OT: Ale to the Victors - First Pour

Submitted by Eric on

Well here is the first pour of "Ale to the Victors".  It came out suprisingly well for the first batch.  I can best describe it as a cross between Blue Moon and Leinenkugel Sunset Wheat. The first cup was a little bitter, which is common because there is always a small amount of sediment on the bottom of the keg. The 2nd glass was much better. I'll probably use a different type of hops on the second batch.  Overall I would have to say that I was very pleased!  Go Blue!!

As a fellow home brewer, congratulations on your brew.  She's a beauty, albeit a bit top heavy, but we all like a little extra up there, right (nudge nudge, wink wink)?  For those thinking of home brewing: Brewing as a hobby or sport will never fail you.  You'll occasionally make a "bad" batch, but at the cost of Schlitz, it really isn't that bad is it?

Good work Chewer D and I look forward to more brew reports.

Exactly! I brewed a vanilla stout last fall. I was disappointed with the amount of head. I think I used too much lactose in my wort. I also used too much vanilla in the primary fermenter (i literally threw in two vanilla beans).

that a "bad" homebrew batch is still not really that bad.  I've made about 30 brews, and had 2 I wouldn't serve to guests, but I still drank them eventually (citrus wheat that was too bitter and a red ale that was bottled too early making "bottle bombs" when they were opened).

Strong work on the ale, Chewer D.  It looks great.

Dude- I have no idea who you are, but I still wish I was hanging out on your porch sampling your most killer homebrew. We could smoke cigars and be best friends forever.

Or you could pour my sorry ass in to a cab, say "Go Blue" and wish we'd never met.

Your call.

But, I also brew (therefore I am) and I am planning on being at the Jolly Pumpkin on August 14 with my son.  If there is any interest, I will bring a few cigars and we could hang out for a while.

My humidor includes:

CAO Gold Torpedos - 6 yrs old

CAO Black Torpedos - 2 yrs old

Rocky Patel  Vintage 1990 Torpedos = 5 yrs old

Rocky Patel Vintage 1992 Torpedos - 4 yrs old

Rocky Patel Vintage 1999 Churchill - 2 yrs old

Rock Patel Java Robusto - 3 yrs old

(Yeah, I'm a Patel fan)

And a nice variety of Arturo Fuente, Padron and Partagas.

Any takers - just post on and we'll figure it out from there.

The first time I ever had one, ONE, and it was a pretty cheap one (IE, not bad, but definitely not good), I realized that night, lying in bed that I wanted another. It took three months for the urge to go away. I have WAYYYY too addictive of a personality.

I'm really hoping that many of you can join me for a beer on the golf course @ the opener. I'm only bringing 10 Gal. worth, so get there early!

As a big fan of wheat beers, particularly Blue Moon, (haven't tried the Sunset Wheat but you've convinced me to pick up a 6-pack to try) my hat is off to you.

I've never tried home brewing. My neighbor brewed his first batches over the past year to pretty good success. Have you ever used the kits, or are you largely going to supply stores and buying the ingredients separately?

That's why I don't like sunset wheat.  I think it takes like shit.  If I wanted fruity pebbles in my beer I'd pour some shitty beer into a bowl of fruity pebbles and have at it.

If you like wheat beer try these:

Hacker Pshorr Weiss

Weinstephaner

You can thank me later!

Hacker Pshorr Weiss Weinstephaner

Yes. Weihenstephaner is my favorite. Hacker Pschorr and Franziskaner are good too. I "studied" abroad in Germany 4 years ago (can you figure out why?), which is where my love of Hefeweizen started.

Kudos on a great looking and I'm sure great tasting creation!  A good friend of mine who is also a home brewer makes some great stuff that I enjoy sampling whenever I'm at his place.  He's also a UM fan and football season ticket holder, so you have at least one (I'm sure others, too) kindred spirit out there.  Would love to sample Ale to the Victors, but I will at least pay homage to it next time I'm over at my friend's house.  Cheers, and Go Blue!

Good looking pour sir!  Good, cloudy body with good color and a thick, solid looking head.  Shit, I'll drink this with you anytime.  Looks like a great beer for the summer.

Go with a saison next

Looks delicious and If it tastes like a mix between the two beers you mention, it must be. Damn I wish I was going to be in Ann Arbor for the opener to try it.   For all those who will, enjoy. Go Blue!
