OT: End of an Era at 89X
2020 dong punch #4,827
Money quote: "The website offered no details on the new format, saying only that fans of new rock are "probably not going to like it."

My guess is a switch to country. Sellouts
November 18th, 2020 at 3:09 PM ^
Maybe if we had a country station that actually played country and not that new crap they are putting out these days.
November 18th, 2020 at 3:21 PM ^
Can't WAIT to hear how "real country" is defined by MGoBlog readers.
November 18th, 2020 at 3:36 PM ^
How about country where they aren't rapping for starters.
Nothing wrong with rap, just like to keep it separate from my country music.
November 18th, 2020 at 3:40 PM ^
Don't touch my truck, bro.
November 18th, 2020 at 4:24 PM ^
Don’t touch my sister. She’s mine.
November 18th, 2020 at 4:39 PM ^
Get your mitts off my rack!
November 18th, 2020 at 5:11 PM ^
This is real country.
November 18th, 2020 at 3:22 PM ^
My go-to Sirius station is Prime Country.
That's the music I cut my teeth on as an undergrad in Nashville. For a kid from Detroit, that freshmen dorm experience was life-changing, musically speaking.
November 18th, 2020 at 3:38 PM ^
I thought you were an undergrad in Moscow?
November 18th, 2020 at 4:45 PM ^
His apprenticeship is Moscow. His universities are Moscow, Nashville, and Ann Arbor.
November 18th, 2020 at 5:14 PM ^
Hotel Putingrad, my radio rarely leaves Sirius Prime Country. Great minds think alike....and so does ours!
November 18th, 2020 at 4:04 PM ^
There is very little new rock out there. I had 89X as an app or in an app over the summer when I went on a kick listening to alt rock. It was a step back in time. There is almost nothing new to play, and what they were trying doesn't qualify as rock to me.
Can't really blame anyone from switching away from a genre that has very little following.
November 18th, 2020 at 5:27 PM ^
I moved back to the area 5 years ago and was surprised they were still playing the alt rock from the 90’s and 2000’s. There is a ton of good music out there they could have tapped into to keep the genre fresh. I don’t want to listen to oldie alt rock. I gave up and stuck to Sirius.
November 19th, 2020 at 3:17 PM ^
“There is very little new rock out there.”
Absolute bullshit. XM Radio begs to differ.
November 18th, 2020 at 7:02 PM ^
I was born in 1998 and I will miss 89x. It was a great radio station.
November 18th, 2020 at 2:57 PM ^
Was that one of Detroit's hard rock stations? I feel that I've listened to it many times while driving through and around the city when visiting home. Probably migrating to easy listening soft jazz. You know, like the football teams in the area...
November 18th, 2020 at 3:22 PM ^
'Twas "real" alternative ("new rock"). Not, like, Nirvana alternative.
November 18th, 2020 at 3:24 PM ^
Think "Plowed" by Sponge. And they would filter in Canadian artists too since it was based in Windsor I think.
November 18th, 2020 at 3:25 PM ^
"South Detroit," to be precise, alternative format.
In its 90s heyday, there was nothing like it, and the on-air personalities were universally great.
November 18th, 2020 at 3:34 PM ^
I still listen to Christina's Time Warp pretty much every Sunday morning, though you now need to do it via her website since she was taken off the air in 2017.

