OT: Air Force to wear Sweet New F-35A Helmets?

Submitted by Ecky Pting on

So the Air Force Falcons may be rolling with their stylin' new headgear on Saturday. Here are a couple of quick primers so you'll know the back stories:

Air Force's Sweet New Football Helmets

So what's the big deal about an F-35A helmet, you ask? Well, at $400k a pop, quite a lot it appears:

I used to wear carbon fiber helmets. We noticed our video cameras would short out from time to time. It was determined our helmets were dumping carbon fiber spicules into the local air and these particles were lofting airborne into the camera circuitry then shorting out the works. Later we learned that carbon fibers can lodge in the lungs and, presumably, trigger adverse health effects. I have sincere reservations about carbon fiber helmets used in athletics let alone in high-impact sports such as football. 0.02

The F-35 is a giant waste of money.  As a rule, the jack of all trades is a master at none of them.  And this fits the F-35 perfectly...  I'd rather the gov't money on aircraft tailored to what each service needs, not a generic trade-off.

But the helmets look sweet!

You cannot land weapons on an F/A-22. They won't guide on the platform. F/A-22 supercruises. Almost nothing can defeat that machine and it has the legs to get where we need it. If we're smart, we'll re-open the F/A-22 production line and implement some performance upgrades at manufacture.

F-35 is an overpriced joke and the wet dream of the military industrial complex. Get paid well above and beyond what your product is worth and get endless contracts to "repair" it until it is eventually replaced by another waste of money. The days of quality military assets like the F-15, F-16, and A-10 are gone. I see this garbage every day for real.
