OSU Consequences re: Self Imposed Sanctions

The money shot:

After the smoke clears, the only game that is still on the books is the only defeat, a 31-18 loss at Wisconsin in October, dropping the official record from 12-1 to 0-1. With that, the Buckeyes' cumulative record over Jim Tressel's decade-long tenure as head coach falls from 106-22, the best winning percentage of any Division I-A/FBS program in that span except Boise State, to 94-22, which ranks a mere fourth. (In the bigger picture, the sudden absence of a dozen wins also drops OSU from third to fifth in all-time winning percentage, to the benefit of Texas and Oklahoma.) Tressel falls from the ranks of the exclusive 200-win club among D-I head coaches, too, including his days at Youngstown State.

Yea, but everyone knows, if that game was played nine out of ten times, OSU would beat Wisconsin.

Edit: Also, your link isn't working for me. Not sure if that's my browser or the link that's f'ing up.

After the Wisconsin/OSU game, Pryor showed off his intelligence by saying "Everybody knows that if we play nine out of 10 times, we'd beat Wisconsin."

I want to know which teams are playing in the tenth game.

Just doing a quick google leads me to believe they did not impose any in football, and basketball only got one scholarship and one year of probation (ish, not 100%) tacked on after the NCAA heard the case.

Their sanctions, according to espn:

"USC has imposed sanctions on its men's basketball program for NCAA rules violations, including a ban on postseason competition at the end of this season, a reduction of scholarships and vacating all of its wins from 2007-08."

Link

And I believe they didn't do anything on their own to the football program, perhaps in the hopes the basketball sanctions would be good enough? Not sure on that, but I can't find anything about football self imposed sanctions, only basketball.

Do you have a source for that?  I've heard it before, but I don't think it makes sense.  It would mean that tsio's record against us would not be the inverse of our record against them.  In other words, it makes us 57-44-6 against them, and it makes them 43-57-6 against us.  I don't buy it.

We're not vacating the game.  To do so would wipe all of our players' contributions that day off the books, which would not be fair to them.  Even if it's a loss, they deserve recognition for having participated.

This situation exists for the MSU basketball series.  We're officially 86-71 against them; they're 74-93 against us.  In practice, we usually list the overall record, with the "official" record in parentheses.

Thinking back about our response to the NCAA...Dave Brandon made it clear that the Freep gravely overestimated the charges.  Almost every buckeye fan says that the ESPN (Talbott) and SI (Tattoos) reports are unsubstantiated because there hasn't been a new NOA.  If those reports were indeed gravely overestimated, wouldn't we be hearing reports from the OSU AD that the reports were exaggerated if not false?

I didn't know that if OSU's season stood, they would be third all time in winning percentage.  Unfortunately for us, losing 22 games the last 3 years under RichRod has allowed Notre Dame to catch up and they're right on our heels.

1. Michigan 0.73453

2. Notre Dame 0.73266

3. Texas 0.71730

4. Oklahoma 0.71704

5. Ohio State 0.71592

6. Alabama 0.70747

7. USC 0.70496

8. Nebraska 0.70131

9. Tennessee 0.68993

10. Penn State 0.68940

It did allow them to catch up quite a bit because we only had overtaken the lead a couple of years before, so we've never had much of a lead: 5 games is pretty sizeable for the small lead.

In a head-to-head matchup, it's about who has the most wins, right? So vacating the win(s) is meaningful for us, and Wiscy shouldn't care about OSU vacating the loss (if that is the case), since they still retain the win.
