OT: File under: Who approves this crap?

Submitted by 4godkingandwol… on

Not sure if this has been discussed yet, but saw this article in the Seattle Times regarding a UW infographic advising women how to do their makeup and hair for cheer-team. It's really pissed a lot of people off here, including those in the cheer community who feel it belittles the athletic nature of cheer.  More than anything, I just wonder how the hell does this stuff get approved?  People in charge are in charge just because...

The ad is just putting into words what everyone already knows.

What the ad creator didn't realize is that job requirements based upon looks and body type need to be kept to a wink-wink-nudge-nudge arrangement and not put into print.

Like the no visible tattoos- nothing worse in this world than a beautiful woman defacing her body with ink. I have yet to see anyone, male or female, with any sort of ink that looks remotely good.

It's just the truth. Everyone is so sensitive about everything. There's an immediate response to bitch about something...

Be fuckin' real. What's your expectations of a way a "cheerleader" should look?

Okay. /thread

The other side is that girls love to be cheerleaders. They're not just there to attract guys. Many women love the pursuit of beauty as an end in itself. It's a hobby and a passion.

It actually doesn't happen as much now as 10-15 years ago, but I've had students who are made to feel bad for being interested in makeup, hair, fashion, etc. Other teachers and students alike have told them that they were wrong for liking that stuff. Hogwash.

This is basically a casting call/audition. Cheerleaders are entertainers. This kind of instruction appears in ads or call sheets for models and actors all the time.

Also, the argument about objectifying women...aren't we in many ways objectifying men by watching football???

Honestly, about half of these are perfectly applicable to ANY professional job interview. The half that aren't seem pretty reasonable job-specific encouragements for successful interviewing.

People are always looking to be outraged by something and the hypersensitive PC crowd that refuses to live in the real world may march on Olympia because of this. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this. Here comes the hysterical sexism charge over nothing. Look, the military has a similar code for women, and men for that matter. Can't have heroin chic and out of shape people in either. Al

Funny thing is, I was basically raised by women (maternal family was all women except for my grandfather) and absolutely believe to the depths of me that women are the equals of men.  Would never occur to me to consider a woman less than a man.

But things like the OP bewilder me.  The women who want to participate in cheerleading know what it is.  If it is objectification at all, it's willing objectification.  All these folks who decry cheerleading for that are basically saying that a woman shouldn't have the right to choose to value the things that cheerleading stands for.

Which is just as backward and non-feminist as the thing they rail against.

Feminists are goofy sometimes.

Somehow this will be the mens fault because we like woman that are skinny and high maintenance that makes other women have low self-esteem.

I don't get it, isn't part of cheerleading projecting an image? Has no-one seen image and attire guides at work? People who are offended by things are just looking for things to be offended by.

My daughter does cheer competitions.  They have all these guidelines.

And here's the untold truth:  These guidelines come from women coaches and the girls themselves.

There are no men coming up with these.  There are no men at all even involved.

This is all of, by, and for the girls.  And they love it.

They love the dress-up component of it.  They love to perform for an audience.

At the same time, they are total hard-asses with attitude.  Modern cheer is gymnastics set to music.  They are all very athletic, like gymnasts.  They are all very competitive.

The competitions are very interesting.  You have young girls in pretty bows and makeup and curled hair, walking around with knee braces and team outfits with names like "Extreme" and "Scorpion" and "Dynamite".

My daughter's coach, a Baltimore Ravens cheerleader, wears a sweatshirt that says "Bad to the Bow".  I laugh at that.  It's the perfect synopsis of their outlook and attitude.

It's like the Michigan women's softball team that is crushing opponents on the way to the WCWS . . . all while wearing bows in their hair.

Get used to it people.  This is the new face of "feminism" for the current generation.  Women can go out and kick ass . . . and still be women.  They don't feel forced to be de-facto men.

As the father of a young daughter, I could not be happier.  She does not feel that any doors are closed to her.  At the same time, she also feels free to be a girl and do what girls like to do.

The stands aren't 100% filled with heterosexual men.

I don't have a problem with the Washington ad because it's essentially outlining uniform protocol for the position, not because "we're men and we want to ogle women so get over it".

You're missing the point. Certain types of women are attractive not only to heterosexual men, but most people. Your thought that heterosexual men are alone in considering what women are pretty is wrong.

