OT: Chicken Broccoli Bake

Submitted by UMVAFAN on December 21st, 2022 at 9:33 PM

Someone joked in the Jyaire Hill “Hello” post that “Chicken Broccoli Bake doesn’t lie” when commenting on on Jyaire’s fondness for Ann Arbor food. This prompted me to search for Chicken Broccoli Bake on Google to see if it’s still being served in the dorms, and stumbled on something major. I’m not sure why UM Housing approved the release of a trade secret like the recipe to Chicken Broccoli Bake, but I thought it was thread worthy to post it for the group: https://kb.housing.umich.edu/hc/en-us/articles/360018571692-Chicken-Broccoli-Bake-

I’ve been having trouble figuring out what to serve for Christmas dinner, but I think I found a winner! Enjoy!

I have a HS senior who is in the application process for UofM.  After he visited campus, the thing he talked about most was the dorm cafeterias and the availability of "unlimited swipes" at Michigan.

He's been to a lot of schools and I assume that at some point, all of the schools of a certain caliber are very similar on most of the really important characteristics, but that a few specific things standout at one particular school versus the others.

Sounds better than the "sushi bake" my rebel Instagram loving sister-in-law made for Thanksgiving.

Alas, no green bean casserole was served as a result of that terrible impromptu decision.

Here's how you make it:

First, take someone who thinks all sushi shouldn't be raw and would taste better cooked (as if sushi would be appropriate for Thanksgiving anyway);

Combine that with someone who spends too much time on social media and thinks they know what normal people like;

Then coat liberally with indifference to tradition by replacing her assigned dish (green bean casserole) without telling anyone.

She's also the type who will microwave a medium rare prime bone in ribeye for 10 minutes after its been sous vide and seared perfectly. Tragic.

This sounds like a horrible person!  You should refuse to acknowledge her family membership until she cleans up her act.  You're brother (or sister - NTTAWWT), too should suffer these consequences for his/her act of family defiance in marrying someone so off.]

This is unacceptable family dynamics at play!

Went to university of Oklahoma.  We had freeto chili topped with cheeses and onions.  It was surprisingly awesome.  I make it to this day using my chili that o learned in Oklahoma; yeah, I stole that recipe.

Ps.  If there are beans it isn’t a chili!!!

I’ve printed this one out. We are definitely having this!

Mid ‘80’s in Alice Lloyd. I enjoyed watching the progression of certain food items. Grilled cheese sandwiches were cut up and served as croutons the next day. Chicken patties were cut up and served as a salad topping. Baked potatoes were mashed for day two. Chicken patties were my favorite menu item.

Costco does the same thing with rotisserie chicken. The next day it becomes a giant chicken pot pie, which is damn good and the very definition of comfort food.

And after hearing the idea for recycling grilled cheese, I keep imagining a big bowl of tomato soup with cheese-filled croutons in it. I've certainly heard worse ideas.

I've made it using this article/recipe, I think because it's been mentioned here before and who doesn't like a good casserole? I don't remember it from the dorm, though.

Currently living in a dorm at U of M - Ann Arbor; don't think they are serving it anymore as I have not seen it once at Markley, or any of the other dining halls I've eaten at.

An absolute CLASSIC.

I believe a friend was able to get someone in dining services to share the recipe with him many years ago, but the fact that it is now fully public is amazing. Said friend may have even concocted an ode to the Bake.

Definitely on the menu this winter. All hail Chicken Broccoli Bake.

That made me think of chik-fil-a's "hot brown". I'm not certain if they have the actual dwarf houses outside of Georgia or not, but you should be able to order a hot brown at more than just the original hapeville Georgia location (it may be on their secret menu, so ask) . If you're ever dining in, it's a good way to start the day if you don't suffer an immediate coronary.

The only hot brown I'd had in Michigan was at Mr. Burger (GR folks know!) and it was... a thick slice of lunchmeat on two sad pieces of white toast. Tasted fine, but not life changing.

Then on my bachelor party weekend our Bourbon Trail guide took us to a diner near Louisville and told us we'd better try the hot brown.

Some meals are gifts from heaven, and that moment with that group of friends and that sloppy plate of bread, meat, and gravy was about as perfect as meals get. Wish I could remember more of it.

I am a survivor of the dorms at Michigan State. I don't remember any of the food being good. There was a turkey tetrazinni that I remember being particularly disgusting.

My only food-positive memories of Bursely Hall involve the donut-making machine they had.

I also remember grabbing four or five slices of cake at a time and just eating the frosting off the top.

Was that wrong? Should I feel badly?
