Seems like a good deal
Detroit traded Isaac Peredes (appeared in 57 games over 2 years) and a "Competitive Balance Round B Draft" pick (whatever that is).
Detroit got a proven player and Tampa got... not much. Makes you wonder, but we don't know what the Tampa farm system looks like.
Well, this is a surprise. Proven major league outfielder with three years of control. For a guy who is an AAAA player and a draft pick.
Since we're talking Tigers, how about Skubal's outing today? He's got all the tools. He will be a Cy Young contender during his career.
And the draft pick comes from MLB, not the Tigers.
I love the AAAA designation. Excellent descriptor of those AAA bashers who just can't catch their groove in the bigs. Paredes may go all Eugenio Suarez in a different uniform, but this feels like a good move.
BTW, your Bees convincingly dismantled Chelsea last weekend. Nice W for them.
The Braves sent outfielder Christian Pache to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for All-Star first baseman Matt Olson. Pache was a AAAA player for us – he could mash AAA pitching but had trouble with MLB pitch movement.
Also, Oakland unloaded salary – like they regularly do.
If Paredes goes all Eugenio in Tampa Bay, at least we got Meadows. For Suarez we got...wait for it...Alfredo Simon. Yikes.
It was a very nice win for the Bees at Stamford Bridge. Though Chelsea is in a pretty weird place with the whole Abramovich thing.
Love the trade. Just makes me nervous that it was the Rays. They usually know something other teams don't.
This is exactly my thought. Rays will have Paredes an all-star in 2 years and then he'll be a Yankee the year after that.
Even if that's true, the Tigers track record of developing (non 1st round) position players is abysmal. There is high likelihood he would not be an all star if he stayed.
There is some recent hope on the player development front. Skubal was 9th Round. Soto was a nobody international signing. This kid Brieske will be up this year and I think he was a 27th round pick.
Paredes is exactly the type of hitter we don’t have enough of, high contact and will actually draw or take a walk. Sad to see him go, but Meadows has a lot of tools.
Would be cool to see him with his brother.
Dealing with the Rays makes me nervous too…
Are you thinking of another Paredes perhaps? I see no downside in this deal, especially if Riley Greene is out for a minute. The Rays got a draft pick, which they do more with than any team in baseball. They have a young outfield and have guys they like more, Kiermaier is a stud, Arozarena is a future star, and Margot is a really good player. I believe they just hand more outfielders than they had spots for them.,
Kiemaier a stud? He's 30--and batted 232 over the past 4 years with decreasing homers and SBs. Platoon player.
The Rays do stuff like this all the time under the "never lose a guy for nothing" principal. They needed a roster spot for Josh Lowe, so they dumped Meadows (and his $4M salary) for a dude they can stash in the minors.
it may have been a numbers game for the rays. they have so many prospects, they have had difficulty managing their 40 man numbers. not sure where they stand at the moment though.
I like the move a lot.
I could see Meadows hitting about .250 with 20 home runs, 25 doubles, and 5-10 stolen bases.
Most projections have him at .250 with 24-26 homers, so that is definitely doable.
Wow, wasn't expecting this. Nice middle of the order hitter than can smash right hand pitching and doesn't break the bank even in arby. I would guess he slides in right behind Baez in the line-up. Good move Avila.
Slightly OT to this OT thread, but what free Tigers blogs do you guys find useful? Hard to keep up on the team scoop remotely. TIA
I always turn to Bless You Boys for Tigers info - https://www.blessyouboys.com/
Motor City Bengals is good as well - https://motorcitybengals.com/
Thanks for the tip on those blogs. In light of the Austin Meadows move, this article from MCB is kind of funny. The money quote: "The Detroit Tigers need to avoid all external options when looking to replace Riley Greene."
Agree with Bless you Boys, good content.
Yes, 'Bless You Boys' is the much better of the two, the writing is very good-to-excellent, much more in-depth than anything on 'Motor City Bengels'.
That said, MCB is actually better than the other 'Fansided' websites or anything from 'The Spun' (Sports Illustrated's online tabloid). MCB has a couple writers who actually write halfway decent articles---not MGoFrontPage quality, but at least informative.
Outfield is going to be very exciting once Greene comes back.
Plus don't forget Derek Hill. I've been hoping for a future outfield of Badoo, Greene and Hill where every flyball is an automatic out.
Meadows is a great pickup though. At worst you have an average mlb of but he still has his upside of 30 plus hr potential.
And only one year after this year of Miggys contract
I honestly love this trade. While I do not know too much about the Rays, I do know enough that they are smart with their roster management and talent.
As for Detroit, Paredes was blocked from the big leagues because of Candy and Baez. Plus they have Kreidler sitting in Toledo and drafted Izaac Pacheco in last years draft. So Paredes became a man without a spot, so instead of letting him bounce back and forth between Detroit and Toledo, they traded him (and a comp pick) for a legit MLB outfielder that so happens to be a lefty to help balance the lineup? That's smart roster management.
Now they are putting together a very nice Outfield core with Badoo, Greene, Grossmen, Hill, and Meadows
Excited for this year, but I am on the same page as most "experts" in the Tigers are still a year away from challenging for the playoffs..... Tork, Greene, Mize, Skubal, and Manning just need some major league seasoning....
Rays probably were looking to move Meadows because his defensive metrics were quite bad last year and he can't hit lefties. He's probably questionable as a full time OF defensively.
That being said, the Tigers could use some power, and he's not a FA till 2025. Meadows has proven MLB power.
Padreas was a DH type with a good eye and moderate power. Fangraphs has him ticketed as a platoon-level player in MLB.
The way Meadows hits lefties, he might better as a platoon guy too. His career numbers vs RHP are quite good: .271/.351/.875.
I could see Meadows being the right-side platoon with Victor Reyes once Green is back. If the Tigers limit his exposure to lefties he could put up pretty solid numbers.
