OT: First (and likely last) visit to Angelo's

Submitted by crg on November 9th, 2023 at 7:07 PM

The wife & I are planning to try out Angelo's tomorrow for the first - and likely only - time.  That said, what are recommendations for the best/signature items to get there?  Is there anything that a first-time visitor should know?  Any special things that someone "has to do there at least one before they die?"  We've known about the place's reputation for a long time (and the Dave Seigel song), just never got around to it.

Thanks!

Me too, but I'll never forget my first attempt at Angelo's...

Confession:

It was Welcome Week, parents in town, and we had planned on meeting for brunch at Angelo's.  However...

The night before, I went out with a few friends to fraternity parties where, hours in, I was arrested. Why?  I was urinating in bushes at the corner of South U/Washtenw and was approached by the police.  I panicked, dumped the beer and ran.  They chased me down and arrested me for MIP, public urination, littering and resisting arrest.  They were pissed.  I was humiliated.  (As my friends would say) I had essentially hit for the cycle.  Needless to say, my fist Angelo's experience was delayed.  Unforgettable.

Eggs Benedict was the first thing that came to mind for me as well.

I always enjoyed getting breakfast at Angelo's on the occasions when I could. Though it hasn't been that often since I lived on Ann St. twenty years ago. It was disappointing to hear it's closing forever.

Oh man, I didn't realize they were closing for good! I never thought the food was all that special but the atmosphere is fantastic and decidedly old-school Ann Arbor. I always liked the thick cut cinnamon raisin toast along with whatever else I was ordering. Parking is tough over there outside of the expensive structures; I usually just drove around in the neighborhood and walked however far I ended up. if it's a nice day you could just park over on the other side of campus and take a stroll through the Diag etc. (You know, to earn that raisin toast.)

Deep-fried french toast, with raisin toast.

This whole thing feels like such a shame. Of course the university is right there to swoop in at the hint that the owners were ready to retire. No reason why there couldn't have been a New Angelos on the ground floor of whatever high-rise crap they're putting there. Another Ann Arbor icon bites the dust in the name of something UM wants.

Whoa, be fair, read the articles out there (MLive, Ann Arbor observer) - Steve Vangelatos, the current owner who had taken over for his dad, is now 65 years old and none of his kids want to take over nor has anyone else jumped in with an offer. He has baked 150-300 loaves of bread 7 days a week since 1986.

THe offer of $4.5 million for the property was simply a good deal for him and his family.

The UM comes in for a lot of criticism and it can be deserved, but the notion that they were part of eliminating an Ann Arbor icon, is way off base.

This seems to happen more frequently than I would expect. Can think of at least a handful of restaurants (not just A2) that were local institutions, seemingly doing very well, and closed when the owner wanted to retire because no one wanted to take them over. None of them made sense, but they don't seem to be isolated incidents...

Just take in the atmosphere.   It’s been a part of “history on the Hill” (dorms).

My usual is a veggie omelette .. and a side of corned beef hash.  Raisin toast is good too!

Mangia.. enjoy

Great memories at Angelo's, even later in life. It was there that my daughter locked the car keys in the car. We were eating and she asked for the keys because she wanted to grab something. She was maybe 7, so I was watching her out the window the whole time. As she returned, her physical demeanor was completely different. When she got back to the table, she burst out crying, "I locked the keys in the car!!" We had to find a guy on a Sunday to help us, no easy task, and once he unlocked it, my husband had to shimmy in through a passenger window to hit the door locks and if he didn't get it done in like 20 seconds, the car would shut down and there was no way to start it. Good times. They're known for their raisin toast.

The last time I was there (which could be my last time) was early October.  We went for a late Sunday brunch before the hockey game.  I went with my daughter and we shared the pumpkin pancakes and an omelette.

There was a clock on the wall with a countdown to closing.  I think it said about 75 days so that would be late December.

We had to wait about 1/2 hour and they were getting ready to close when we left.

We also managed to squeeze in a visit before they pack it in. I recommend the corned beef hash.

If you’re looking for a brunch-time replacement, try aMa on State Street.

Always thought Angelo’s was overrated. If it were anywhere else it would just be another pretty good diner/breakfast place but not legendary. I’m partial to the Fleetwood Diner if it is still around.

Breakfast is overrated. There are only so many combinations of eggs, meat, potatoes, bread and cheese, and after about 20 years of eating them, I just wait until lunch to get something that actually tastes good.

If you're ever in San Francisco, have breakfast at Plow, and have the Plow breakfast. You will take this all back. You get lemon ricotta pancakes, two eggs scrambled or fried, breakfast potatoes, and your choice of bacon or sausage, with real maple syrup.
