OT: Anyone been to a Packers Game at Lambeau Field in Green Bay? - Breaking into Cars

Submitted by J_Dub on April 18th, 2019 at 11:30 AM

I am planning to attend a Thursday night game.

I am wondering if it is generally safe to leave suitcases/ golf clubs in a car parked near the stadium (street parking, stadium lot parking, someone's driveway, etc).  I will be coming directly from the airport and then driving out after the game.

If this were San Francisco, I would say, absolutely do not do that, very unsafe.  If this were Ann Arbor, I would probably say no problem.  If this were the Rose Bowl stadium, no problem.

Any thoughts on Lambeau safety/ crime/ car thefts?

If anyone has any ideas for good parking options I'd appreciate that too.

I mean...this could literally happen in any small town in America. It could also not happen in the highest crime areas in any city. Bottom line, don't put anything in your car that you would be afraid to lose.

To be safe, park in a more expensive lot vs on the street.

Or bring everything with you into the stadium.   It shouldn’t be a problem if the seat next to you is open.   Another possibility is, some cars have a trunk and people put stuff in there all the time.

I've been to two games at Lambeau.  I didn't personally have any problems, and I've never heard warnings of such issues (I live in NE Wisconsin, surrounded by bratty Packer fans, so I'd have picked up on something by now if it was indeed an issue).

If you are willingly leaving your car somewhere with valuable items in the trunk, why even ask? The answer is obviously to leave it in the safest lot possible even if you have to pay fifty more bucks.

have been, but its been years.  was what i consider very safe at that time - the polar opposite of, for instance, a raiders game.  one game was the NFC playoffs with carolina, and the packer fans and the panther fans were bbq'ing together, drinking and singing, etc.  kind of like its supposed to be.

I went to see my Steelers play the Raiders in LA a few years ago. I thought I'd stumbled into a motorcycle gang convention by mistake. Thing was that as the Steelers grabbed the game by the throat in the 3rd quarter, the Coliseum emptied out, and the cheering for the Steelers was louder than for the Raiders late in the 4th quarter.

I live about 80 miles away and have been to a ton of games.  It is generally very safe in and around Lambeu Field.  Some fans tend to get really drunk and there's the occasional in stadium scuffle regarding who has the bigger dick, but other than that, the worst that happens is you get beer spilled on you.  As far as parking your car, if you put your gear in the trunk, nobody will even notice it, not to mention the fact that it's a ghost town during the game.  I always park on Gross St. (for free) as close to Lombardi as possible.  Once you cross Lombardi from Gross it's Holmgren Way and there are quite a few bars that you can go to without a cover and some have cover charge tent parties in their parking lots.  If you are looking for food, there are plenty of options around....Hinterland Brewing Co. (which is across the field from Holmgren Way) is a very popular spot now that it's been relocated there, so you'd have to get there pretty early. I usually do some drinking at Badger State Brewing Co. and then grab some food at one of the closer bars, usually Anduzzi's (which has a rooftop bar) if it's not too packed.

I would be very surprised if anyone broke into your car while attending a game at Lambeau Field.

A toothless woman in a snowmobile suit may try to break into your trousers however.

I was there for a game a couple of years ago, managed to find parking just a couple of blocks away, but it was kinda shitty weather so I don't know if thats normal. Probably not. Anyway, we were parked on a neighborhood street, so I'm assuming it was decently safe. You could always toss a blanket or jacket or something over your clubs/suitcases, that's usually my go to move if I don't want nice things to be seen.

Not Lambeau, but my car was broken into in Chicago/Soldier Field. They used a scanner to hack my keyless entry to my car. They only need to be within 50 - 75 feet to scan it from you. The device is super cheap, so it can happen to anyone anywhere.

Since stadiums do not allow purses, I would highly recommend any females with you get the clear, plastic bag they can take in. My wife's purse was hidden in my trunk, so we got to spend all afternoon on the phone calling our bank, credit card companies, etc.

You'll literally just be parking on the street outside someone's house in a random, small-town suburban neighborhood.  99% chance they'll be safe, just cover them with a blanket or something.