I dated a girl in high school who's previous boyfriend was an 89x DJ. She knew her way around Windsor night spots. Felt like I was dating royalty at the time.
November 18th, 2020 at 4:47 PM ^
Pushing Dave and Chuck out killed the station.
November 18th, 2020 at 3:00 PM ^
It used to be good in the 90’s and maybe a bit later. Haven’t listened to am/fm radio in a long time and rarely even drive now due to Covid and WFH.
November 18th, 2020 at 3:03 PM ^
This is huge news. I didn't know people listened to the radio anymore.
November 18th, 2020 at 3:52 PM ^
Not everyone cares to pay for XM....I, for one, would rather listen to radio for free than pay $20 a month to listen to the same thing.
November 18th, 2020 at 4:19 PM ^
You could threaten to cancel every five months so they keep you at $5/month.
November 18th, 2020 at 4:38 PM ^
agreed - Led Zep's Pandora station is awesome
November 18th, 2020 at 4:21 PM ^
Sirius was a godsend while traveling for work, but not having done that for now 9, looking at 18, months, I can't pay for the stupid app, since it crashes every other song without fail.
November 18th, 2020 at 4:38 PM ^
I don't have XM. We have Amazon music, which i think is $15/mo. Can connect the phone to the car via Bluetooth and listen anywhere in the house or on walks or at work wherever. There are also podcasts and all sorts of things that are free.
Plus, I'm not dissing anyone for their lifestyle choices. just making an observation with a touch of cheekiness.
November 18th, 2020 at 5:17 PM ^
Ihatebux, I paid $80 for a year.
November 18th, 2020 at 3:03 PM ^
that was my go to station back in the day for alternative rock back in the 90s. at least i now have pandora and the like.

Why is a guy who lives in Minnesota posting about a radio station in SE MI?

Why is a guy who lives in New York City posting about a guy who lives in Minnesota posting about a radio station in SE MI?
November 18th, 2020 at 3:07 PM ^
Minnesota is a funny way to spell Moscow.
November 18th, 2020 at 3:26 PM ^
People move.
November 18th, 2020 at 3:37 PM ^
But do they move on?
November 18th, 2020 at 4:22 PM ^
Like any good Michigan fan, I'm permanently stuck in the last century.
November 18th, 2020 at 4:52 PM ^
You can take the boy out of Michigan but you can’t take the Michigan out of the boy.
November 18th, 2020 at 3:39 PM ^
It's the interwebs thing. I can listen to radio stations from all over the earth.
November 18th, 2020 at 3:43 PM ^
I listened to the station as child in 90s, but haven’t listened to local radio in a very long time. Between podcasts and Spotify, seems like local radio stations would be dying off in popularity.
November 18th, 2020 at 4:00 PM ^
I like my Pandora and such, but their playlists get repetitive. Their so-called algorithms aren't much better than a ADHD 10 year old in picking a rotation. And once you have gone through the horrifying experience of trying to cancel with SiriusXM that's no longer an option.
OTA radio at least gives you variety, and it costs exactly what I'm willing to pay for music. I have 3,000 or so songs on my SD card if I want to listen to something specific.
Podcasts... still don't get the point.
November 18th, 2020 at 4:28 PM ^
I try to be sympathetic to call center folks as a general rule, but, yes, the Sirius staff is the worst, like way worse than Comcast.
November 18th, 2020 at 4:38 PM ^
I had a reminder to call every 85 days to get the 5/mo deal. Miss one day and they charge you full freight for 3 months. Credit if you cancel now? Not happening. Call in another 80 days, try to cancel and they sent me through 15 hoops to finally get it done, hanging up on me at least twice.
Kicker? They actually did credit me the dollar or so prorated I believe, so they had lied from the get go.
Never again. I will burn in hell before they will see another cent from me.
November 18th, 2020 at 3:07 PM ^
One of my go to stations in the early 90s. Haven't really listened to them in 20 years though.
November 18th, 2020 at 3:23 PM ^
They were great with Vince Cannova, Kelly Brown, Greg Gnyp, etc. This is a good read if you are so inclined. https://www.theverticalfiles.com/verts-blog/the-seeds-of-89x

If this was 1994, I’d be devastated
November 18th, 2020 at 3:10 PM ^
I can't wait until 80's big hair band roar back in 2021.
Wait - White Lion.
I'll Wait - Van Halen.
Go Blue.

this sucks!!! ever since 98.7 switched formats to smooth jazz in the 90's 89x was my go to!!! since i drive a car built in 2008 i still listen to 89x all of the time and its going to suck not being able to turn to that station a hear a song that i grew up with...
November 18th, 2020 at 3:41 PM ^
You know WLLZ is back right? 106.7 I think, though format is obviously a little different 20+ years later.
