"Best will run in the 100 meters for St. Lucia, a Caribbean island with an estimated population of just over 163,000. Best was born in Vallejo, California, but his father holds dual citizenship in St. Lucia and the United States."
Glad to see that even though his NFL career ended due to concussions he is still pursing athletics at its apex.
Dreams may/will change.... Never stop pursuing them. Above all else never stop believing in yourself.

I've known about St Lucia, but I never thought it was its own country!
Same. So, I did learn something by this. I know it's a very popular island but I never knew whether it's a country or just an island that's part of another. And, according to wikipedia, it is the only country in the world named after a woman! So, we can all add that to our Jeopardy repertoire.
Just a hunch that if you didn't know that St. Lucia was a sovereign nation, you may not need to worry about your Jeopardy repertoire.

where smart people lurk, waiting to point out how smart they are.
Trinidad & Tobago are one country, not two.
That suit! Orange pants with black pinstripes, the matching orange bowtie paired with a yellow shirt. The green blazer with yellow polka dots. It looks absurd on him, but I could totally make that work. Dhani Jones would look fly in that.
Funny--that jacket looked dark green on my laptop, but it does look black now that I'm seeing on the desktop.
Got me too.

That's great news. He was a great talent whose concussions never let him truly explore how good he could have been at football. Now he gets an opportunity to use his athleticism in a safer way, for glory and for country.
Famiily citizenship is enough reason to run for a different nation, especially given how crowded the US track and field scene is. This is a win for everyone.
Considering the feces-laden water, dismembered body parts washing up on shore, kidnappings, and bloody shootouts at tourist hotels, I'm not sure that being in Rio is all that safe.

I think it is a sham the way many lessor-tiered atheletes get into the Olympics through the back door. Just because his father retained dual citizenship shouldn't give him a ticket into the most famed athletic event in the world. Let him qualify on his own country's team. Has Mr. Best ever set foot in St. Lucia?
I forgot about him. I actually took a late round flyer on him in a fantasy draft when he was a rookie. If I remember, he has some good games for awhile. (1,000 LOS yards in 2010.)
Good for Javid, I hope he does well! Too bad his NFL career was cut short...
Best was probably the second most fun to watch player I've seen (after Denard, obviously). Like Denard he was so much faster than everyone else that once he got past the linemen, there was a good chance he was going to score no matter where on the field they were. It seemed he was good for a 70+ yard run at least once a game.
Cal really had an impressive run of RBs in the late 00s: Marshawn Lynch, Justin Forsett, Jahvid Best, Shane Vereen. I don't think Vereen has been a starter in the NFL but he's played a decent amount.
Oh yeah! I forget about CJ Anderson since he really wasn't that productive in college. I guess Cal was too hard on the decline at that point for him to have the same opportunity the four I mentioned had.

I still remember that brutal hit he took in college. He was seizing before he hit the ground. Ouch!
Good for him! Hoping he medals for St. Lucia.
