OT: Matt Gutierrez signs w/ Bears
Former backup to Robo-Henne still floating around in the NFL.
I still remember thinking, "Wait, who? Oh no," when Henne ran out onto the field for the first game, and then shouting, "THE NEXT FOUR YEARS ARE GOING TO BE AWESOME!" by the end of the game to all my Sparty family.

Might be the best Wolverine QB who never was.

great QB...and I'm I recalling correctly that he caught a TD pass vs Sparty before? or am I thinking of someone else?
January 19th, 2011 at 1:32 PM ^
You are thinking of Jermaine Gonzales.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:08 PM ^
yes....I knew it started with a G and was of some type of Spanish descent.....thank you for clearing that up

He's the next Matt Cassel.

Hes not

I wish he were; maybe if he'd stayed in NE a little longer.

Backup of Robo-Henne?
Maybe for one year, because he was hurt. He left the program after that season, I believe....
January 19th, 2011 at 1:36 PM ^
He left after Henne's sophmore year, I remember being at the 2005 ND game wanting them to put Guiterrez in because Henne couldn't hit a receiver to save his life.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:41 PM ^
It was just for one year because the whole year was backing up Henne.
I wasn't saying he was a career backup to Henne or anything, I just meant that he was going to be the starter until Henne played one down (thanks to that shoulder injury) and it was never going to change back.

The Bears love their talented but washed up former Michigan QB's. We love you Collins, despite your interceptions.
January 19th, 2011 at 7:17 PM ^
Todd Collins is on a personal unbeaten streak dating back to 1997.The guy knows how to win.

Poor Mr. Pipp. I also remember seeing Henne running out and thinking OH CRAP! I was also particularly mad because I went to high school with Clayton Richard, the redshirt freshman other QB who now pitches for the Padres, and I really wanted Clayton to go in.

i remember being in the student section and there was a collective "OH.... FUUUUUCK" when Gutierrez wasn't taking snaps. then word made through the stands that it was Henne who was starting due to a leg injury and everybody crapped their pants. i genuinely cannot remember a more significant moment of collective panic in Michigan stadium during my time as a student there. and then everybody slapped hands and wooped for 4 years.
as your bro, i will take all accolades relating to my tale's coolness.

I remember saying to my seating group that we must really be in it if Lloyd was going to start a freshman QB that we really hadn't heard of. Fortuantely for us, Braylon was around to help the young lad out many a time that year, such as the MSU game (Will always be referred to as the Braylon Edwards Show to me).

Don't forget about Henson. He showed some gusto on the field before letting the MLB pluck him away...I always wonder what if he would have stayed....

Juan Gonzalez, Detroit Tiger outfielder, vetoed a trade that would have sent him to the Yankees and brought Henson to the Detroit Tigers. Had he accepted that trade, you can rest assured that the Tigers would not have made Hesnon a huge offer to sign and he would have played his senior season at Michigan.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:11 PM ^
Like I really need another reason to hate Juan Gonzalez?
January 19th, 2011 at 3:26 PM ^
Why would anyone veto a trade from the Tigers to the Yankees in the early 2000s? He must have hated winning
January 20th, 2011 at 10:31 AM ^
Just did not want the pressure of a pennant race and playing in New York for the Yankees.....
January 19th, 2011 at 2:05 PM ^
It was a shoulder injury

No Penn State was recruiting him hard and Morelli, seeing as they were both from Pa. Henne chose Michigan because he said we were quaterback U and Penn State wasnt. Morelli was actually number 1 and Henne 2 and we all know how that turned out.

That Carr, a traditional guy in every sense of the word never went back to the elder Gutierrez at any point, especially given Henne's ups and downs. I lived in San Francisco for a couple of years and I worked with some guys whose kids went to school with Gutierrez at De LaSalle and they said he was the truth.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:12 PM ^
Wow Ill never forget that game. I grew up an hour from where Henne went to school and my brother dated the sister of one of Henne's receivers in HS. When he commited to Michigan I started going all over Pa to watch him play. When I put on the 1st game expecting to see Gutierrez and then Henne my brother and I went nuts. The 1st game I went to go see him in play in when he was HS he threw a pick six and needless to say I wasnt to excited, but thought he was definitely redshirting anyway.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:48 PM ^
i was real excited about David Underwood going into that season as well.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:03 PM ^
Wow forgot about him good call. I was also really high on Kelvin Grady after how well he played in back up to Mike Hart in 06-07.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:20 PM ^
I think you meant Kevin Grady. Kevin was the running back, 5-star recruit out of high school. Kelvin is the basketball player-turned slot reciever (#19). Early on, Kevin showed a lot of potential, but then the DUI pretty much hurt any chance of him seeing the field. Rod let him come back in pretty much a fullback capacity. He put on a ton of weight, and, all things considered, wasn't "terrible" at the position. But for all intents and purposes, there looked to be a lot there in the carries he got here and there when he was giving Mike Hart a breather.

Thank you you're right I alwasy get their names confused. Yeah it was definitely sad cause I thought he was going to be really good. He was gigantic when he was a senior though.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:31 PM ^
He was a large sarge. He was 216 as a tailback his sophomore year (2006). His senior year (2009), he registered at 232. Also remember, he tore his ACL before the '07 season and didn't play at all that year. Sometimes those guys never fully recover from those types of injuries. Vlad Emilien is a good example. It hindered him to the point where he wasn't going to see the field, hence the transfer. Hopefully, the same won't be the case for Fitz Toussaint. From everything I've heard, the kid is a beast. He just needs get healthy.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:23 PM ^
Err...Kevin?
January 19th, 2011 at 3:38 PM ^
that guy is going to be great......
January 19th, 2011 at 3:46 PM ^
Good to hear that he is still throwing it around in the pros. My cousin went to school with him and his brother at De La Salle HS (the 151 game winning streak school of legend that gave us Amani Toomer). A great guy from what I hear, FWIW.
