OT: Are you watching sports?

Submitted by DCGrad on August 3rd, 2020 at 11:08 PM

Question for the board. With the NBA, NHL, and MLB back playing games, how much time do you all spend watching?

I’ve never been a big NBA or MLB fan, but I’ve tuned into a little bit of baseball.  Haven’t watched any NBA or NHL.

I guess there are international soccer leagues playing as well, but I haven’t watched any of those either.

I've watched a ton of Redbull Soapbox(derby.) It's on FoxSports2, normally early in the morning. A bunch of wanna-be engineers create soapbox derby cars, but they have suspensions and steering. There are obstacles along the way, so only the strong survive.

Even if the games are played, I'm not watching any of it. It's all too politicized right now. Only thing I'm watching is Lucas Oil Pro Motocross. Can Eli Tomac 4-peat? I think, yes.

Glad folks are expressing their first amendment rights. Should result in positive change. There is more going on than that and I’d rather spend what limited free time I have doing something other than watch sports right now. Thanks, though, for attempting to make me out to be less than quality human being.

The only ones I’ve watched with regularity are soccer and golf. Watched a couple NHL games the past few days and they’ve been good. NBA seems stale right now and I’m a big basketball fan. Watched the first few Tigers games but once it became clear that baseball was teetering on a precipice, I decided to not get invested

I’ve watched some baseball and soccer. Mostly just watching baseball so I don’t go crazy watching the news and opinion shows.

The piped in crowd noise at the baseball games is odd. And what’s the point of the organist doing the, “duh duh duh daaaaa” thing when there’s no one to yell, “CHAAAAAARGE!”

I haven’t watched hardly anything. I saw two holes of the Golf tournament in Detroit.

This is going to be a big risk for sports. The longer the fans are away, the more likely many will not come back. Fans will lose interest.

Been playing a lot of Warzone, k/d really going through the roof. Until my Xbox has hurt me emotionally as much as my sports teams have, I won't be tuning in. Sports right now just feel super forced

Watched the EPL until that ended. Watched the Bundesliga until that ended. Been watching the MLS Is Back tourney, some really great games and crazy upsets. I truly could not care less about hockey without the Wings. Been watching the Tigers here and there

Also, I never thought I’d say this, but I actually preferred hearing the piped in crowd noise. MLS has been on Fox (fake crowd noise) and ESPN (all natural) and the Fox broadcast feels more “real” despite being objectively more artificial. But it could just be that I’m subconsciously responding positively to not having to listen to Taylor Twellman.

Nope. I tuned into a little bit of the Tigers early on but I just am not interested.

Surprised because I thought I'd be invested when sports came back even at the pro level. I said I would watch anything back in April but now I'm just cool binge watching on netflix with my girlfriend all the time. Maybe I'll get Last Chance U's new season going to start the engine if we do have a season somehow.

Watched Premiere League a bunch and watched the FA Cup.  Watch golf as much as I can before falling asleep because I’m watching golf.  Took in a few baseball games but I only really watch a couple Tigers games a week in normal times so.  Don’t watch NBA until late in the playoffs.

Im a hockey guy so yea, I’ve been watching a ton of hockey. Happier that’s back, even without my Red Wings, than MLB it NBA.

EDIT: oh and some Australian rules football, MMA and lacrosse.

I love Wolverine football and watch every game.  I watch Michigan basketball if they make it into the NCAA tournament.  I'll watch an occasional Michigan hockey game during playoffs.

I don't watch any NFL or NBA, though.  I'll watch the Super Bowl if Brady is in it.

I did like the XFL.  It was like a partial remedy to missing college football.

NBA reboot has been fun to watch. Friday night Rockets-Mavs was a classic and not just because two Michigan dudes went off. Raptors are going to make a run I believe.

I think the leagues may mistake the lack of interest as Covid related however it may likely be  that folks are not interested in the continued politicizing.  Its everywhere and sports is no longer a respite from it.  But since no one can say it without backlash, they can voice  it by no longer tuning in as much as we used to.

So the fact that we haven’t had sports for 4 months doesn’t play into the initial ratings at all? Also consider that this is technically a playoff since it’s a postseason tournament, which would also draw more viewers than a regular season group of games.

That was the initial ratings.  The OMG it's back ratings.  Then the "wait, we waited for this?" realization hit when they realized the game wasn't really worth watching ratings hit and those ratings were in the toilet.  Some of that was the politics, for sure, but it's been a trend in the pro leagues as they pass rules that pound the game to an unrecognizable pile of goo

I absolutely love Chuck. He lost one of his best friends (MJ) over speaking the truth about how terrible the organizations have been that he’s owned/run.

He shoots it straight on all topics and does it while having a sense of humor. I wish there were more of him in all facets of media.

Premier League, some. Otherwise, nothing so far. We canceled our streaming service and are too far away from stations to use an indoor antenna, so it'll probably be a long time.

Even if they play college football, given the likelihood of further COVID cancellations and the issues surrounding asking kids to play and practice, I don't think I'll miss it.

Professionals are another story entirely - we'll see once the NFL starts. I haven't been able to sit through an entire baseball inning in more than a decade, so I haven't really been tested.

If people on an Ann Arbor-centric blog feel comfortable talking about not liking the politicizing in sports, then people are likely discussing it without much backlash. I think players for the most part aren't going to say much, but fans will. At least the politicizing itself. As for the underlying issues, I have to admit I lost any desire to get into that type of back-and-forth online ages ago. No one cares what I think. I spoke out when I was younger and far less interested in nuance. And in those days I was far less likely to listen. Life was easier and care-free and I was a happier jerk.

Haven’t watched NBA, watched a lot of hockey Saturday. Been watching the tigers when they’re on. I’ve been more scoreboard watching since I just got into FanDuel.

I haven’t watched sports since I moved to the west coast.  I’ve still enjoyed following them, but the time difference makes watching teams I care about nearly impossible.  Also tbh there are way more interesting things to do here outside of watching sports unlike in the Midwest.

No.  I lost interest in pro sports long ago and mostly follow college sports, with fb being the heaviest interest.  Not looking forward to a cfb-less fall this year, but expecting it.

I'm one of the crop of F1 "fans" that got into it via the Drive to Survive series on Netflix before the last season, so it's been fun to have that going again.

I think all the chaos around the start of the season has led to some extra chaos on the track which is kinda fun. This last race was one of the most ridiculous endings I've ever seen.

F1 really is the perfect lazy weekends sport, especially here in the US where most everything happens early morning. I can set YouTubeTV to record everything, and then Friday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings I can wake up, grab a cup of coffee, and zone out to the engine noises. If anything exciting happens, the announcers will snap me back into it pretty quickly, lol.

Nope.

Never really watch pro sports anyway and never watch the NBA unless the Pistons were deep in the playoffs. I'm a Lions "fan" so only care about the NFL when it concerns my fantasy team or the Pats in the playoffs. Would watch the Tigs occasionally when they were any good. I really thought I would watch the NHL when it came back but haven't even thought about it.

Golf, some soccer  - although int'l leagues are over now, Champions League is about to resume, and motor racing - IMSA and F1 to be specific.

I haven't watched the NBA in decades, and I don't really care.  The NFL has been losing my interest for several years now - they're largely all the same team with manufactured story lines.  Baseball is a social sport, and is quite boring until October.  Family time has cut into my hockey viewing in significant ways.

I will watch CFB when/if they play a game, along with some CBB - especially involving Michigan.  But the pro sports have either lost my interest before C-19, or were on a glide path towards loss.  So I'm not really missing anything, yet.  Missing a Fall filled with CFB would just suck.
