OT: Malik McDowell Arrested in Florida

Submitted by mGrowOld on January 18th, 2022 at 10:45 AM

We interrupt today's Harbaugh-watch with some sad news.  In what will almost almost assuredly bring an end to a once promising comeback story, Malik McDowell was arrested Monday in Florida for public exposure and beating a deputy.  McDowell started all 16 games for the Browns this year recording 3 sacks and generally performing well on the interior defensive line.  The Browns were expected to offer McDowell a new contract but clearly that won't be happening now as he is still on probation in Michigan so he's now looking at some serious jail time.

You may now return to your regulary scheduled "will he or won't he" Harbaugh debate.

The police report indicates that the incident began after a call was received that a man was walking naked near a school.

So he'll go from being on an NFL roster to being listed on the sex offender registry.

A Florida man got caught red-handed by Walmart security guards when he tried to leave the store with unpaid items. The charges for his crime? Nearly $1,000 dollars worth!

When confronted about it all Bradley D. Young said “I have 24 cents of Koolaid in my pocket and I just wanted a drink” as an excuse for why he had batteries, scooters, navigation systems and other expensive merchandise hidden from view under clothes piled up on top of them…

Haha mine is "Florida man faces charges for eating pancakes in middle of the road."

My wife's is "Florida man ends police standoff for a slice of pizza" which makes me wonder if the police were in a standoff to see who would get the last slice of pizza, or did the man end his standoff with police after they offered him some pizza? Lol, the article says the latter, but I choose the former. Much funnier that way. And, phrasing...

Tampa Florida:

"Local resident, Stephen Titland, aged 49, tried to break into and steal a car that was occupied by several members of the Sheriff's Strategic Targeted Area Response Team."

----------------

He was, uh, apparently not successful in his attempt to steal the car. You cannot make stuff up better than this ...

Just a sad story - the kid could have done such good with his talent (and the money it entails).

I genuinely wonder if 1) his life path would have been better had he come here or 2) maybe we just dodged a bullet by missing out on a bad apple.

Either way, not good.

I just don't see the problem here? Who HASN'T walked naked near a school? I say, let he who has not exposed his dong cast the first stone...

I usually upvote your comments as they tend to be very funny.  However, in this case, here is a person who needs some serious help with some mental health issues and he is derailing his career and life because he isn't getting it or refusing it. Sad.

And did he ever get any help at staee under Deandtony, or did that POS human being / coach overlook his struggles and just wanted him to play vs getting Malik some help - I bet the latter.

OK, while I was obviously joking, I guess I need to be all serious now... Your attempt to "blame" a person's mental health struggles on a rival football team's coach is pretty pathetic. Are you really suggesting that Brady Hoke/Jim Harbaugh would have somehow miraculously cured McDowell of these ills, and sent him on a pristine path towards a lucrative, successful, trouble-free future? In my opinion, that childish scapegoating detracts from the real issue of mental health care in our system that you suggest you want to "take seriously."

This, plus I'd add Hoke was the coach for Frank Clark and we all know how that turned out.  There are over a hundred players on a football team every year, so statistically some of them are likely to have issues that a head coach is not going to be able to fix.  I think Dantonio always got portrayed as more of a disciplinarian than he was, but unless there's some pattern with a coach it's bad to blame them for guys who struggle with issues off the field.

Same goes for parents. Positive parenting is obviously the number one influence in a kid's life but there are some people whose struggles are just too much for even the best-intentioned parent who seeks out all kinds of help. Sometimes kids (young adults especially) are unreachable or have to go through some pretty major upheaval before they can pull themselves together.

Unreachable kids are reachable or can be guided - BUT it takes a very smart, disciplined, and emotionally strong parent or, better yet, two parents who are on the same page and who can relieve their spouse when a break is needed.

It's hard work keeping "the little darlings" on a decent life path. It's exhausting but it can be done.

Parents are key when there's an undiagnosed mental health issue that doesn't manifest obviously until something goes horribly, very wrong. Think undiagnosed Bipolar Type 1 or Type 2 - scheiss happens, arrests and psych ward lock downs occur, especially when the kid tries to self-medicate.

If the parents are clueless or give up? That poor kid is pretty much screwed: the courts and "the system" are not equipped to do much to help, they just punish and work to protect the public.

This is obviously an undiagnosed kid/man.

I think mocking and ridicule are appropriate here. Especially if done comedically.

to your point, however, I am glad our society is taking mental health more seriously. That said, actions are actions. I sometimes have the desire to strangle coworkers, but my frontal lobe reminds me of consequences and I start chucking at myself. Bad mental imagination, make a joke, mental healing. Without laughter I would be in a straight jacket.
