It's three hours from first pitch. The hell I can concentrate at work. The Tigers are up against a much eviller empire than the one in New York. Time for JV to do his thing. Go Tigers.
(Edit: I removed most of the inflammatory language.)
The Tigers NEED a win today with Verlander on the hill. Especially the way Game 2 went.
I'm still pissed at how that happened. We let the series completely change momentum from 1 swing of the bat
I look at it like this: Now that we've avoided the curse of the sweep, let's take three and not have to go back to Boston. The Sox have yet to figure out our starting pitching.
Papi looked really confused by that Benoit change over the heart of the plate that tied the game.
Benoit didn't exactly start the game.
He certainly didn't end it, either.
What point are you making? He said Boston couldn't figure out our starting pitching and you came back by saying they figured out Benoit, who is not a part of that group.
As dominant as the Tigers starting pitching was in gms 1 and 2, it didn't matter. The series is tied. But congrats on those strikeouts!
I hope we throw three straight CG wins on their asses
It didn't matter? We took back home field advantage without pitching Verlander. Our #3 starter out pitched your ace. And if the Scherzer-Bucholtz match-up goes the same way the next time around (if it gets there), I feel good about our chances.
That's correct. Scherzer's superlative start in gm 2 was wasted. You're aware of how it ended. But I'm not exactly disappointed with how Lester pitched in game 1 and as shitty as the offense played, the tying run was on second for the final out. As for the balance of the series...your confidence is sexy.
It was boston grasping at straws even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in awhile
Good thing they grasped at enough straws to lead the league in runs this year. Which, granted, makes the Tigers starters that much more impressive so far.
You seem very angry, but I am in agreement with your "Go Tigers!" Let's hope they don't need Benoit.
During a meeting this morning, I was sort of drifting between matchup stats and probability predictions - both Massey and TeamRankings are giving the Tigers about 55% for this game, with a median score of 4-3. Regardless, a win today would be nice indeed - a classic JV performance? Sounds good to me.
Pretty hilarious that Red Sox players are whining about Peralta playing when Manny failed multiple drug tests and anyone with half a brain knows that Ortiz took PEDs.
About the fan from Barstool Sports Boston:
It was pure instinct. He did what he thought was right in the heat of the moment. He was making a point. At worst it was a dickhead move. At best he won the game.
I wouldn't advise traveling the interwebs to Barstool sports, I checked the link to the Home Run Angel's post and there's quite the KKK contingent in the comments. Pretty sad to see those sort of remarks in this day and age, especially anywhere outside of YouTube comments.
Or any of those "Sports sites for Men" to be honest.
They're all horrible
Exactly. I hate reading comments on espn, mlive, or any fan site. It makes sports fans look like trash.
The vitriol is a little strong. I read the links but its not so far away from the Malice at the Palace and the question on everyone's mind if we are fortunate enough to win the series is how many days will Detroit burn.
Between JV and Max we cover three games of a potential 5 left. Add 1 for Fister and 1 for Sanchez and I think we'll get to 3 wins.
Boston strong was nice after the bombings..but why does is it so involved with baseball. Its getting old.
Give them their solidarity thing man, as immaterial as it may be. The are victims and they'll give up on it when it doesn't conjure wins.
I don't mind that so much, I only minded when some holier-than-thou columnist (usually a Yahoo one hunting for pageviews) would take fans in (for example) Chicago to task for holding up signs that said things like "Chicago Stronger." Oh, so despicable, they would say. How dare they. IME (and many others as well) if you use it to brag about your sports teams, it's fair game for others. I don't even think it was a lot of Boston folks being offended so much as columnists presuming to be offended on their behalf.
I feel the same as well about the whole phrase... The only way it seems to be used these days is to support Boston sports when it should really be used as a way to remember those who lost their lives or were injured. Also, the fact that companies are making money off of the whole thing as well is really stupid.
I have faith in JV, but why in the hell does Leyland always pull Veras early? Let him get a couple of outs/end the inning, he literally cannot be worse than Porcello od Smyly on any given outting
I was a Benoit supporter but this last month or so has shaken my confidence in him. I have the most confidence in Smyley out of guys in the pen.
As a Yankee fan, I'm relieved that people can finally see through all the the b.s. feel-good "red sox nation" propaganda. That bleacher dickbrain is the true face of the sox fan. And it is why Yankee fans loathe them. For this series...Go Tigers.
The Yanks and the Red Sox have won a shit ton of games over the last 15 or so years. That would be a big reason why people hate them.