OP, I'm amused that you trotted out San Francisco (one of America's most gentrified cities) as shorthand for petty crime. (Yes, I know about the Tenderloin and the city's homeless issue. It just wouldn't be anywhere near the top of my list.)

If they did take your stuff, I'm sure they'd leave a very apologetic note about it, wash and detail your car, and leave contact information so they can work out a way to make it up to you.  If you're lucky, they'll leave pie.  They're friendly like that up in those parts.

I live in an area where the biggest crime risk is the occasional belligerent drunk and people breaking into your car.

Typically if you leave your valuables where people can't see them then they'll be left alone. For the most part, somebody is going to see something on the front seat, break the window, take it and walk off as if nothing had happened.

In order for them to break into your trunk, they'd have to suspect that there is something valuable in there. Since they can't see inside the trunk and you didn't leave anything out where they could see it, they're usually not going to bother and move on to the dumbass next to you who left their laptop bag in the front seat.

Is it still possible somebody is going to break into your trunk? Sure. But it's not likely.

I am by no means biased AT ALL.  When it comes to all things Packers, I give sound and objective advice.

Green Bay is like Mos Eisley in that you'll never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.  The stadium is like the Mos Eisley cantina, and the fans are just like its dirty and criminal patrons.

In all seriousness, you'll be fine.  Wisconsin-ites (with some rare exceptions in Madison) are like Canadians.  Nice people who'll apologies too much for things they didn't do.

In general, I had more problems with theft living in rural areas - stolen bicycles, vandalism and a car break-in - than I experienced living in urban environs. Dumbass redneck kids will rob you blind.

Went to my first Packers game this December.  We parked in a neighborhood with little trouble.  There was ample parking if you are fine walking for a bit. Seemed safe enough.

I was there this past year for the Lions game. I believe you’ll be just fine. Plenty of people let you park in their yard, for a nice price, or the side streets are free if you can get there early enough. Plenty of eyes up and down the street we parked on.

I've been to one game in 2012, and it seemed very safe. I parked at a nearby hotel and walked to the stadium, and everything seemed secure. I had absolutely no issues while in Green Bay, had a great time with my Dad.

Haha, enjoyed a lot of these comments - thanks.  The commentary gave me a good feel for the environment around the stadium.  Since I've never been to GB, it was helpful.

To satiate the inquiring minds:

1)  Rented a minivan so there is no trunk.  Golf trip with 8 dudes (yes, we have multiple vehicles), need space.

2)  Almost everyone I know who has a car in SF has had a window smashed at some point.

3)  I'd definitely pay extra for a secure location, but I'm not sure that there is a correlation between price and security.  Someone's house might be a less-viewed spot than a pricier spot in a stadium lot, for instance.

If this were San Francisco,

SF != Santa Clara.

Nevertheless, never leave anything in one's car.  It's just not worth the risk.  Even "safe" communities have theft.

Are you going by yourself or with people, the best thing to do is get their early enough, drop the crap off at the hotel, and go tailgatre before the game, as their is a great tailgaiting atmosphere and a ton of bars in the area.

where is your hotel in terms of city after the game ?

Season ticket holder here. You'll be fine. Cover with a blanket. I suggest Titletown Brewing in Green Bay Proper, as well as Anduzzis, Stadium View, and "The Bar" in Ashwaubenon (stadium area). Prepare for lots of jelloshots and Dr. McGillicuddys's. I'll be there for Denver, Oakland, and Washington!

Lived in GB for 10 years. Many of our neighbors didn't lock their doors who grew up there (on the other hand my family is from the east coast and locked everything). It's very safe. Not saying stuff doesn't happen, but just drape a blanket over your stuff and enjoy.

The area where the stadium is is very safe and suburban.

The monstrosity that is now the new Lambeau is also the tallest building in Green Bay. The area next to Lambeau from what I've heard is completely re-done. Back in the day there was a plaza literally across the stadium with a Big Lots and Play it Again Sports....
