OT: A most conflicted night

Submitted by Blazefire on

I just had the most terribly confusing night.

I attended a Toledo Walleye ECHL game against the Elmyra Jackals. Toledo was down 6-1 at the end of the FIRST, and had (obviously) pulled their starting goalie after he gave up four in under 8 minutes (on 6 SOG), but the backup wasn't looking tremendously better.

Then, between the second and third periods, I had to endure highlights of OSU's football season being played on the big screen while Dane frigging Sanzenbacher was presented, on ice, with a personalized Walleye jersey. I thought I might vomit.

However, the Walleye went totally apeshit during the second half of the 2nd period and the third period, resulting in an 8-7 win and the most incredible, ridiculous game of hockey I've ever attended. Between the first period and Dane "Toledo's Favorite Son" Sanzenbacher, it was one of the worst events I've ever been at. Because of the craziness and the win, it was one of the best.

And to top it all off, I had a very large beer, but I paid $7.50 for it. SO confused! Was it a good night or a terrible one?

I would chalk it up to a good night.  You're in the state of Ohio so seeing that OSU crap and jersey presentation are part of the risks of sporting events there.

The large beer for $7.50?  Wow, how much were the tix?  Next time sneak in some cheap Bourbon.  You'll feel a lot better in the end.

I have Cleveland Cavs season tickets (yes I know....thanks Lebron) and at EVERY home game for the past decade whenever they want the fans to boo they put the block M up on the jumbotron.  And in the fourth quarter they play Hang on Sloopy and have a Jim Tressel video up to lead everyone in a rousing chorus of OH - IO.

At which time I always take the time to look around my seats, smile, and say loudly enough that at least a few rows can hear me "Damn....these guys from Oho are sure mighty fine spellers.  I wonder how they'd do on longer words though."  Everybody frowns.

At one time, the whole TOledo area was a swampy mess known as the Black Swamp. somebody high up in the planning decided to embrace that heritage, and we have the follwoing teams:

and, before the AFL went belly up, we were GOING to have:

For reference, a mud hen is, evidently, a type of bird that was common in the Toledo swamps at that time. And they're supposedly still trying to find a leauge and a way to get the Bullfrogs up and running.

My most epic adventures/conquests always seem to include moments that are fraught with (what seemed like at the time to be) either sheer terror or extremely uncomfortable situations.

Funny to see the polar opposite happen in such a short timeframe. I say anytime a hockey game ends 8-7, it was probably on the good side of things.

The Plymouth Whalers games at Compuware have $1.50 20 oz. brews for those interested. AMAZING.

Arenas farm out concessions to compaines who charge whatever supply and demand dictates.  It's even worse down here; large beers are anywhere from $9 to $11.  The main problem is that they are lined up as long as they want to stay open at those prices, so they have no motivation to lower them.

It would be funny to see a beer/concession boycott over prices, but I can't imagine enough people participating to make it work.  Having a few in the parking lot and sneaking in those shots they sell in small plastic bag-like containers can at least reduce the number of those expensive beers, though.

How its it? Haven't had time to take in a game when I've been home like I've been hoping to. I've driven past it a couple times tho and it looks impressive.

It's not huge, so there are no bad seats, and the amenities aren't bad at all. Only problem is, the rows are kind of close together, so if you've got really long legs, like I do, it's a bit like being in the back seat of a compact car.

The other problem is that they demolished the Golden Lily restaraunt when they built it, so I can't get lemon chicken anymore.

What a great game. Was that the same LLewellyn(however the fuck you spell that) from UM playing for Elmira?

Hunnington is a great venue, makes one forget all about the old riverdome.

Llewellyn goes to Elmira in the ECHL

BY: MICHAEL FLOREK

After getting kicked off the Michigan hockey team earlier this week for "violating team expectations", senior defenseman Tristin Llewellyn has left the University to play for the Elmira Jackals of the ECHL. The Jackals are an affiliate of Anaheim and Ottawa in the NHL.

Llewellyn spoke with The Michigan Daily Friday night and confirmed that he was headed for Elmira.

"I'm actually on the drive right now," Llewellyn said. "I'll meet with the team tomorrow and play tomorrow night."

The Ann Arbor native was in his final semester at Michigan and stated that he will graduate by taking classes in both the spring and summer semesters.

So why Elmira?

"They gave me an opportunity," Llewellyn said.

Llewellyn played in 126 games as a Wolverine, registering three goals, fifteen assists and 213 penalty minutes. He played in 18 of Michigan's 23 games this season.

The Jackals are seventh in their conference and add Llewellyn as they prepare for a run at the playoffs.

Why do people use this board like a frickin diary?  I come here to read about Michigan sports and happenings, not about little girls' lives.  Sorry to be a dick...but not real sorry.

A world without personal stories on MGoBlog is a world without the CRex saga, and that is not a world I want to be in.

Lighten up, dude. It's the off-season (for football) and also winter. People are stuck inside on their computers, and some people have interesting or funny experiences that they would like to share with the world. I appreciate them when they're worthwhile, and I think this one was good enough.

That attending a sporting event in Ohio might lead to some recognition of an Ohio State football player, especially one of their better players, one who contributed a great deal to yet another Big ten championship, beating Michigan, and winning a BCS bowl?

The NERVE of those fuckers