And, please, let's play the "pick a random dickhead out of the crowd and make him the face of a group of fans" game. Always a favorite.
I wouldn't have until there started to be other people who stood up for the guy. I don't know how many it takes to start representing a fanbase, but the more "Angels of Fenway" there are, the less anyone can get away with calling it isolated.
Ok. But the next incident at CoPa exposes your logic.
OK. Let me know when racial epithets are hurled at opposing fans at Comerica and internet wackjobs stand up to call the racism justified and then my logic will be nice and exposed. Can't say I've heard of such a thing yet, though.
I will. I'll listen closely. Because Detroit iand racism have never been mentioned in the same sentence. Right?
You shouldn't have gone in this direction with your OP.
Because at some point in the history of the city, racist stuff happened, so nobody's allowed to accuse anyone else of it no matter how racial the comments? OK then.
You're painting the discussion with a far broader brush than you accuse me of doing.
Seriously? You're making broad generalizations about a fanbase based on morons at the park and a shitty blog. Your OP would have fit in nicely at Barstool.
Did the actions of a few fans make the entire Detroit fanbase a "trashy, racist," "moronic prick fanbase"?
Also, the fantastic Oral History from Grantland in case anyone forgot:
What annoys me about Red Sox fans is not so much that their team has won a lot, but that they try to play the underdog card because their team isn't quite as rich as the Yankees.
Yankee fans can be smug, but they don't make any attempt to cry poverty. In the end I find them the more tolerable of the two.
This is pretty common and I tend to agree with you. As a diehard Red Sox fan I hate it when our fans cry poor. I think the Red Sox should always use its financial advantage - market, stadium, tv and history - to its competitive advantage.
However, the Red Sox aren't close to Yankees in salary this year (or any year, for that matter). In fact, the difference between the Yankees and Red Sox in salary is usually the entire salary of many small market teams. This year, the $70 million difference is more than the salary of the bottom six (6) MLB teams. For your reading pleasure:
2013 Rank/Team/Salary $$
1. NYY / $228.99
2. LAD/ $216.3
3. PHILLY / 159.58
4. BOS / 158.97
5. DET / $149.05
Please get a win today. I'm still not over that punch to the gut Sunday night.
Does anyone happen to know a decent site to stream it on that isnt in like, you know, Russia? I know you can pay the 4.99 at mlb.com for "alternate views", but I'd like to be able to watch the actual fox feed my last couple hours at work. TBS had an app for a live feed, but I haven't been able to find a similar one for fox.
vipboxonline.eu will have it for sure
Thanks! Working great. Looks like the work day is ending early today.
It's working terribly for me on multiple machines and is also reported as working terribly by a couple of friends in completely different locations. Is anyone aware of anywhere else to watch?
[Not saying you're wrong, and thanks to the previous poster for posting the link.]
There's no MLB.com "Postseason.tv" for the ALCS. Just a radio feed and the "AtBat" app.
The goal was to leave Boston 1-1, they did that. It was so disappointing to see Boston win though when Detroit was a mere 5 outs away from winning and imploded. A 2-0 lead would have been so huge. Regardless, it's a 7 game series and 3 of the 5 remaining games are in Detroit and Boston has yet to show they can touch Detroit's starters.
Let's go Detroit!
Wow...strong Red Sox hate here. Does anyone realize that we have Boston fans here as well? I understand the majority of the board is going to be pro-Tigers, but there's no need to call us a "moronic prick fanbase". It makes you look like a moron, OP.
That said, go Sox!
Well said. Go Sox!
F Boston and your funny accents too
Is electric today at Comerica. The Tigers will need a pick me up after being shellshocked on Sunday and I think an active crowd can do that for them.
Go Tigers! It would be so nice to see JV completely own the Red Sox after the crap we had to put up with Sunday.
Will definitely be electric. They always are. And the cheer JV and the boys get will be awesome.first time the home crowd gets to cheer JV for his game 5 masterpiece vs Oakland.
That being said, I have this terrible feeling this is a must win game (I know, 4 more games.) But to go down this series after surrendering 1 hit in 15 innings is a backbreaker.
Go tigers fergodsakes!!
The crowd must have stolen the electricity from the lights
I would pay Fox or MLB a considerable amount of money to be able to stream this game at work. I am getting so insanely frustrated with these awful internet streams. I can't believe they would schedule a game at this time and not offer any way to watch the game. If TBS can figure it out, you'd think Fox would be able to.
