Jesus. I'm old.
well, Jesus is really old so ....
some would say eternally so
Perhaps I should amend the description to "the perfect 70s rock album." Rock has been too diverse over the decades to truly have a single album represent its peak, IMHO.
“Perhaps” isn’t a word we hear in conversations now a days… yet we have it three times in one thread.
70's or not , you really could have just said "the perfect album" There have probably been some others, but nothing tops Dark Side.
Well said
Username is on the Money. It Speaks to Me.
No, I think you had it right the first time.
I really connect with the song, “Brain Damage.”
You lock the door
And throw away the key
There's someone in my head but it's not me
the moon is much older than 50, erego, the dark side must also be older than 50. smh

"There is no dark side of the moon. As a matter in fact, its all dark"
Gotta love that out-take.
Definitely one of my favorite albums. With that, Mother on the Wall is my favorite Pink Floyd song.
Are you familiar with the live version from Is There Anybody Out There? They extend Gilmour's guitar solo, and it's glorious.
The version in the movie is pretty boss, too. (can't link YT from work PC)
Live version of Keep Talking is really good, too.
This my favorite PF live & the video is fantastic.
I have that concert on a blu-ray encoded as a 5.1 multichannel music disc. It’s really well done. Been getting a lot of play lately in my man cave.
Yep! I think I have every Pink Floyd album, including most compilation albums.
Every album of theirs is uniquely captivating.
Live at Pompeii is probably my fav live footage, besides seeing them live.
One of the epitomes of '70s album rock. Zzzzzzzzzzz
I heard this album syncs up well to Paul Blart Mall Cop 2.
Some friends and I tried the famous Dark Side of the Moon + Wizard of Oz thing and agreed that while there were some moments of consonance, it really doesn't work at all for the most part.
(We were also completely sober and drug-free, so it's possible that we might've missed the whole point of the exercise there.)
I really was high at the time…
Start the album at the third roar of the lion.
So yeah that comes from a podcast I believe where some guys all get together to watch Paul Blart Mall Cop 2 over the Thanksgiving holidays or something. The YT video has their audio synced with the movie scenes and the songs from the album. Hilarious watch for those interested.
And as a personal aside, as a drum corps geek, I highly highly recommend giving a watch to the Bluecoats 2016 show called 'Downside Up' which featured The Great Gig in the Sky as the ballad and it's one of the most beautiful arrangements I've heard. If you just want to skip right to it the timestamp is around 5:48 for when the ballad begins.
Blart Side Of The Mall is wild. There is a guy on YouTube who reviews it and loses his shit while he sees how well it lines up
The artwork sucks. The music was overproduced and kinda boring. Still it is from the floyd so it was probably worth $7.99 when it came out.
If your post was about Animals I would be less grumpy...one of my favorites from that era.
Thank you for your input, Mr. Waters.
Hold on a second! Roger wrote the lyrics. Yes, username checks out again. So much love for this album. Unique, given it explored the concepts of madness and time. Happy 50th DSoTM.
"overproduced and kinda boring"? Yeah, it was only on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart for over 15 consecutive years. Yeah, really sucked. LOL.
Damn this project almost makes me forget what a prick Roger Waters is
Yea, but he puts on a damn good (though highly political) show.
Wish they would have performed more together.
the great gig in the sky
that woman had a set of pipes on her. i haven't listened to that album probably in 40 years and i still remember her singing.
Whenever I see a tribute act do that song live, they always have 2 or 3 women singing what Clare Torry did all by her own damn self.
In a similar vein, we saw a friend-of-friends' Queen tribute band many moons (sorry) ago, and they had to have 2-3 different vocalists because surprisingly one rando person typically doesn't have Freddie Mercury's vocal range.
Try to get to a Brit Floyd gig if you can. They usually perform that tune and always have a singer that nails it.
The Pulse version with Sam Brown, Claudia Fontaine, and Durga McBroom kicks ass. I like it better than the original album version(no disrespect to Ms. Torry)
Good call! Listening to it now; they do nail it!!
From Wikipedia:
Although it held the number one spot in the US for only a week, it remained in the Billboard 200 albums chart for 736 nonconsecutive weeks (from 17 March 1973 to 16 July 1988).
Trivia: Obscured by Clouds, which generally sits before Dark Side of the Moon in Pink Floyd discographies, was recorded after the start of the Dark Side sessions.
Money, it's a gas
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash
Ha! Listening to this album (and all Pink Floyd albums) on my bumpy 4+ hour flight to Vegas.
They made some great music.
Happy birthday indeed! This is a near perfect album. Hot take: Money is by far the worst song on this album (but is still good.)
Not a hawt take at all. Us and Them is my favorite song on the album. I love a slow burn.
Money is pretty cool because it starts out in 7/8 time then goes to 4/4 and repeats. The middle instrument part swings. IMO, there are no bad cuts but some are better than others.
The year was 1974 and I got my first job at the Huron Theatre in Pontiac (burned to the ground several years ago) and after I worked there a while I saved up enough money to buy a Kenwood amp, a Bang & Olufsen turntable and Marantz speakers. The speakers, by ther way, were just slightly ahead of their time.
Anyways........with this sweet steriophonic set up in bedroom (didnt have the money for quadraphonic) I then went out and bought three albums
1. Led Zeppelin Physical Graffiti
2. David Bowie Changes
3. Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon
Fun fact is when I was 15 I had pretty good fucking taste in music.
I know there is a Dark Side of the Moon/Wizard of Oz connection. But has anyone here every looked at the similarities between Wizard of Oz and Silence of the Lambs.
You probably can't play Dark Side of the Moon to S of Lambs though.
