OT: Dwayne Haskins experiment over

Submitted by uofmchris1 on October 7th, 2020 at 10:14 AM

The Washington Football Team has announced that Dwayne Haskins will be benched in place of Kyle Allen.

As if it couldn't get worse for Haskins, the Washington Football Team announced former one legged QB Alex Smith with be promoted to the #2 spot - backing up Allen.

From starting QB to 3rd stringer over night.

But, dude got paid. He's got that going for him.

Russell Wilson's is NC State's. Wisconsin got him for one year and didn't use him correctly because they cared more about "Wisconsin Football" than they did taking their best shot at ever winning the big one. Greatest QB to ever put on Wisconsin's jersey but they decided to only give him 20 passes a game as if he was John Stocco.

If OSU lays claim to Joe Burrow, I never want to hear a single ounce of crap again about how much Michigan lays claim to Brady.

Joe Burrow was a nobody at OSU. He couldn't even beat out JT Barrett on the depth chart. Knowing what we know now that may be more a product of the system being run at the time vs. who was an inherently better QB. But had Burrow stayed at OSU, he would've remained a nobody, would've probably been passed up by Haskins on the depth chart in 2018, by Fields in 2019, and would probably be starting his career right now selling car insurance somewhere. But he did the smart thing, transferred, found a system that suited his skillset to a T, and now he's set for life (financially) no matter what happens in his career over the next 4-5 years.

OSU did nothing, absolutely nothing, to warrant having any part of Joe Burrow's successes at LSU or any future successes he might have in the NFL.

#1 Burrow graduated from from osu.without his time @ osu he never makes it on LSU's radar. Thats as far as it goes for this buckeye. Meyer watched both in practice for several years. He just loved JT Barret more some reason and allowed that to influence him instead of putting the team first. Barrets performance vs clemson was all I needed to show him the bench. The offense worked better with a good passer, yall saw that in AA in 2017 when haskins came in cold and automatically the offense looked better. I had no idea we had crossing routes in the playbook because barret couldnt throw on time. Meyer surely saw that after 4 years of barret.

He does have a degree from Ohio State.  I'd say he's a Buckeye even if his best year wasn't with OSU.

I know I've heard you guys say a Michigan grad who transferred out would always be a Wolverine.

And OSU fans almost universally cheered for him and didn't refer to him as a traitor/quitter like a previous poster said.  Pretty sure he made that up or cherry picked one dude.

ehh, joe burrow was passed up by haskins in 2017 because he broke his hand in camp and didn't get any reps all of 2017. he was forced into third string by default. he started the 2018 battle to replace jt already behind the 8 ball because of 2017, and transferred before fall camp even began so he could situate himself on a new team for a full season. 2018 lsu burrow v. 2018 osu haskins was no contest. haskins had 50 tds, was a heisman finalist, and a top 10 pick. burrow was just a guy that season for lsu, and on no one's draft radar.

burrow was a victim of bad luck at osu. if he doesn't break his hand, who knows what happens with him and haskins in 2017.

Joe Burrow at osu way behind.  Joe Burrow at Lsu, meh.  Joe Burrow under Joe Brady #1 Draft Pick, led the best offense in CF Hisotry.

So, while Osu can claim some credit.  The on field success goes to the hard work and dedication when learning under Joe Brady.  And for the record without Joe Brady, Lsu's qb this year has a 60% completion rate and hasn't faced a top defense yet... still has Florida, Bama, South Carolina, aTm and auburn to go.

So another OSU QB flames out in the NFL. If anyone was going to break the trend I thought it was Haskins, but hey, tradition is tradition. You love to see it.

Something for NFL teams to consider when evaluating Fields vs Lawrence or Lance?

Clemson > OSU??

Watson > Haskins

NDSU > OSU??

Wentz > Haskins

UM > OSU??

Brady > Haskins

Okay...i'm done...

I'm sorry but this move makes 0.0 sense to me.

