A bit steep for a declining, aging power hitter, but it's a one year rental.  Not too bad considering that they missed out on Carl Crawford and Adam Dunn at FA market.  It temporarily fills a need for another bat at the FA along with Victor Martinez.

Magglio had a fine close to the last season and from what I understand had some personal issues he dealt with earlier in the year that probably distracted him from baseball(I want to say his wife was sick, but I can't remember).  Especially for a rental, I don't see the downside to this deal.   Now excuse me as I go over into my corner to mourn the fact that my team has a 0% chance at a division title going into the year.

Yes! Maggs is still a .300 hitter even though his power numbers are declining. And 1 year $10mil isnt bad at all in my opinion. Yes its a sign of the times when we call $10 mil fro a declining hitter not bad but I'm glad he's back with Detroit.

The Maggs-Cabrera-Martinez combo gives 3 legitimate .300 hitters along with some nice young stars in A Jax, Bosch, and Wells.

1. A-Jax

2. Gullien

3. Mags

4. Miggy

5. V-Mart

6. Boesch

7.  Peralta

8. Inge

9. Santiago/Sizemore/whoever is playing at 2B

I'm fine with 1-6(providing Boesch can bounce back).  7-9 will need work.

The Tigers will need to find a SP who can pitch in the back end of the rotation.

will play some C because Mags or Guillen will need time off from playing on the field.

If he is DH, then I would put Gullien at 2B and replace whoever is playing at 2B(when V-Mart is a C) with Avila.

Martinez will catch and play 1B at times but he will primarily be DH. Avila will be behind the plate the majority of the games, barring any injury or set backs.

I like this team. Do I think they will make the playoffs? Hopefully but realistically I see them as an 85 win team however you never know and thats why they play the game. It'd be nice with this being Porcello's 3rd season and him bein something like only 22 if he could just come out beastin. The bullpen was a position of strength last season and hopefully SP can catch up.

Go Tigers!

Good solid move, especially considering the alternatives: at least this saves us from having to have 4-way pillowfight/cage-match to fill LF and RF from the likes of clete thomas, casper wells, brennan boesch, ryan raburn and the bloated corpse of carlos guillen.   And I like raburn.

Nice signing.  Not that much money for a year, and it brings some stability to the lineup.  Provided he can stay healthy, another year of .300/.370/.850 with some pop would be huge.

The Tigers are not in a position to let bats walk out the door, even with the addition of Victor Martinez. They also had a major hole in the outfield. The re-signing of Maggs was crucial for them, and they did it the right way: a one year deal.

This way, if Boesch and either of Casper Wells/Ryan Strieby show that they are ready to play everyday in the majors (Boesch has a major adjustment to make and the other two are complete unknowns at the MLB level), then Magglio can be traded next summer. If they aren't ready, we don't need to panic like we did last year at 2B, after we let Polanco walk. We've still got a mess at 2B, but that's another conversation for another day.

Oh, and to rely on Carlos Guillen for anything is dangerous at best.

He didn't get enough at bats in, due to the broken ankle, and the option was declined by the team. The option was for $15 mil.

His contract was a 5-year deal, from 2005-2009 with 2 option years for 2010-2011if he got enough plate appearances. His 2009 plate appearances caused his 2010 option to vest, but in 2010 he didn't get the PA's for the 2011 option to go into effect.

Off the cuff, and upon first glance, I see a lineup more like this:

Jackson CF

Peralta SS

Ordonez RF

Cabrera 1B

Martinez DH

Boesch LF

Inge 3B

Avila C

I think Raburn gets a lot of at bats this year in place of Boesch. I could see those two platooning in LF. Although, if they really want to get Raburn AB's, they'd just move him to 2B and kill two birds with one stone. He was an infielder in the minors. Hopefully Boesch can perform closer to first-half Brennan as opposed to second-half Brennan.

I don't think the Tig's are done quite yet, so that lineup could end up changing a bit. Looks good though. I like Jhonny in the 2-hole.