Early strike zone isn't consistent at all. Verlander not getting the outside corner to lefties and Lackey is.
Oh come on play the game until the lights come back, there's plenty of natural light for another hour.
it's a day game right? the first nite playoff game was in 1971, iirc. play the damn game. you don't need any lights.
Regarding Detroit's bankruptcy and the lights going out?
I'll say every late night show and every sportscenter. So who wants the under on 100%?
Rain will most certainly play a role late in this game, they're playing in the window right now to get the game in before the clouds open up around 7:00-7:30.
It just wouldn't be a Tiger postseason without a delayed JV postseason start.
Per Erin Andrew: Jim Leyland used the power outage as an opportunity to smoke a cigarette. Old school.
If I didn't watch a lot of baseball, I would be convinced that John Lackey is the greatest pitcher to ever grace God's green earth based on this game. You'd have trouble convincing me otherwise.
Fortunately, you probably mean second best of all time. Thank god JV put on his big boy pants today.
Why am I feeling a 2-1 or 3-2 loss coming on (that's a reverse jinx in our favor btw).
I hate those damn beards. I really hope the Tigers win.
Seeing Jhonny get big hits is even more sweet after the reports of Red Sox players whining about him are out.
Now someone just needs to drive him in.
It's becoming pretty clear that not resigning him would be a mistake. The window is open now.
Is the outside corner a strike or a ball? Does it depend who is pitching? I feel like this ump has been consistently inconsistent.
Come on Dirks, see done damn pitches...
Really need a competent left fielder going into next season.
Nick Castellanos?? Not much on the free agent market aside from Choo.
But just saying....the same castellanos who only a yr and a half ago was a third baseman?
Not much in the farm system either.
No snark taken, I guess I'm just assuming his defense can't be as bad as Delmon Young who we trotted out there for a few months in 2011.
DY also crushed the ball in the post season. We could use some of that.
90 pitches through 6 for JV. Time to get some runs on the board.
Middle of the sixth and it's only 6:15. hehe
Where it would be beneficial if Jackson sprained his ankle.
Don't let Hunter off the hook, he's been just as bad without the gold glove caliber defense.
When will the Tigers learn to lay off that curve ball away? Jeeeeez..
Now everyone going to bitch that leyland left him in too long?
Can't blame JV or Leyland. You can't win a ballgame without scoring a run. Jackson and Hunter continue to be absolutely useless. Prince is also in that category.
i kid - everyone blames leyland for the last game for pulling Scherzer too early.
the manager really is not to blame in either
Craptacular. On the 100th pitch.
well their starter will be tired too or a closer is coming in, we need some hits now
Damn, at least Cabrera is guaranteed to come up with two outs on the ninth if we continue to suck at the plate.
Well this blows.
Down 1-0 with the bullpen coming in...not looking good
We can't trade him and Castellanos to KC for Alex Gordon and Billy Butler.
that's just wonderful.
Do we have any alternatives at AAA for Jackson and Hunter???? I mean seriously, these guys have been abysmal!!!
Not funny. Possibly true, but not funny
Well, we have Coke warming up in the bullpen. That should be entertaining.
NOW WE NEED BATS
meat of the Tigers order coming up in the 8th and 9th. It's now or never.
they could get hit by a pitch. Or, we could have a wild pitch third strike like Sanchez had the other night. Or, we could see a fielding error.
It wasn't over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor and it isn't over now!
or a walk!
Iglesias pinch hit
Horrible decision by Boston for not bunting man over to third. Hopefully it comes back to haunt them.
How do you let that one go by with 2 strikes?
Let's in bring the guy with little power and the guy you've benched this series because of his limited offense.
Leyland takes a lot of undeserved criticism, but Iggy as a pinch hitter? C'mon man!
Lol who else you gonna bring in, Dirks can't hit anyone let alone a lefty, and the bench is pretty awful. He went with the only righty off the bench and he gets an easy switch defensively with Peralta going to left and Iggy staying at short.
YES, worst case for boston now
You do realize they're both Japanese, right?
We got a lefty bat on the bench for Hunter?
It's Julio, everyone knows that
Walking AJ, that is a really bad Boston. Cabrera could come up with a man on this inning.
Yeah! Go Tigers!
I'm confused, it seems that both Jackson and Hunter got on base in the same inning. What's going on?
Who's pitching the ninth?
Would you walk Cabrera to get to Prince? Seems smart to me.
Yes. Hopefully they don't though
Nah, don't think you put the go-ahead run in scoring position. If first was open, sure.
