OT: Lamar Jackson is just unbelievable

On MNF, he is putting up some godly numbers. Has completed 9 passes on 9 attempts with 3 TDs and almost 100 yard rushing.

Lamar Jackson and patriots D is a deadly combo. Assuming you didn’t butcher your top 4 picks there is just so much room for error. Even just the patriots D has been enough for most people to make the playoffs. Did you get lucky or you expected Lamar to be a weekly starter ?

He’s awesome, but will need to evolve as defenses adjust and figure him out. He’ll still be great, but eventually a defensive scheme will force him into whatever his weakness is (don’t know what it is yet) and then Baltimore will need to scheme in response.

But yeah, he’s an insane weapon right now.  That said, healthy Mahomes, Deshaun Watson and Russell Wilson are insane too right now.
will be interesting to see how NFL defenses adjust over the next few years.

They are running an almost college-like offense right now. Tons of slot drag routes and HB Texas routes complimented by go routes and deep posts on the outside. TEs doing a great job finding soft spots on the secondary. The downhill pistol inside run game which rotates three viable RBs and testing the perimeter with QB runs. I think they can keep the passing game quite simple and Lamar-friendly as long as the run game remains successful.

John Harbaugh and Greg Roman have said repeatedly that they looked at his skillset and purposely designed the offense around it.  They take advantage of his ability to run, but actually limit the amount of called QB runs.  The passing game is setup to use the arm he has, rather than force him into a standard NFL mold.  Similar to what Rich Rod did with Denard - took advantage of a good arm in certain situations, like quick hitters and 'thoughtless' throws where his athletic ability was on display.  Rich Rod did not ask DRob to stand in a pocket and read through progressions, but Hoke did.  We all saw the difference!

Harbaugh is putting Jackson in spots where his athletic ability is on display, rather than forcing him into a risk averse mold.  As far as I'm concerned, JH is an early candidate for NFL Coach of the Year for this completely different Baltimore offense.

I love me some HB texas routes.

One of my go to plays in NCAA 14 is the slot out.  Outside WR run fades, inside WR run outs, and the HB runs a texas route.  It beats man and zone.

And if you are smart with your formation subs you can put your fastest WR at the HB spot and get him matched up with a MLB type.

I hate this statement and the statements that the “league will catch up with him”.  This is true of every offense, no matter the style.  Every team has to come up with adjustments and be able to punish teams for trying to stop the run.  The reality is that this offense is far superior and the league is very slow to innovate out of fear of doing something different.  Colleges have shown you can adjust to in this offense to the defensive adjustments.  This is the future of the NFL and the future of football.

Don't get me wrong, I think Jackson is an amazing athlete, a lot of fun to watch and has a great story of overcoming adversity.

I just see this pattern with quarterbacks that can run. Either an injury effectively ends their career early like RG3 and Culpepper or their rushing production drops off like Vick, Cunningham and Wilson.

So I like many others will watch in awe of Jackson and enjoy the spectacle while it lasts because it's just not sustainable.

I am not sure he has a weakness other than aging like the rest of us mortals. He’s faster than Kap and RG3, taller than Kyler and Russ, and he’s learning how to make the right read and use his touch. Perhaps he has less velocity, but he can still sling it.

No coincidence that he has Roman as his OV and is thriving—same guy who I wish we got with JH from 9ers.

Man remember how pissed the board was when Greg Roman was getting floated as a possible OC for Michigan after we fired Drevno? His pistol offense seems to be working just as well for John as it did for Jim and the 49ers.

Yeah I've been thinking the same thing. Interesting to think what would have happened if Roman came to Michigan. I do wonder though if his offense would be too complicated for college kids to pick up and requires full time practice like the NFL. Because that seems to be at least part of the problem when NFL coordinators come to Michigan. Then instead of the Gattis offense clicking halfway through the season, it may have taken the Roman offense a season and a half.

There was a discussion thread about this on here before the season. The Ravens came right out and said that this is what they were doing. I was intrigued but skeptical.

But, man, does the Ravens braintrust look good right now. Jackson's speed is completely different from most other QBs, even running QBs. He has always had a powerful arm, and he's making good throws. Not all of them are super-difficult, but they are real NFL throws, and because the running game is so dangerous, they are getting favorable looks.

I hope he can keep this up. He's so much fun to watch. My initial reservation is still valid, though: If he gets dinged, that offense changes completely. Look at how Mahomes was affected when he was hurt, and multiply that by the running tendencies of the Jackson offense.
