I have to believe this was a “you can step down with your dignity intact, or we’ll remove you ourselves” kind of call.

For as good as a program as Syracuse was when I was growing up, it seems like especially in the last ten years they’re just a shell of what they used to be. They sprinkled in a few good tourney runs and another Final Four in the last 5-7 years, but it just still seemed like a slow, but certain match downhill for the program overall.

Will be curious to see what kind of coach they can get. They should be able to recruit a pretty good one to come up there. Syracuse isn’t what it was, but it has the cache as a program to one day get there again.

He definitely overstayed his welcome by about 5 years.  Seemed to turn into a bit of an angry and defiant old man at the end.  Probably would have never left on his own, so not sure what good option  Syracuse had other than to basically tell him “it’s time.”

He’s 78 years old, which is old enough to conclude it’s time to step down. If he’d had any self-awareness, he’d have looked at his last decade’s work and realized that it was a downward trend. Because his ego is apparently what drives his decision-making, he forced Syracuse into the uncomfortable position of forcing him out.

For crissakes, even John Wooden voluntarily retired at the age of 64, even though he could have coached forever at UCLA.

I know he coached there for a very, very long time - but, there’s a feeling I have of underachievement, if that makes sense.

He had a lot of talent over the years, and his NC is not to be understated.

As other point out, the move from the Big East to the ACC, IIRC - the first big change in conference membership / expansion - has had an ongoing impact on the college playing field - which is candidly something I do not care for.   All thanks to the ACC.

FUN FACT: At graduation ceremonies at Syracuse University in May 2006, Dave Bing received an honorary degree for business. Among the other recipients of honorary degrees from Syracuse that day was Billy Joel who gave the special commencement speech. LINK
