OT: Fat Tuesday

Submitted by Blue@LSU on February 16th, 2021 at 12:51 PM

Fat Tuesday is upon us. Down here, it marks the official last day of the Mardi Gras/Carnival season which, needless to say, has been rather subdued this year. While most regions of the country don’t really do it up for Mardi Gras and Fat Tuesday (thought I was surprised at how many do), I do know that in many ethnic communities it is a tradition to celebrate the day before Lent with a feast and some sweet cakes/foods.

So I was just wondering if anyone has any traditions that they keep today. I’m sure some of you will be eating paczkis. Others may have pancakes. Anything else?

Hopefully next year the celebrations will resume. But until then, Joyeux Mardi Gras! Laissez les bons temps rouler!

Mods, sorry if this is too OT, but it seemed like a slow day on the board. Of course, take down if necessary.

It more or less says "go fuck yourself Putin." After looking at some other images, plus a little research, I've determined the second line says "на хуй" (roughly "to dick" or "on a dick"), which combined with the Иди at the top gives a phrase more or less meaning "go fuck yourself."

I've chosen to spend this Mardi Gras trying to imagine what Ed Orgeron would sound like singing "Jambalaya". If you're having a low moment, I suggest you try that same. I've been laughing to myself like an insane person all morning

Obviously, Mardi Gras reminds me of the few (drunken) days I spent in New Orleans and Baton Rouge while attending a friends wedding.  And, as we know, tourist traps rarely work out for the best.  But I will always and forever recommend the beignets at Cafe Dumond.  They are a treat worth risking the tourist trap legacy!

Oh, and the margaritas/daiquiri's you can select out of various slurpee machines are fuggin' AWESOME!

Roads were too bad in Michigan to get Paczki's before work. I'll see if the bakery up the street is still open by the time I get home. Pretty sad I haven't had one yet.

Was actually just in New Orleans this past weekend. Technically my first Mardi Gras weekend. Darn shame to see the entire city not really able to celebrate the way it wants to, but I suppose we've all got bigger things to worry about.

Still plenty of people out and about, though. Especially on Magazine St. Thank god the restaurants were open, too. If I couldn't have my Jacques-Imo's fix when I got down there, I would've blown a gasket. Top-5 restaurant I've ever been to in my life. Anywhere, regardless of cuisine. Period. So good that they were who catered our wedding a few years ago.

Got to take some King Cake back home too, which was great. Still working through it, and I almost choked on the plastic baby last night. Thought that thing meant I was supposed to get good luck.

Paczki (for that is in fact the plural) are too rich for my blood (literally) nowadays, but shoveling out was a bracing experience this morning. I mean, not that it matters quite as much when you work from your home office, but it took nearly an hour to do the drive and the sidewalk.

Shoveling snow is my way of dealing with Michigan winters - I can pretend I'm in control. The worse the weather is, the more I'm out there clearing the walks and driveways. Today I'm literally buried - my home office is in the basement, and the cover on the window well is 8 inches under the snow. My shade is up but almost no light is leaking in here.

Offensive post! Can we change to curvy or voluptuous Tuesday?  How would you feel if you were a big ole fatty and then had to stomp around on Fat Tuesday with everyone looking at you like it's your special day.

years ago a gangster i had a warrant out on for murder got caught in louisiana, in a town about 1/2 hour out of new orleans.  he was caught with some other gangsters in a stolen car with a bunch of guns (what could wrong with that?).  anyway, the dude who caught him was the LT (lieutenant) at that police department and eventually he had to come to socal and testify in our case.  great guy and of course we became friends.

he invited me to come visit him at mardi gras and he would give me a 'company car', aka, a police car for me to drive , take it into new orleans.   i asked him what was it like out there for prosecutors and he says (in that great louisiana-cajun drawl/accent), 'oh, the district attorney of the parish, he does as he pleases'.  i hadn't met mrs. XM yet but i didn't take him up on the offer.  i could see big trouble if i had....

If you are concerned your post might be too OT, just flag it as double OT - "OTOT" - just to be safe!!

I LOVE the OT rule.  Call me a moran, but I can never deduce the nature of a post just from its title!
