OT: Another Cougar sighting in the U.P.
Before you click the link, let me stop you if you were hoping to see a beautiful woman of age. Instead, I’m speaking of the feline carnivorous type. Personally saw one about 17 years ago on Stonington Peninsula at my family retreat. I believe these sightings will only become more frequent as their population grows.

My Dad bought one of those (although I think an earlier model) in 1973 that was a total lemon, and he had to return it to the dealership to buy another car. Not one of Mercury's better cars.

Of the four cougars listed above, the only one likely to be spotted would likely have a little less shine than that raisin colored model shown.

My brother-in-law claims to have been stalked by one while jogging in the dunes near Saugatuck a few weeks back. Hmmm....

Any of you boys seen an aircraft carrier around here?
August 13th, 2019 at 12:44 AM ^
All TG references get immediate upvotes.
Point Break and Red Dawn references as well.
August 12th, 2019 at 8:53 PM ^
They've been all over the UP and upper LP for decades, despite the denials from the dnr. I got lost hunting once and happened across cat paw prints as wide across as my size 14 boot.
Nearly peed myself and was sure I was going to be eaten

What is the point of the DNR’s refusal to acknowledge them, in the face of mounting evidence?
August 12th, 2019 at 9:11 PM ^
Before the popularity of trail cams, there really wasn't any evidence. Now it can be confirmed by them. That's my guess.
August 12th, 2019 at 10:08 PM ^
I've never really understood it. Like they couldn't be bothered to track them so it's just easier to deny they exist?
August 13th, 2019 at 7:16 AM ^
If the DNR acknowledges there is a reproducing population in the state (not just transient) then they need to create management planing. DNR here in Minnesota plays that same game with wolverines and lynx.
August 13th, 2019 at 12:47 PM ^
DNR here in Minnesota plays that same game with wolverines and lynx.
That's just silly though. The Wolverines have owned Minnesota since anyone started keeping track.
August 13th, 2019 at 10:35 AM ^
They acknowledge they exist in the UP. They have a website dedicated to reporting sightings.I've reported one on M28 between Munising and Marquette. Mean looking bastard.
What they don't acknowledge is any sort of den or permanent population, which to my knowledge hasn't been successfully challenged. All documented cougars have been categorized as roaming.
There don't seem to be many sightings in the same area for very long, which leads me to believe the DNR is correct.
Could there be some permanent populations in some of the remote areas of the UP? Absolutely. But nothing is proven.
I'd almost bet my pinky fingernail that a cougar resides somewhere between Craig Lake state park and the Huron Mountains.
August 13th, 2019 at 10:55 AM ^
That's where my camp is. We've seen tracks but never caught one on camera.
Our neighbors just north of us bait bear and they have almost as many wolf pics as bear. They haven't said anything about cougar yet.
August 12th, 2019 at 9:16 PM ^
Liar. There’s no cougar out there with paws anywhere near that big. Typical mountain lion/cougar is gonna have like 4-6 in paws.
August 12th, 2019 at 9:24 PM ^
And the width of a regular size 14 boot is about 4.5" give or take a decimal point that isn't important here. Calm down.
August 12th, 2019 at 9:29 PM ^
Found the cougar expert
August 12th, 2019 at 9:29 PM ^
Calm down. A track in soft enough earth will spread and seem pretty big. It ain't like a size 14 boot is 10" wide.
August 12th, 2019 at 10:12 PM ^
Work for DNR?
August 12th, 2019 at 10:32 PM ^
Lol. And approx how WIDE do you think his size 14 boot is!?
August 13th, 2019 at 8:05 AM ^
quite a few sightings as far south at Berrien county.
38 confirmed sightings.
August 12th, 2019 at 8:56 PM ^
One of my worst fears is coming across one of these bow hunting. Might not even see it coming.
August 13th, 2019 at 12:46 AM ^
Worse than coming across one without a bow?
