OT: It's Friday, what the hell y'all drinking?

Submitted by SanDiegoWolverine on July 17th, 2020 at 7:59 PM

How are we not doing these threads anymore. Can't we stop talking about divisive bs and come together and talk about getting slammed?

I live in San Diego and I'm about to hit the local beverage depot for some beer. Any regional recommendations? What are you guys getting into? I'd love some local recommendations you can't get out of your region for next time I decide to do some beer trading or maybe even traveling.

Cheers!

Speaking of beer trading, it would be cool if we had bourbon/whiskey trading among mgobloggers; e.g., mailing 4 or 8 oz samples around. My bottles last far too long (i'm doing it wrong it know) so don't get much variety in this "no bar" era.  I'm too lazy to do this now, but someday.

For one thing it’s whisky.  There is nothing better than slowly sipping (and enjoying) a great scotch or Tasmanian whisky.  Some of my friends say it goes even better with really good Cubans but I don’t know about that since I don’t smoke.

Tree House Juice Machine and a Burial I Used to Consider the Consequences so far and a Burial I Used to be an Athlete in the queue.

Edit: Favorite San Diego brewery is Pure Project. Dig Bottle Logic and Modern Times in Anaheim.

BBA Modem Tones with Vanilla was amazing. Sad to hear if it has fallen off, been a while since I've had one of their beers admittedly.

I love Julius and it's one of my gateway beers to the TH portfolio so I can't rationally discuss it. Haven't had Blue yet but want to try it. Also have Daze, Very Gggreen, and King Julius in the fridge. Also have 3 Really Big Bird sitting in there. One of the guys from the local beer geoup moved to Boston and he just sends us stuff whenever we ask. It's pretty pretty great.

Had Juice Machine, Very Hazy, and the first year of Summer from TreeHouse last year.

Summer was the hands down favorite from everyone that drank it blind.  If Maine hadn't mandated a quarantine for out of state visitors (would have hit TreeHouse on the way up), would have hit TreeHouse again this year.

Nursing local breweries (Black Flag) during CoVid.

Drinking bourbon (Midwinters Night Dram) because why not.

Just cracked my first Blackrocks Presque Ale.  Very good.

This brewery doesn’t miss...Coconut Brown, Grand Rabbits, limited edition Bock.

I'm having a really nice cup of Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee with just a splash of heavy cream in it.

Once this cup is half empty, I'm lighting up some super lemon haze, lovingly rolled up in a zigzag white.

Devil's Backbone Eight Point IPA. I'd kind of drifted off IPAs but it's all my mom will drink and I'm back living with my parents (thanks covid and my ex-girlfriend!), so I guess I'm back on 'em. The liquor store on the corner doesn't have Bell's Two-Hearted or I'd get that.

A Wernesgrüner pilsner- pretty good! Light and refreshing for the heat today. I made some coconut shrimp and a roasted beet salad with orange, grapefruit, red onion, and goat cheese for dinner.

It's the only way we can use the "whole animal" similar to Hot Dogs. What a marketing genius move calling cow parts "hot dogs".  The marketing went so strong it made the recipient of the marketing change animals!

To appease your request, we'll call goat cheese... Cold Cats.

Be sure to tip your waitresses on the way out!

I had a couple cans of Fairhope Cheap Sunglasses, a kolsch-style ale, to go with rib-eyes I grilled for my 91-year-old mother-in-law tonight before we head back to the Mitten. (She had her usual 'toddy', i.e. vodka martini, don't bother with the vermouth.) Beer wasn't bad, not great. Like most kolsches, it's a good summer session-type brew. I'd buy it again. Fairhope Brewery apparently makes a wide variety of beers, but only cans a few of them for regional distribution. I haven't yet come across any widely available Alabama beer that compares well with what gets brewed back home, but each time I here I try a few more, hoping to get lucky.

I read an article recently that claimed Sauvignon Blanc was the best wine pairing for my Zodiac sign.

I'm not sure I buy that, but I'm going to finish this bottle for science!

red pop.  in a coffee cup.  was going to light the BBQ but dear wife said to hold off until tomorrow night.

played hooky most of the day and took 4 of the younger kids to see family we don't get to see much of and swim/paddle/boat.  a good choice.

EDIT:  one of our favorite mgobloggers gave me the heads up on the comet which is now visible over much of our beautiful state.  it is in the NW sky, fairly low on the horizon.  we still have some glow from the sunset up north here so the comet is just coming into view.  suggestion from him to grab a pair of binos to look at it.  looks something like this picture, and is actually fairly still in the sky, unlike a shooting star.
