Outside of the good Pete Carroll years, USC has been bad more than they've been good over the last 40 years.

Not sure why the media crams them down our throats.  Urban (or any top tier coach) going there is a pipe dream from USC fans.

Do you know who says that exact thing about Michigan? Almost every college football fan outside the B1G. Michigan gets talked up hardcore every single season while going 10-3 and failing to win anything meaningful.

Sure USC has been worse than Michigan lately, but they've also been better in the semi-recent past. They're both big time programs with a ton of history.

"Bad" is probably a bit harsh - but certainly not "very good" for most of those 40 years.  Most people don't realize that.

Here's a statistic for folks.  From 1980 to 2018, outside of the Pete Carroll years, USC has had ONE (ONE!!!) season in which they were Bowl eligible and lost 2 or fewer games.

That season was 1988.  10-2 under Larry Smith.  Lost to U-M in the Rose Bowl as Leroy Hoard had a huge game.

2011 was also 10-2 (under Lane Kiffin).  But also on probation, so no Bowl game.

(1980, 1989 and 1995 don't count.  2 Losses and a tie - but a tie is "half a win, half a loss" for winning percentage purposes).

The Pac-12 may not have any top five teams. But it has more talent than you think and tends to be subject to East Coast bias. Oregon and Washington lost close heartbreakers. They’re both quality teams. Utah is very good. Wazoo is always dangerous. And USC and Stanford are both borderline top 25.  I’d hazard the league is better, top to bottom, than the ACC and the Big 12.

While the trails and tribulations of the football team must be weighing on him, I am sure that the Admissions scandal, especially the latest news, with all the 'SC assistant coaches is also a big factor and the president no doubt "asked" him to leave so she can clean house and set the tone.

He was fired.  Resignation in name only.  Towards the bottom of the article:

"Folt said that the department’s role and Swann’s handling of the nationwide college admissions scandal “was not a part of the decision for me.”"

The context of that sentence was that the "decision" was to terminate Swann.

I like Lynn Swann as an on air persona.  I never understood why he was offered or that he took a job that he had no experience doing.  It was doomed from the get go.  And my suspicion is that the nefarious things that got USC athletics in trouble this time around pre dated Swann.