Right over your head, buddy.

The point trying to be made by the OP is that this is somehow sexist.

However, if you read the Washington ad, they're simply stating apparel and grooming rules for their cheerleaders.  And if you scroll up, many of the people dismissing this above are doing so because in pretty much any job in America, you have rules governing your appearance.

They can't wear jewelry or tattoos, I can't either as a male in my office job.  They have to wear their hair a certain way, so do I.  I can't grow it long (or even grow a beard, technically).  They're requiring a certain length or style of shorts, I have to wear dress pants, no jeans or shorts.  They have to wear a certain shoe style, same here, I can't wear tennis shoes.  Etc.

It's not an "I like hawt chix!" argument.  This is not about sexism or who does or does not find cheerleaders attractive.

To have clothing and appearance rules when applying for a position is totally legitimate - most of us adhere to them every single day.  I find nothing wrong with what Washington did here.  That's what makes this OP dumb.  But because they put a picture of a pretty blonde on there, peope are searching for sexism controversy where there shouldn't be any.

That's the point.

on the struggles of NFL cheerleaders. It's like you're saying that shallow conformist pressure is okay because it's everywhere. A) not in my view and B) much more powerful for cheerleaders.

OP really missed his mark here.  Thought a lot more of this blog's readership were in the PC/SJW camp.

Reality exists regardless of how we perceive it.  Acting outraged by dress codes for cheerleaders, or that cheerleaders should be pretty and in shape females that have little effect on the game is just doing your best to be outraged.

You're probably outraged that you're a poor, short, fat guy that doesn't pick up 10s at the bar too.

My guess is that it was put together by someone in the cheer department, or by some girls on the team who love this stuff. I dated a cheerleader in college and they loved to talk about the look and style as well. Like Hockey/Football/Basketball guys don't go for a certain look with their gear? Uh, yea they do.

These girls got to put something together for the cheer tryout, it was a fun project for them I'm sure. Good for them, do your thing ladies. Why do we care?

Do you think that's funny?  Can't tell if serious.  My daughter's best friend on her competitive cheer team is TG.  It's really important to her to be as girlie as the other girls; it's not a political statement or an effort to get attention, it's just being who she feels she is.  She takes a TON of negative reaction -- the looks, whispers, even comments -- to do it, so it's not because she has fun with it.  She does it b/c otherwise she's living a lie.

I guess you Southerners are all having such fun teasing and being afraid of TG, that you don't stop to think these are actual people too,and you might not have any clue what they are going through.  Or, let's be blunt, what you are putting them through.

And I'm not being PC -- this is my first-hand observation of the real world.  I might not have said this a year ago.

Actually I self-identify as a moderator on this board, and I feel that I deserve the right to ban you for your consistenly ignorant comments. Did you not get enough negging the other day for your rage against that horrible urchin who made a joke about soccer players fighting with purses?

I absolutely love it when a person of the holier-than-thou crowd (I'd say liberals, but there are northern conservatives who of the same mindset) makes some statement to the effect of "everyone in the South is prejudiced!!".

Guess what, bitch boy? That's prejudiced. Stating that everyone in a group (southerners) has a like characteristic (prejudice), before meeting everyone in that group and confirming said assertion to 100% accurate for every member.

Congratulations, you played yourself.

Going out of his way to make anti-transgender jokes is basic assholism.  I'm sure he'll whinge about how I'm waging a PC assault on his free speech, which whatever.  My free speech includes the right to call him out for being an asshole.

Superstringer put it far, far better than I ever could - transgender people are *people*, first and foremost, and they are overwhelmingly more likely to be homeless and/or victims of violent sexual assualt specifically because of their gender identity.  Cheap jokes at their expense may not cause actual harm but they indicate a callous indifference to a demographic that has to constantly justify their humanity in this day and age and pays for this burden with their lives.

Actual MGoModerators - I apologize if I crossed the politics line here because I do respect the great job you do and I've made that job more difficult by dint of this point, but I will not apologize for calling out  Straight Dave's brand of assholism

This was posted on the "edge of the Internet" Michigan board yesterday. The consensus was that it is very exclusive bordering on racist if you really break down some of the do's and don't's. Hair, nails, bronze/tan face, etc.
