And that'll do it. UVA just cannot score. Against a team much smaller than them. In foul trouble.
Clearly off the rim, but Izzo will bitch enough to get a make-up call that isn't warranted because he's a douche like that.

Wow Virginia is terrible. 1-13 from three and 29% overall.
They only played Duke, UNC, and ND once each in the regular season due to a very favorable unbalanced schedule.

1-13 from 3. That's honestly pathetic.
Somebody answer this for; why has getting to the rim NOT been the offense for UVA? They've gotten a layup or a foul every time.
Bennett is a horrible offensive coach. Always has been.
That's all I could think of but it doesn't take much to say 'hey guys, they're in foul trouble and you can get to the basket whenever you want. So do that'. I mean, FFS, Brogdon had Nairn on him and Anderson had Forbes on him. Why are you NOT taking advantage of that?
This isn't one of his better teams and they got it done. Sparty played a great game, Virginia was never comfortable playing, and State kept them at distance the whole game. Say what you want about the refs but there were plenty of calls against the Spartans; 19 to 18 actually.
They do every single year. Mark Hollis is on the selection committee.
MSU was under-seeded and got the purported No. 1 two-seed in the second round. That doesn't make it an easy draw. Virginia shooting like crap might be fortuitous. As whiney as Izzo can be, there are times he deserves some of the credit he gets. At the beginning of the year, many on this Board were certain the Spartans wouldn't even make the tourney.
Arizona is clearly better than both Virginia and Villanova. Louisville is by far the worst 4 seed.
I'm just surprised you didn't use this opportunity to opine yet again how over-rated MSU was in football--along with National Champion OSU IYHO. Kinda one-note.
Please. Their first two opponents both had major injuries, the one-seed is a perennial tourney choker, and now all that stands between them and a Final Four is a 10-loss Oklahoma and the winner of NC State-Louisville. It's hilarious and it happens every year.
Michigan's draw as a 4-seed in 2013 was far more difficult.
No. Iowa is very good, and actually, that NC State team would be a horrible matchup for Sparty.

Wow I just looked at the bracket and there's nobody good left in that region. The selection committee definitely threw Izzo a bone trying to get him back to the final four.

I think either NC State or Louisville could beat them. NC State are big, athletic AND can shoot. Louisville are huge, incredibly athletic but not as good a shooting team (though better than UVA).
Well now we know why they're changing the shotclock to 30 seconds... Teams like Virginia make college basketball embarrassing to watch.
Thanks a lot UVa, you destroyed my bracket and you lost to MSU of all people. Fuck you.

Whoever wins this region will get hammered by Duke/Gonzaga/Utah. Committee did a really awful job with this region. Its a complete joke.
Can't wait for Trice and Dawson to graduate.
According to ESPN, Izzo is in a three-way tie for most NCAA tournament victories as a lower seed. Izzo, Rollie Massimino, and Lute Olsen all have 11.
In 18 trips to the tournament, he's lost to a lower seed 5 times out of 38 opportunities for an 87% win percentage. The most recent of which ended up winning the championship.
His average seed in the tournament is 5. The historical win percentage for that seed is 52.6%. At an overall winning percentage in the tournament of 73.3%, I'd say he's exceeding his seed expectation rather handily.
Hate him all you want, but trying to impune his tournament track record is a fool's errand.
Uhm, i'm not sure where you get your statistical information, but that could not be farther from the truth. of all coaches with his length of tenure Izzo has the top PASE (performance against seed expectation) in all of CBB. IIRC, Brad Stevens' percentage was slightly better, but only after 4 or 5 years. Izzo is above K, Roy, Self, etc. He's taken two 5 seeds to the final four for god's sake.
It's also worth noting that Beilein is right up there with him, just with a smaller sample. But they are both among the top ten tourney coaches in basketball. Just because you don't like them doesn't mean you need to make shit up.
Oh how I loathe them.

Can Oklahoma, Dayton, NC State, or Northern Iowa beat them? doubtful although they did lose to Minnesota so anything is possible.
Hey, my improper use of transitive property says no matter what, MSU should lose their next game: Dayton beat Providence, Providence beat ND, ND beat MSU. Ergo, the winner of Oklahoma vs. Dayton > MSU.
Sparty is about to go from being underrated to being overrated.
That was a good matchup for them.
They have some pieces and Izzo has done a great job building guys into their roles, but they're still not that talented a team.
After getting over my total depression that UVA just did that horseshit, I started to get a sneaking suspicion that they may be about to regress to their mean.
They hit a lot of big shots, UVA missed almost all their big shots, and they always welcome a pitched battle.
Don't sleep on the opposition they face next.
