OT: Graduation Ring

Submitted by BeileinBuddy on

I'm graduating at the end of winter '11 so I'm looking into ordering my graduation ring now.

Who's the best company to go with, Balfour or Jostens? (or any other companies)

Any alums with advice/experiences to share when it came to getting your class rings?

... you will not wear it by 2012.

The only rings of that ilk that look good IMHO are of the Marines variety.  On some 70 year old guy with a grey jarhead haircut who looks like he could still break your effing neck.

I bought a UM one, best at the time, and I didn't wear it much at all. Starting the summer after graduation.

In the workplace, you look like Douchey McDouche ("Look at me! I went to Michigan!"). Nights and weekends, who wants to have a big-ass ring on your finger?

Think for a moment.  When is the last time you saw one outside of A2 city limits?

Save your money, go to Vegas, and lay it all on UM-OSU with the points.  Then go to the club and make it rain...

do you actually wear rings (assuming that you did not play a sport)? I rarely see it in the business world, except for Texans (and some other Southerners), who all seem to love them.

I kind of want one (assuming I could get one retroactively), but don't even see anybody in the Northeast wear one. While I am pretty douchey to begin with, I'd like to not increase it.

I actually have two:

Signet style for business.

Traditional for weekends.

I agree that the Traditional style is over the top for business as you get older - I think a young guy can pull it off much easier.

My opinion for what it's worth.

Yes - you can get them retroactively.  I did that with my Traditional about 5 years ago.

EDIT: I don't have any Hos, so I must be Mob!!!

I don't think you can go wrong with either company.  I went with a white gold traditional ring with a blue stone from Herff Jones and couldn't be happier.  I didn't get it to be flashy or to say "I graduated from Michigan".... I got it as a present form my father who has his own college ring that he wears everyday.  I don't wear mine all the time... generally I don't wear any jewelry or watch other than my wedding ring.  But when I do wear it, I don't feel like a douche... but rather I feel a connection to my dad.

Thanks for the advice guys, I'm mainly getting one to have as a keepsake. I'll probably wear it for a year or two until the novelty wears off or god forbid my body changes and it stops fitting. When I got my HS ring my sophomore year there, I wore the entire year and by time I was a senior it found its way to the safe deposit box.
