OT: Detroit 105.1 dropping sports talk programming
Detroit sports talk is now complete and utter garbage.
WDFN still hasn't bled out yet and are still hanging around. No idea who is on that station.
In other news, WTKA is your go-to option!

Major news out of Detroit. Greater Media has confirmed they are exiting the sports format on 105.1. The sports staff were informed on Wednesday night in a staff meeting that the radio station would air a temporary simulcast of Classic Rock WCSX’s Oldies format until a new format is officially announced. 105.1 made the flip into the sports format in August 2013.
“The change comes after much careful consideration of the direction of the station’s format and overall ratings over the past three years,” said VP and Market Manager Steve Chessare. “We would like to thank our dedicated listeners and the entire Detroit Sports 105.1 staff for their many contributions to the station in the Motor City. They are true professionals and we are very grateful to them.”
the entire industry of sports talk radio, and sports talk in general, is a cesspool
Cbs radio has a good weekend line up like Mark Malusis, Gregg Gianotto, and John Kilcade (my favorite)
I like Freddy Coleman on ESPN radio but I think he's at 11pm these days. Jacoby and Jalen are pretty good
He's good to listen to in the evenings if I'm on the road and can't pick up the Tigers. I thought he was still on in the evenings, but maybe they switched up recently. If so, that's unfortunate.
Does Eric Allen still do radio? I don't listen anymore but he used to do a lot and I liked him.
No more Jalen and Jacoby :(
i completely agree. i don't know how people listen to sports talk radio. i love sports. i love talk radio, but the two combined is horrible.
"I don't know how people listen," either, but it has to be better than trying to listen to an mlive podcast. I'm sure the content is OK, but someone has to tell them how to make it listenable. Maybe Sam should give them some lessons.
I've never listen to the mlive podcast. pretty bad huh? i will listen to wtka a little during the season, but I can only handle so much of Ira , or the caller's for that matter.
Try The Two Mikes (or Hawksbee & Jacobs) on TalkSport. It's English, which could be a problem for some, and they don't know what college football is, but still ...
Dan Patrick show is awesome. Rich Eisen is good and so is Jay Mohr.