Damn that seemed like it was a foot outside.
Worst AB of the year for Miguel, didn't swing at one strike.
That first one was a strike, but the rest weren't even close
Eff you McCarver, "an anxious Cabrera strikes out."
Double steal anyone?
It's the only chance we got. Prince ain't coming through.
It's on you, Prince. I hope you can get it done.
Well, that was brutal.
Worst contract in baseball. You suck prince
No doubt. Package Prince and Castellaneos to KC for Hosmer. We'll have to pay like 75% of his contract though!
Miggy and Prince - best 3 and 4 hitters in the game! Ummm......
Three straight strikes. I could have done that, Fielder.
well, we lose this series
out hitters and relief pitchers are not good enough
Squander, squander, squander.
$214 million dollars. Thanks for the contribution.
This team is incapable of generating clutch hits.
the red sox swing at strikes. the tigers don't. even there miggy and fielder were only thrown one strike each. yet the both strike out swinging. same thing with infante when he had peralta on third with just one out.
Just wants to hit that post game buffet
Seriously. This blog and fat jokes.
Wow, 7 pitches to take down two with runners on. Game over.
This feels like Saturday and the PSU game.
I quit sports
All they had to do was finish the game. Here the Tigers need someone to get a hit and they can't get it.
That was pretty.
Ugh. This franchise can't help, but choke. That's all they have done under Dombroski and Leyland. Pucker, pucker, pucker.
If there were upvotes still, you have mine lol
Why Coke? Anybody but coke
Game four - move VMart and Peralta up, hit Fielder sixth. Send his fat ass a message.
I'm over forty and could catch a ball at first and whiff at balls. Give me 1/10th of his salary.
I'm 55 and I'll take 5%!
He played for Milwaukee...?
is pitching in a an ALDS is indicative of something
Napoli looks like the guy on the Big League Chew packets.
Ok, boys, time for some offense.
Actually I have more faith in VMart and Peralta than Cabrera and Fielder right now.
Agreed, eat me up tigers
Maybe it's our chance to send them a depressing walk off?
Do they need to air it every 5 minutes. The little brat should be google searching "how to get a real haircut". Freaking new age hippy douche.
Iglesias pinch hit but didn't go into the field? genius Leyland. Why wouldn't you have Santiago bat in that case?
Shut up McCarver.
BAD CALL UMP
Just like that, misery almost over.
DP. Of course.
Game over. Dare I say series? Ugh.
4 straight pitches out of the strike zone to jhonny.
their starters are as good as ours
but their hitters and relievers are better
dominating the bosox batters is more impressive than dominating the tigers' batters, especially since we've been so cold.
I don't think their starters are as good, but it doesn't matter when we swing at terrible pitches all game. There's no plate discipline on this fucking team
At some point Illitch has to wonder if Dombroski can actually bring a championship to Detroit. So many poor postseason performances.
They've been to 2 world series and a number of playoff appearances after almost a decade of the bottom of the league. DD is doing fine.
Certainly Dombroski has made the Tigers relevant again. They actually were bad for two decades. He deserves credit for changing the environment. But he has assembled the Cowardly Tigers. A team that lacks the character to get clutch hits when needed. This team just have that.
This team does not have a Vinnie Johnson or Billups. It does not have a Gibson or Yzerman or Lidstorm. All championship Detroit teams had at least one clutch player. These Tigers don't have that.
This series is effectively over. Oh, sure they might win a game in Detroit. But this series ended when the ball sailed over the fence in right. This team does not have the character to respond. They have proven that over and over again.
Unbelievable starting pitching efforts completely wasted.
Tigers are 1-4 in JVs last 5 starts. He's allowed 1 run in those 5.
Well guys it's a long series and our starting pitching gives us a chance. That's all I got right now.
Cabrera's AB in the 8th was basically the nail in the coffin, he's got to lift a flyball in that situation and he chased 4 pitches out if the zone.
Good point. Looked like he was pressing.
Fuck this team.
EDIT: Fuck all sports teams.
I'm done with this shit
I'll be honest: Red Sox are completely unimpressive. Yes, they're up 2-1 in this close series but Tiger hitters have sucked for a month (Marlins pitching destroyed them) and have continued sucking while our pitchers have dominated them. If not for the implosion in game 2 Tigers - despite inept hitting - would be up in this series. But the Tigers even made John Lackey look good, which is almost impossible.
Lots of talent, little heart. Boy, do we need the Wings to be good again. The Pistons are adift in a sea of mediocrity and the Lions are the Lions.
