time. You couldn't be more wrong.
Excellent pick. Take defense for the next x picks, where x is greater than 3, unless there's a solid OG around, then take him and then defense forever.
Receiver(s) in FA and you have a decent offense with a good run game. Defense should start to improve with a few good picks.
April 30th, 2021 at 11:08 AM ^
I like that idea but what are the good WRs left in FA? I'd rather spend one of the 2 3rd round picks the Lions have on a receiver. Maybe Nico will be available?
when do the lions pick?
Just then....
Go to ludicrous speed and maybe you can catch it.
Were they really playing the uncensored version of Cee Lo Green's "Fuck You" over the speakers at the draft?
Yeah, I am fine with the Lions pick at #7.
I feel like it has been a while since I could say something like that.
Lions have been so bad for so long that I know very little about them. Stafford and Megatron and that Jim Schwartz defense with Suh were squandered. Hit percentage on Oline is much higher than with qbs. You just need 5 of them.
GREAT PICK
My Bears trade up! Don't screw this up, AGAIN!
Here come Da Bears!
The place where QB's go to die. Fuck!
Awesome! Just shared this with all of my friends who are Bears fans.
Well, the Bears are now shot to hell for the next 3-4 years.
It’s rarely a mistake when you can get the best O-Lineman in the draft.
Goff is a competent QB. He needs some. weapons. But how long has it been since the Lions could run the ball?
Considering they aren’t going to win anything this year, smart to build the line towards a better future.
April 29th, 2021 at 10:14 PM ^
WR is deep this year. The Lions can get a good starter there later. Golladay was 3rd rounder.
Having one of the best young O-lines for years is something to build around. DAndre Smith is going to flourish.
The Lions new regime needed a sure win. They got it.
