A bit steep for a declining, aging power hitter, but it's a one year rental. Not too bad considering that they missed out on Carl Crawford and Adam Dunn at FA market. It temporarily fills a need for another bat at the FA along with Victor Martinez.

Hopefully he doesn't spend the year stealing their money.
December 16th, 2010 at 3:47 PM ^
Magglio had a fine close to the last season and from what I understand had some personal issues he dealt with earlier in the year that probably distracted him from baseball(I want to say his wife was sick, but I can't remember). Especially for a rental, I don't see the downside to this deal. Now excuse me as I go over into my corner to mourn the fact that my team has a 0% chance at a division title going into the year.
December 16th, 2010 at 4:01 PM ^
Not dead yet my friend, always the future for the Braves looms with better times ahead.....
December 16th, 2010 at 4:03 PM ^
so atleast now you will have a skipper making the right calls for the bullpen during the playoffs.
December 16th, 2010 at 7:24 PM ^
was the best mgr of the last 30 years, imo. once wagner got hurt, he didn't have a bullpen.
December 16th, 2010 at 11:06 PM ^
that he only won ONE World Series, and he made the playoffs something crazy like 15 times.
December 16th, 2010 at 5:53 PM ^
You are thinking of the 2009 season- Magglio's wife was battling cancer during the first half of the year and Maggs' play was affected. Second half of the season he was great. Last season, he was solid until he broke his ankle in July, missing the rest of the season.
December 16th, 2010 at 6:00 PM ^
I think Magglio's season ended in the middle of July when he broke his ankle, but he was having a solid season.
December 16th, 2010 at 3:47 PM ^
1yr/$10mil is better than the 2yr/$20mil they'd been talking about for the past week. I'm fine with it.
December 16th, 2010 at 3:52 PM ^
Pretty much echo this post. As long as they kept it from multiple years it's not that bad a deal.
December 16th, 2010 at 4:02 PM ^
Apparently he declined multi-year options at other clubs to come back to Detroit, good to see him back in the old english D. Somehow Scott Boras didn't get the best of the Tigers this year.
December 16th, 2010 at 4:31 PM ^
Derek Jeter's ridiculous contract especially given the fact that he is declining big time both offensively and defensively.
December 16th, 2010 at 9:02 PM ^
And it's a hell of a lot better than Werth's contract. The Nationals are crazy.
December 16th, 2010 at 3:50 PM ^
1 year deal for Maggs is perfect. He's still got a year left in his bat.
December 16th, 2010 at 4:04 PM ^
Grow out your hair Sampson...longer than before. Restore your power.
December 16th, 2010 at 4:10 PM ^
come to Anaheim.
It's been a while since I've seen them live.
Magglio is a good player. i think he'll do well in Detroit.
December 16th, 2010 at 4:28 PM ^
Yes! Maggs is still a .300 hitter even though his power numbers are declining. And 1 year $10mil isnt bad at all in my opinion. Yes its a sign of the times when we call $10 mil fro a declining hitter not bad but I'm glad he's back with Detroit.
The Maggs-Cabrera-Martinez combo gives 3 legitimate .300 hitters along with some nice young stars in A Jax, Bosch, and Wells.
December 16th, 2010 at 4:29 PM ^
After this...
I couldn't care less about how many millions of dollars of someone else's money he gets, I just want him around.
December 17th, 2010 at 12:01 AM ^
Definitely huge moment for the Tigers and getting back into the drivers seat.
December 16th, 2010 at 4:35 PM ^
Maggs at 3, VMart at 5 - much more difficult to navigate compared with Boesch at 3 and Guillen at 5. Hope for health
December 16th, 2010 at 4:44 PM ^
1. A-Jax
2. Gullien
3. Mags
4. Miggy
5. V-Mart
6. Boesch
7. Peralta
8. Inge
9. Santiago/Sizemore/whoever is playing at 2B
I'm fine with 1-6(providing Boesch can bounce back). 7-9 will need work.
The Tigers will need to find a SP who can pitch in the back end of the rotation.
December 16th, 2010 at 5:25 PM ^
sorry to ruin that for you but VMart is primarily gonna DH, as such gotta get avila in there, and probably add Guillen to a combo with Santiago/Sizemore/Rhymes.