If Haskins is flat out dogshit for the rest of the year- great!  You're in the running for the replacement QB of your choice and there is no doubt you need to make the change.

If Haskins figures it out (and news flash - sometimes young QBs - especially those with only one full year of college under their belt do) you've got your QB for the future already on the roster.

Making the change now with the roster the team formally known the Redskins have around him and at BEST you're looking at 6-10, prolly more like 5-11.  And what's the point of doing that?  The best QBs will all be gone by the time you're making the pick.

That may be true and certainly a demotion all the way to 3rd string would indicate that to be the case.  FWIW rumors all over the NFL last year implied he was REALLY struggling to learn the playbook - why, i have no idea.

But I will tell you in the only game this year i watched him play (against my Browns) he definitely made some very "odd" decisions, especially late in the game.

I'll share this short story. Prior to Haskins being drafted two of my co-workers spent a couple of days with Haskins due to a Charity event my company was taking part in. Both of my co-workers know the game well and would provide fair feedback. Both of them independently said Haskins was not going to do well in the NFL and felt sorry for the team that drafted him because he simply wasn't capable upstairs. Take it for what it's worth, but it looks like their assessments were accurate.

I'm not sure if you've watched Haskins this year, but there's no chance he figures it out. He's just flat out bad. It's not a Sam Darnold situation where you see flashes every once in a while and he could have potential with a better supporting cast. Haskins can't make reads and is just plain inaccurate. Turns out when you don't have a whole receiving core of 5 stars playing against college defenses, you have to actually make reads and be accurate

I think as an NFL team this is about the time you have the inflection point in your decision making:

Choice #1 - Do we make a change and see if we can salvage our season given the division we're in?

Choice #2 - Do we give up and tank, trying to see if our QB might play his way out of it or we get a good pick?

In this case they seem to be trying to thread the needle with both because they aren't going to Alex Smith, they're going to another young player.

Same with Fields. Why would you pick an OSU QB? The athleticism doesn't do that much for you in the NFL unless you're a Mike Vick or Lamar Jackson and you've got to be able to pass into tight windows. Passing to a zillion wide open guys in college is not an indicator you'll be any good in in the NFL.

I'd argue that the top QB's in the league and in college all rely on quite a bit of athleticism to be successful. Mahomes, Jackson, Wilson, Watson, Rogers, Fields, Lawrence, and Tua. None of those guys besides Jackson are burners but their athleticism lets them escape the pocket, extend plays and keep defenses honest on a scramble.

This trend obviously helps to project fields as the first QB prospect OSU has had who fits the mold of a good, mobile athlete who is just as good on the run as in the pocket. Haskins was way more of a pocket passer. JT wasn't electric like Lamar or Denard and had a passing ability that fell in between those two.

The one game scouts will probably look at the most when scouting Fields is the Clemson playoff game last year. The first time they had to face a team with equal talent on both sides. Spoiler alert: He wasn't great.

30/46 - 320 yds - 1 TD - 2 INT - 0 yds Rushing

Vs his counterpart Lawrence:

18/38 - 259 yds - 3 TDs (1 rushing) - 0 INT - 107 yds Rushing

We'll see if Fields gets a chance to prove otherwise this year. If we play a conference only schedule I doubt it.

Look at the Lions, Browns (, and Texans). Football is not the sole reason for existence for some of the franchises. It's revenue. And to show a loss for the owner, in case they are making money elsewhere. Drafting the next shiny object gives the fanbase something to chew on, some merchandise to buy. And a convenient scapegoat if things don't go the expected route.

So that's why OSU QBs will keep getting drafted. They have some cache that the NFL teams can use. Plus if they pan out, then the GM is a genius!

Yeah, you don't see a lot of piss poor, vanilla man coverages in the NFL, except when playing the Lions, so maybe they'll let him start again for that one matchup later.

Aa far as the team's fortunes are concerned, they were going to end up 3-13 regardless of starter. They are likely only to beat Detroit and the NYG the rest of the way.
