OT: Anyone have experience buying new Corvette

Submitted by Champeen on June 9th, 2020 at 10:21 AM

I am in love with the new model 2020 Corvette.  Really, i have really liked the covette since the 1997 body change, but the new model with mid engine is just amazing.

However, i believe they are only making something like 40k cars (maybe less now due to covid).  I believe you can go and build your own on chevy's website, pay something like 500 dollars, then 'maybe' get your car if they happen to make enough and/or your high enough on the waiting/order list?

I guess im confused and reaching out if anyone has experienced buying a new vette, especially when a new updated model comes out.  Do you pay the dealer extra money to bump you up the list so you get yours?  Does it just maybe take 2 years for you to actually get your vette since the waiting list is so long?

I have hard that those lucky enough to get a new model the first year it comes out can turn around and even flip the car for almost double the price they bought it for since most people get shut out.

It's usually easy to get a base Corvette, but the demand for this model is huge. I don't think you'll be able to order one this year, even ignoring Covid, unless you have a strong purchase history at a dealer. You might be able to get one on the lot if you're willing to pay a markup.

With that said, I'd avoid the first couple years of this model. It's so different from anything Chevy has made and there have already been reports of body structures twisting enough to shatter windows. I'd sit tight for two more years and then order one under MSRP.

As you said, it is going to be difficult to get a car this year with delays from CV19 and the demand.

Waiting for year three of this model run to get the bugs out makes no sense.  Most of the problems will be worked out in year one. When you amortize the savings from year two to year three in terms of making a decent deal, it's not enough over a multi year period of ownership to make much of a difference assuming you can  afford the car in the first place.

I've had seven vettes over the years and have been an early purchaser several times.  The inconvenience of a few trips to the dealer have been more than made up for by having something new and different. Having said that, there have been instances where a problem is significant but that is an exception and often takes a couple of years for something that is not obvious early on to appear.

By year three there's going to be a Z06 or some other super-vette either released or on the horizon. It's a great time to buy a base car. Not just monetarily, but with increased availability.

Have you ever had a new mid engine Corvette with a brand new to GM DCT transmission, where the first year production was interrupted by a pandemic? If not, your experience isn't exactly translatable and that's a perfect storm for year 2 problems.

At the end of the day, there is some "early adopter" mentality to the purchase decision. Some folks, like bluebyyou, are completely fine maybe paying a premium (or at least not a discount) in order to get something different before others while living with some early flaws/bugs/issues. Others are perfectly content waiting for those issues to be addressed and buy 2-3 years down the road. One isn't right or wrong, it's really just personal preference.

I’ll give them a couple years to work the bugs out. Also, if you wait a year or two they will have a hopped up motor option you could opt for...and really make it worth your while.

Ah, yes. I've purchased three new Corvettes in the last year alone. Only two more and I'll fill out my punch card and get my sixth Corvette free.

I bought a 2014 vet the first year in Florida and drove it to California. The only bug in the C7 series is defective radios. I am on the 4th. I also bought one of the last Vets in 2014 and got $3000 off sticker price after other dealers were still trying to squeeze another $5000.

Shop around and be afraid drive a little to buy the car. My last Vet was the 50th anniversary last stick from Athens, GA.

Good road stories from both locations.

Echo the comments regarding waiting a couple of years for GM to work the kinks out of the new mid-engine platform. Would also recommend to test drive locally and figure out the exact options you want and then factory order from a high volume dealer to be delivered locally. Kerbeck (NJ) and MacMulkin (NH) should have the lowest prices.

According to Car and Driver, the Z06 will be in the 2022 model year if that's appealing to you.

Like others, I am traditionally gun shy about buying the first year model of any car.  I've done it twice and ended up on the losing end once....with a 2017 Cadillac XT5.  It had a mystery grounding problem that would engage the anti-theft battery disconnect at random times.  Happened 3 times over 2 years all of which were on cold winter days.  All power would be lost until the car got hooked up for a jump which would reset the relay.  Through connections at GM, I got some help with the problem.  The car was out of warranty, so there was no way I was going to spend big $$ getting parts of the electronics replaced when the GM gurus really weren't sure where the grounding problem could be.  I'm sure the dealer did nothing to fix it when I traded it in, so the ticking time bomb is out there somewhere...waiting for cold winter weather.

From the "Jay's garage video" with the Chief Corvette engineer, the base C* Corvette is almost as fast as the current Z06.  Never driven anything close to that kind of power, but think that the base is a hell of a car for anyone.  Z06 version will be insane.

He also said that computer torque limits the car for 500 miles to let the engine and transmission get broken in before the full power of the engine is available.

Never been a huge Corvette guy, but have appriciated the performance they get for the price point. I have been watching a lot of reviews of the new C8 convertible, and god I am so impressed.

I think the designers could have made it look better if they weren't so tied to keeping it "looking" like a corvette, but I think they did a good job of the design.

If anyone does get it, I don't know why you'd not choose the convertible though.  can go up and down at speeds below 30 mph.  The structure does not change at all, and the weight is only 70 lbs difference. The Frunk and Trunk are very usable.  The cabin appears very comfortable. I am super impressed.  I think it looks best in red, but black looks good too.  A big win on engineering from GM.

(Highly recommend checking out Jays garage episode on it)

I think the convertible is damn cool with the up/down while going 30.  But really, over 7k more for it to automatically do it, when the coupe top can manually be taken off and the looks are pretty much the same?

Plus, i believe in the couple you can see the engine - there is glass i believe on the top and you can get LED's to light up the engine and be visible if looking down at it.  The convertible covers this.

I usually ALWAYS go the convertible route - in the C8 case, i don't think i will/would.

Good points.  I just really like that you don't lose any structure with choosing the convertable, convertible top up is a hard top, and you don't lose the trunk space when you store it, like you do with the storage of the top of the non-convertible.

I also have a soft spot for the two head rest humps that are in the convertible vs the removable top. with the clear glass. Feels more like an race car to me. I think those would be worth the $7,000 (I can't afford either though haha).

Fully understand somone not making the upgrade.  If I had the money, I definitely would get the convertible for a "practical" super car.

Do not get this model!

I worked on the development, it is a stupid design. There is essentially a giant wall dividing the passenger from the driver making it impossible to get road head.