December 16th, 2010 at 5:33 PM ^
will play some C because Mags or Guillen will need time off from playing on the field.
If he is DH, then I would put Gullien at 2B and replace whoever is playing at 2B(when V-Mart is a C) with Avila.
December 17th, 2010 at 1:52 AM ^
Martinez will catch and play 1B at times but he will primarily be DH. Avila will be behind the plate the majority of the games, barring any injury or set backs.
I like this team. Do I think they will make the playoffs? Hopefully but realistically I see them as an 85 win team however you never know and thats why they play the game. It'd be nice with this being Porcello's 3rd season and him bein something like only 22 if he could just come out beastin. The bullpen was a position of strength last season and hopefully SP can catch up.
Go Tigers!

over Boesch. Brennan has major swing problems to work through
December 16th, 2010 at 4:36 PM ^
Good solid move, especially considering the alternatives: at least this saves us from having to have 4-way pillowfight/cage-match to fill LF and RF from the likes of clete thomas, casper wells, brennan boesch, ryan raburn and the bloated corpse of carlos guillen. And I like raburn.
December 16th, 2010 at 5:29 PM ^
One year rental, hopefully Boesch or Wells can step up soon or Dombrowski needs to make a trade or sign someone good next year
December 16th, 2010 at 5:47 PM ^
It'll be great to see Maggs play at least one more year in the D.
December 16th, 2010 at 5:56 PM ^
Nice signing. Not that much money for a year, and it brings some stability to the lineup. Provided he can stay healthy, another year of .300/.370/.850 with some pop would be huge.
December 16th, 2010 at 6:25 PM ^
The Tigers are not in a position to let bats walk out the door, even with the addition of Victor Martinez. They also had a major hole in the outfield. The re-signing of Maggs was crucial for them, and they did it the right way: a one year deal.
This way, if Boesch and either of Casper Wells/Ryan Strieby show that they are ready to play everyday in the majors (Boesch has a major adjustment to make and the other two are complete unknowns at the MLB level), then Magglio can be traded next summer. If they aren't ready, we don't need to panic like we did last year at 2B, after we let Polanco walk. We've still got a mess at 2B, but that's another conversation for another day.
Oh, and to rely on Carlos Guillen for anything is dangerous at best.
December 16th, 2010 at 7:03 PM ^
to sign him to only one year. smart move #2 would be to move him to LF. Boesch has way more ability in RF and can cover a lot more ground.
December 16th, 2010 at 8:18 PM ^
What happened to that player option he had that would be triggered if he recorded enough at-bats? Wasn't it worth more than $10M?
December 16th, 2010 at 8:22 PM ^
Yeah, but he broke his ankle and missed ended up missing out on that. It was worth $15m or so.
December 16th, 2010 at 8:23 PM ^
He didn't get enough at bats in, due to the broken ankle, and the option was declined by the team. The option was for $15 mil.
His contract was a 5-year deal, from 2005-2009 with 2 option years for 2010-2011if he got enough plate appearances. His 2009 plate appearances caused his 2010 option to vest, but in 2010 he didn't get the PA's for the 2011 option to go into effect.
December 17th, 2010 at 12:02 AM ^
And IIRC helped the Tigers avoid a messy decision of limiting at-bats to save money.
December 16th, 2010 at 8:30 PM ^
December 16th, 2010 at 8:52 PM ^
Maggs is a good hitter.
December 16th, 2010 at 10:33 PM ^
Off the cuff, and upon first glance, I see a lineup more like this:
Jackson CF
Peralta SS
Ordonez RF
Cabrera 1B
Martinez DH
Boesch LF
Inge 3B
Avila C
The mess that is 2B
December 16th, 2010 at 10:59 PM ^
I think Raburn gets a lot of at bats this year in place of Boesch. I could see those two platooning in LF. Although, if they really want to get Raburn AB's, they'd just move him to 2B and kill two birds with one stone. He was an infielder in the minors. Hopefully Boesch can perform closer to first-half Brennan as opposed to second-half Brennan.
I don't think the Tig's are done quite yet, so that lineup could end up changing a bit. Looks good though. I like Jhonny in the 2-hole.
December 17th, 2010 at 12:34 AM ^
Peralta hitting in the two hole. He is a career .264 hitter with a low OBP. I prefer him hitting at 7th or 8th spot.