I like the Lions chances of winning a Super Bowl before Tigers win a World Series. Tiger have a year or two of a window left before Fielder's contract becomes the huge albatross it's always been destined for and handicaps this team.
I'm convinced at this point you are not a Tigers fan. You only comment on them when they lose and then you bitch about how terrible of a franchise they are and then go on to say how horrible Dombrowski and Leyland. It's annoying. And I'm not just trying to be Mr. Optimistic, this game sucked, but the Tigers can easily come back.
loses or even almost loses a football game.
I think we've caught your point enough by now. You hate Dombrowski and take any chance to castrate them whenever possible, I'll grant you that tonight it's completely valid. But when basically everything you post is negative doom and gloom it's hard to take your opinion seriously.
You're also the same person that claimed we would lose to OSU after they scored on their first possession last year, and that claimed Michigan basketball was overrated after struggling with Slippery Rock in the 1st half.
/life's easier as an optimist.
The GM is the person most responsible for the construction of this team. Who did not address the closer spot? Dombroski.
I don't "hate" Dombroski. I just think he is a terribly overrated GM. He has constructed a team that chokes. At some point you'd think he recognize this and attempt to change the chemistry like Devellano did when he brought in Shanahan.
This team's lack of hitting is embarrassing. There is no way this team should be struggling so mightily to get one lousy run.
I'm saying you jump to conclusions negatively whenever possible, you claimed after the 1st TD OSU scored that the game was over already, nevermind that we actually had a lead at halftime. Obviously we lost, so go ahead and revel in your moral victory I suppose, but you've always been over the top negative, and it's pretty tiresome.
because they make me look like Stuart Smalley.
but you've been around much longer and have had the same schtick for quite some time.
November 9th, 2012 at 10:02 PM #44 SalvatoreQuattro SalvatoreQuattro's picture Joined: 11/30/2010 MGoPoints: 3533 This is not the 5th best team in the country. How can a supposedly elite team struggle with a D2 school? The answer is that team is not elite.
That's after one half of the 2nd game of the year.
And frankly, that statement was true at the time. They weren't that impressive. If you recall that team had issues throughout the Big Ten season. Many fans on here did not foresee them going to the national title game and you know that.
Sure I went back that far to prove a point that you find any reason to criticize a team you're supposedly a fan of whenever possible. Never-mind that they won the game by 38 and were consistently a top 15 team all year in the best conference in the country.
You can keep avoiding my point but you might consider trying to enjoy the teams you follow rather than wallow in doubt.
You had better be kidding.
Fuck you Gomes.
Well, I am going to get a bit tipsy and watch the Hobbit on HBO before going to bed and hopefully waking up tomorrow less angry.
Tuiasasopo didn't make the roster? He provides more offense than Dirks and Kelly
Tuiasasopo post All-Star game # :
So no he wasn't a better option over Dirks or Kelly, both of whom are better defensively.
You're saying he's on par with Austin Jackson?
Austin Jackson post All-Star break:
Tui was god awful in the 2nd half and basically played his way off the team, if you want to complain that we don't have a real LF then sure go ahead, ill buy it ,but Tuiasosopo is certainly not the answer.
You are so right. We don't have a LF. Unfortunately, we don't have a CF for the playoffs either, and barely have a RF.
Way to go Sox....some of us Mgobloggers are from New England.
Cool. Want a cookie?
Is it chocolate chip? If so I'll take one. Go Sox!!!
Damn straight! Gutsy effort from Lackey.
I'm here for the sox bang and chowder recipes.
Some of us aren't but want the sox to win anyway.
Your out machine is Austin Jackson. He's 3 for 30+ at the top of the lineup in this postseason.
Move Castellanos to 3rd, Miggy to first, go get Granderson, or with the money, take a run at Beltran.
Two years in a row is enough.
Jake miller is his nephew so he would start.
Pass me some of what you're drinking re: that trade scenario.
As much as we have gave these last two games away, we have rallied from down 2-1 already once this postseason. Just need another good start from Fister. Plus it would be great to beat Peavy.
Let's not forget we wrestled Peavy away from the White Sox - on behalf of Boston. And we came away with Hitlessias.
In the scene from Friday Nights Lights, when he is talking about feeling cursed whether they are winning or losing, that no matter what he does, they are going to lose. I've got to say, it's a weird feeling.
You ever feel cursed, coach? Like no matter what, inside your heart, you gon' lose?
They would have won this series. Boston has the momentum and may win it here in Detroit.
