OT - Cool Story Bro
Please be gentle as this is my first topic thread. I live in Ohio and every other year one of my friends organizes a bus trip to a Cincinnati Reds game. Its all out as we have a charter bus, get a suite, etc. The game wound up being a rain delay and eventually postponed, but even so, they still had a ceremony for the 25th anniversary of the 1990 World Series Champions team. Our suite wound up being next to the suite for the team from 1990 so all of the players from the team walked past our suite and we got to shake hands with most of them and some even stopped in our suite to drink beer. Some of you will remember the Nasty Boys and they passed by as well, some of which stopped to talk to us. Long story short, I approached Barry Larkin and made it clear I was probably the only Michigan fan in the stadium and asked for his autograph and he obliged. I asked if he has spoken with Harbaugh and he said he has. Just thought it was a cool story to pass along. Go Blue.

A cool story. I remember the 1990 Reds.

I lived in Dayton at the time. When the Reds won the series in a sweep over the A's, we all went down to Cincinnati to be part of the street party that was centered around the "WKRP" fountain.

Bro, Story Cool.

Yeah outside of the 1985 Bears (the Bears are my NFL team) they were one of the more noticeable teams in terms of personality (Rob Dibble, Randy Myers, Norm Charlton). Not taking anything away from the great Detroit Pistons teams with Laimbeer, Thomas, Mahorn, but the 90s Reds team was pretty identifiable with the personas on that team.

Played on the same UM team as Larkin.

and Larkin talk about?
April 25th, 2015 at 11:44 PM ^
Didn't find out what they talked about. You could tell with Larkin's fame and security that he wasn't going to stick around and chat so I had a limited window to speak with him, basically the amount of time for him to sign the Nasty Boys bobblehead I had for him to sign.
April 25th, 2015 at 11:47 PM ^
Nothing beats not really having a good item to sign, so you hand him a bobble head of other dudes to sign. Tough situation, but in the end you got to say fuck it and get that autograph on anything.

How much fame and security does Barry Larkin have these days? I would imagine he could walk by half the people in the stadium and they might not know who he was.

I doubt that, most people in Cincy know exactly what he looks like

And I don't mean that to be a dick or that it's not cool that you met him, I would just think he has the time and should be down to earth enough to at least let you chat him up a bit. Especially for a fellow Michigan guy

I just think that you need to realize that Larkin is probably harassed or asked to 'chat" about a lot of people. At some point it has to get real old.
People need to stop thinking that famous people owe them their time because they "paid their salary". Please.
but I don't think that was his point. Larkin is Larkin. Heck, Kramer are donuts with DiMaggio & knocked out Mantle. Larkin is no Mantle! Bo agreed. Only kinda /s
ate, not are. jokes ruined ha

Larkin looked like he could still play today,

FTW!
Harbaugh with the first O-Lineman that misses his block, and allows a sack.

but being a baseball fan, I do appreciate that they were World Champs and envy you for having had a chance to meet some of them. Especially Barry Larkin.
Indeed a "cool story, bro" moment!

sweet tale chap

he said something about playing for Bo and kicking the crap out of Ohio State. This was booed of course.
Honest question...he was a two sport athlete or is he referring to the Bo trickle down effect?

Recruited by Bo to play football--was a star safety in high school. Was redshirted freshman year and then decided to play baseball only. Of course Bo wasn't thrilled about that, but I guess he did technically play a season.
I use to date a girl who's dad was a former reds player and then a coach for them when I was dating her. I'm not a baseball fan but he asked if their was anyone's autograph I wanted. I said sure Larkin's. he said he doesn't usually sign a lot of things. a few weeks later I was down on the field before the game and my gf dad brought Barry over. I began to immediately talk about being a UM fan and about his time there. he then signed a ball and handed it to me and said "Go Blue" as he jogged off.
Who has seen Dennis norfleet IG tonight ? Some real drama lol
His account is private. What's happening.

Don't wanna get into specifics on here but his account has been hacked by a baby mama. You can imagine where that went.
It's not hackers. It's people having basic or easy to figure out passwords.
Crap. You mean "password" isn't a good one?
There goes my Swiss bank account.

The term "hacker" has evolved to mean simply logging into another personas account without their permission.
My luggage password from 1-2-3-4-5.
My uncle played baseball with Barry at Michigan. I think they still occasionally keep in touch over the phone. My uncle was pretty close with Hal Morris too.
I'm a huge Reds and Michigan fan so Larkin is easily my favorite baseball player ever. I went to Cooperstown for his induction a few years ago and got his autograph in A2 when I was a freshman. Winter of 1991 after they won the series Larkin, Morris and Sabo came for some type of recognition ceremony. Don't remember how I found out they were going to be there but me and a couple of buddies stood out in front of the athletic complex on South State and waited for them to show up. Barry was surprised there were Reds fans in Michigan but all three signed hats and balls.
It has been a long time since that amazing season and I fear it will be a lot longer until the Reds win another championship. Oh yeah, I'll end with this. Had tickets to Game 6 of the 1990 World Series that did not end up being used.

Well played indeed. Nothing quite that romantic though. Reds swept the A's.
It's crazy to think of a Wolverine infield that had both Chris Sabo and Barry Larkin.
but wasn't part of that because of recruiting violations?
Hal Morris was on that team too. It was an incredible infield--probalby the best ever for M-Baseball.
the NCAA violations under Middaugh involved paying the players illegally for their jobs, but not necessarily recuriting violations.
Larkin-Sabo-Morris was indeed an incredible infield.
