OT: Ale to the Victors - First Pour

Well here is the first pour of "Ale to the Victors".  It came out suprisingly well for the first batch.  I can best describe it as a cross between Blue Moon and Leinenkugel Sunset Wheat. The first cup was a little bitter, which is common because there is always a small amount of sediment on the bottom of the keg. The 2nd glass was much better. I'll probably use a different type of hops on the second batch.  Overall I would have to say that I was very pleased!  Go Blue!!

As a fellow home brewer, congratulations on your brew.  She's a beauty, albeit a bit top heavy, but we all like a little extra up there, right (nudge nudge, wink wink)?  For those thinking of home brewing: Brewing as a hobby or sport will never fail you.  You'll occasionally make a "bad" batch, but at the cost of Schlitz, it really isn't that bad is it?

Good work Chewer D and I look forward to more brew reports.

that a "bad" homebrew batch is still not really that bad.  I've made about 30 brews, and had 2 I wouldn't serve to guests, but I still drank them eventually (citrus wheat that was too bitter and a red ale that was bottled too early making "bottle bombs" when they were opened).

Strong work on the ale, Chewer D.  It looks great.

My humidor includes:

CAO Gold Torpedos - 6 yrs old

CAO Black Torpedos - 2 yrs old

Rocky Patel  Vintage 1990 Torpedos = 5 yrs old

Rocky Patel Vintage 1992 Torpedos - 4 yrs old

Rocky Patel Vintage 1999 Churchill - 2 yrs old

Rock Patel Java Robusto - 3 yrs old

(Yeah, I'm a Patel fan)

And a nice variety of Arturo Fuente, Padron and Partagas.

Any takers - just post on and we'll figure it out from there.

As a big fan of wheat beers, particularly Blue Moon, (haven't tried the Sunset Wheat but you've convinced me to pick up a 6-pack to try) my hat is off to you.

I've never tried home brewing. My neighbor brewed his first batches over the past year to pretty good success. Have you ever used the kits, or are you largely going to supply stores and buying the ingredients separately?

Sunset Wheat is very good, as long as you don't mind your beer tasting exactly like Fruity Pebbles. Seriously.

That's why I don't like sunset wheat.  I think it takes like shit.  If I wanted fruity pebbles in my beer I'd pour some shitty beer into a bowl of fruity pebbles and have at it.

If you like wheat beer try these:

Hacker Pshorr Weiss

Weinstephaner

Yes. Weihenstephaner is my favorite. Hacker Pschorr and Franziskaner are good too. I "studied" abroad in Germany 4 years ago (can you figure out why?), which is where my love of Hefeweizen started.

Ideally you want to buy a kit from a place that has high turnover. Old malt extract will give you off flavors.

Kudos on a great looking and I'm sure great tasting creation!  A good friend of mine who is also a home brewer makes some great stuff that I enjoy sampling whenever I'm at his place.  He's also a UM fan and football season ticket holder, so you have at least one (I'm sure others, too) kindred spirit out there.  Would love to sample Ale to the Victors, but I will at least pay homage to it next time I'm over at my friend's house.  Cheers, and Go Blue!
