OT: Bob Stitt fired at Montanta

Submitted by Maizen on

Rough business: Bob Stitt goes 7-4 at Montana and gets fired after just 3 seasons after taking over a program that was on probation & digging out from ugly scandal.

Couldn't hurt to hire him as an analyst or something.

Looking at Montana's roster, they do seem to get a lot of transfers for nearby JCs, so I can see how that could disrupt your program building if you aren't recruiting all that well.  I have no idea about Montana's recruiting situation, but programs have the right to look at a guy and see if it's a good fit or not, and if it's not I'd rather they make a move than waste everyone's time.  Stitt will wind up on some staff soon enough.

Wait, there's a college in Montana? I thought only 37 people and a bunch of cattle lived in that state.

I spend a lot of time in Montana for work, unfortunately. Standards are pretty high there and they take their football at least as seriously as B1G folks although obviously the quality is comparable to your average MAC team. Cats and Griz is pretty heated stuff. Montana does have a fairly rich football history for the modern era but they've been stuck in a bit of a 4 loss type cylce for the last decade. It's traditionally pretty good FCS football. They've won probably about 15 conference title and a pair of national championships in the last 30 years.

Stitt did not make the playoffs the last 2 years and he didn't beat Montana State either so that 7-4 would be considered an unsuccessful season. The FCS schools are off the media radar  but there is still a lot of pressure within their local areas and coaches get canned just as quickly. No sense that the program was improving under him.

Well, I mean you've got your occasonal small town methheads and such. But these are good folk, they don't get high. If I were to make up a completely unfounded inaccurate statistic, I think I can safely say that 93 percent of Montanans are alcoholics. It helps to dull the aching pain of lives lived among cattle. So yeah, definitely err towards the shoulder when driving those two lane highways at night.

Washington Grizzly Stadium gives most stadiums a run for their money. It was just as loud when the griz where up 50 on MVSU as that shit hole the shoe was on 4 down in overtime vs Michigan.

That is a tough job. You are expected to win 9 games a year, make the playoffs, beat MSU each year. They have had great success, have a rabid fan base, great stadium. It is tough though in that the competition has grown stronger in the Big Sky conference and they had some internal issues that led to dismissal of one coach. Stitt was a bit of an outsider though, and like Michigan and Rich Rod was never quite accepted as such I think.

He did not seem to be well-liked in Missoula. Almost like the RR situation in Ann Arbor. He did not recruit locally and did not schmooze the local high school coaches. He was not great with boosters either. They were always lukewarm about him which I thought surprising based on how Brian pumped him up. I thought Stitt would use this as a stepping stone to FBS, and he might have thought that too. But he never could get his defense good and did not win enough to get a longer opportunity. Sound familiar?

If you can't schmooze at the FCS level, then you shouldn't be at the FBS level.

Part of being a head coach is schmoozing the locals, boosters, and coaches. If you want to just run an offense, be a coordinator. Otherwise, you better win big a la Saban and Meyer.
