OT: Ndamukong Suh the next Reggie White?

http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Is-Ndamukong-Suh-the-next-Reggie-White.html#add_comment

The National Football Post looks at the comparison that many have already made between Reggie White, and "The Boy Named Suh". A lot of in roads between the two are clear, and Suh possesses the skill and aggression that made Reggie White a hall of famer. Like with all other comparisons, especially with a hall of famer involved, there are going to be disagreements. Either way, I think this is a good situation for the Lions, to have a player who creates this much positive buzz.

I did, however, find a lot of humor a response to the article from a reader.

"Sunday he got handled by the Bucs' Davin Joseph. Two tackles, no sacks, no QB pressures, no splash plays whatsoever. Nada. Zilch. He's not worthy to even carry Reggie White's jock strap at this point. Maybe in a few years. Maybe."

I'm not certain what game he was watching, but this was funny to me. Suh created consistent pressure on the Quarterback, drew constant double and some times triple teams. Infact, Tampa ran most of their run formations, and Quarterback movements away from Suh.

Forgive me, I'm rambling.....

Too early to make such a lofty comparison. However, it should be noted that it is significantly easier to get sacks from the DE position than it is at the DT position. That's what makes Suh's rookie season so magical.

I've decided to lay off the food for a while, and go on the booze.

The amount of ignorant statements you get about Suh. There's not another defender in all of professional football I'd rather have than Suh. That includes Revis, Peppers, Polamalu, you name it.

If defenses scheme around Suh, that's fine with me. The Lions' depth on the DL is staggering and they don't even have their 1st round draft pick right now.

And in response to the reader's comment - Suh didn't play nearly as much as he would in a normal game. Lions were rotating DL throughout the whole game because of the humidity. I expect Suh to have a big game against the Chiefs.

You can run away from the dominant DE or expose them by running at them.  You cannot run away from DT's especially when you have a 2nd one you have to account for which is what the Lions have now.  DT's impact every play unless you want to run middle screen every down.

I grew up in Wiscy and spent many teenage Sundays watching the golden age of Reggie, Brett, and Holmgren. Now that I live out in Michigan I've had a chance to see Suh quite a bit, too. I'm not going to be writing UFRs any time soon, but I've seen enough to know Suh has a long way to go to be compared to Reggie.

Don't get me wrong, even as a Packers fan I think Suh is awesome and I'm genuinely happy for the Lions fans who are seeing the light at the end of the Millen Tunnel (which is kinda like that tunnel in Willie Wonka, only with less candy and more depression and hangovers). I will grant some similarities:

-Strength: I'm not talking bench press or quantifiable numbers, obviously. I'm talking human wreckage on the field. Leverage, power, whatever it is, both Suh and White have a major strength advantage over their peers, and the way bodies go flying when Suh is around reminds me of ol' number 92.

-Hope: Stafford, Schwartz, and Suh all arriving at the same time reminded me a lot of the aforementioned Packers trio who turned the franchise around in the 90s. Now it remains to be seen if Mayhew can match Ron Wolf, but Suh has clearly energized the franchise the way Reggie did when he shocked the football world by signing with Green Bay as the biggest free agent in NFL history up to that time.

-Gameplan: Suh is going to draw doubles on every play for the rest of his career. Sacks may be easier to get as a DE, but Reggie was constantly doubled, tripled, chipped, and chopped. Look forward to watching Suh deal with that every game for a decade. He'll make everybody look better just like White did.

All that said, some things Reggie did were beyond anything I've seen Suh or anybody this side of Lawrence Taylor do. He would end games on defense singlehandedly. Multiple sacks on a game deciding drive, coming off the field on 4th and 26 to chants of "Reggie! Reggie!" What he did to Bledsoe in crunch time of the Super Bowl was nothing new. How many defensive linemen have signature move? Reggie's "club" move sent tackles sailing through the air like they were scatbacks. It was never a matter of "if" Reggie made a big play, only "when."

Everything I saw was in the second half of White's career. My mind cannot even comprehend the force of nature he was in the USFL and early on with the Eagles. If Suh can start taking games over in the 4th quarter consistently and changing games season after season, then I can live with a comparison. He's exciting and fun to watch. I could stare at a GIF of his hit on Cutler for hours. There's no doubt Suh's already great, but he has a long, long way to go to be mentioned with the greatest D lineman who ever lived.

Id imagine most teams in the nfl will build the front of their offensive gameplan around Suh. Most teams will tend to shift pass protection to the left, because that's usually where the qbs blindside and the defenses best pash rusher end up. They can't do that with Suh, because the center absolutely has to help the right guard. There are some very good guards, Joseph is probably one, who can block Suh 1 on 1 for a few plays, but its impossible to do on a consistent basis.

That means 1 on 1 matchups for Avril against a tackle and the other Dt, who will soon be Nick Fairley (maniacal laughter goes here). That also means no second level blocking, so Tulloch, Levy, and Durant can read without having to worry about shedding pesky blockers most of the time.

Really, Suh is the keystone of the defense, his unique abilities at his position improve every player around him. He's a big part of why the Tampa offense, which has some decent talent, only scored 1 touchdown and a couple field goals.

TL:DR I say a bunch of stuff many of you already know because god damn am I excited about this Lions team