WTKA is good for 4 hours in the morning. That is all.
Do you mean the four hours when they don't talk sports?
Edit: Wait, maybe that's not WTKA.
Despite Sean Baligian being a hockey and MSU guy, I considered him to be one of the best in the business. This hurts for those of us that don't want to listen to the travesty that is Stoney, Bill and Sarah in the morning.
Never really disagreed with him that much nor thought he was a Sparty homer, but I just got tired of him constantly starting the invisible arguments about not being a homer and trying to be funny. I prefer the new guy , Jim Costas more
His schtick was to tell everyone how he wasn't a spartan slappy while actually, you know, acting exactly like a spartan slappy.
how he's not trying to be this, or not trying to say that, or not being a db, or yada yada yada. Just talk!
that guy sucks. unless you happen to love the OHL and the Montreal Canadiens and shitting on every Michigan pro sports team.
I prefer Mark. Hope he finds a place. Smart and intelligent and can converse in both the sport and non sport world
But it felt like they were pushing too much a subject that most people don't want to hear. I don't care for the Montreal Canadiens and his man crush on them. Even with that, I'd still listen to how Jacque Demers is still a hero in Montreal over the noise coming from 97.1.
actually. Fine, not great, but Bill is sometimes amusing. You are incorrect.
They don't talk sports though. They aren't funny or intertaining. And I really liked the morning show at 105.1. This morning's drive sucked once Dave and Chuck went to commercial.
I was so happy when Baligian left 96.1 in Grand Rapids. Could not stand listening to his awful voice and propensity to repeat himself 47 times, let alone his constant insistence that he wasn't a Sparty slappy. It was so bad I actually listened to Simonson! (drink Miller Lite, go to Celebration Cinema, eat at Brann's!)
"Now, I've been saying this for years... " He has like 3 opinions that he just repeats on every show:
1) Recruiting Rankings don't matter because rivals gave Braylon edwards a star bump when he commited to michigan
2) Matthew Stafford is a good but not elite QB. He "is what he is".
3) "I'm not a slappy" - and that whiney voice he uses when he imitates people complaining about him being a slappy. I hate that voice.
Spot on with Stoney, Bill, and Sarah. They always talk about things that are not even sports-related. No, I don't give a shit what your favorite movie or candy is. Baligian sucks too though, especially when he goes to his voice that sounds like Jesse Ventura or uses cliches that aren't quite right like, "for all intensive purposes" or "wrecking havoc."
I can't stand 97.1's morning show, especially when they get political. Bill tries to hard to be Limbaugh.
Never was a "die-hard" fan of 105.1, but was nice to at least have some choice on talk radio, especially since I've commuted for over an hour for about two years.
As far as what caused their demise, really think it was the lack of a long-term vision. To start, the constant shifts in programming didn't do them any favors. There had to be at least three major lineup shifts in the last year and a half, which is never a good sign.
On top of that, they had way too much NBA discussion and too many bland personalities. Should have tried some shots in the dark on some wildcards instead of hiring a whole bunch of people who just recycled national hot takes.
I can't handle much of the idiocy that is sports talk radio, but I didn't think the midday Ryan & Rico show was too bad, better that Karsch and Anderson IMO.
However, the afternoon drive time slot was an ABSOLUTE disaster, Matt Dery and Drew Sharp had to be the worst radio pairing in the country. Recently Lindsey Hunter, and Braylon have had short stints.
Overall, not a big loss.
Dery should have been allowed to do the afternoon drive show by himself. At least he talked about sports. I don't get why they thought Drew Sharp needed to employs there. Karsch and Anderson isn't a good show. Valenti and Foster is even worse now that they decided to make those awful songs they play out of each break. What was 105.1 expecting?
I couldn't fathom 105.1, nor could I really listen to 97.1 without shaking my head at the state of sports talk radio in Detroit. WTKA is my AM go-to, but then there is a chasm there to fill after mid-morning.
I'll probably just crank up the music after Insider - no harm in subjecting the people in the cubicles near me to a little more INXS.
The thing is, as much as we bitch about 97.1, they are way way better than most sports talk stations nationwide. Which is a very scary thought.
If 97.1 are that "good" then sports talk radio nationwide is garbage. A rare Tigers' game aside; I haven't listened to 97.1 in a few years. I just listen to podcasts instead.
That's not even close to true.
Oh. Well okay then!
From a ratings standpoint it is true, at least as far as the drive time slot goes.
LSA, fill that void with podcasts. Generally no or few commercials and targeted content.
Aren't they the official radio station of the lions now?

Sports radio just isn't good...105.1 was better than 97.1 mostly but I get my fix from podcasts. Infinitely superior, on topic and subject matter focused.
Sports radio has too much filler crap and contrived controversy re: 97.1 Valenti
They are already playing oldies.
If you want good radio during the offseason, tune in to 101.1 weekday mornings. Other than that I've got nothing.
I thought those morning guys were getting better. The morning group of 7-10 with Marc and Belegian (so?) were kind of catching their stride. Sort of a welcome change from the long summer days of Wtka. I love Wtka but, with Sam out, it is really rough. I liked 105.1 in the morning. I think they crapped the bed when the got rid of drew and Marc.
Sam is back in studio.
Now if he could only stop bitching about American Airlines....ha

To be fair what he went through with American Airlines I would only wish on Mike Valenti.
What's hilarious is something similar happened to a friend of mine from church, not that extreme but only received half of his baggage and the other piece went to Dallas or something.
Anyway, because of Sam'so story, I specifically asked which airline it was. His reply? "American Airlines." I laughed hysterically and informed him that he's not the only one with that problem lately.
Maybe that is a good thing.
I think 105.1 killed themselves. They were bad pretty much no matter the time slot. Barely made it three years in a five year plan
Drew? Guys, where's Drew?

that the Edge went off the air 17 years ago.
Me too. That Easter Sunday drive from Grand Blanc to Beverly Hills to pick up my aunt was brutally disappointing when I turned on theEdge and it was oldies. That station came in clear in the GB/Fenton area and was awesome.
